- 47th Ward - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 12:41 pm:
I was expecting this to be a Friday at 5 kind of announcement, regardless of what he was going to do with the bill.
- Fax Machine - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 12:46 pm:
Right, day 60 was the Friday after Thanksgiving, so I expected him to make the announcement on Thanksgiving Day.
Then again the Laquan McDonald video was releases right before Thanksgiving and it didnt really lessen the political impact (although we did not see the violent demonstrations in Chicago that happened in Baltimore & St Louis so maybe it was effective timing)
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 12:47 pm:
Diana Rauner’s personal reputation hangs in the balance.
As the head of a Social Service, it will be interesting, if Bruce AVs, how Diana Rauner can think her word and honesty can’t be in question… after 3 today… if it’s an AV….
- Anon221 - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 12:52 pm:
Credentialed media only- Guess that leaves the Proft Papers out. /s
- Macbeth - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:00 pm:
Lots of fuss for a cowardly AV.
- Roman - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:00 pm:
Can we read anything into the setting for the announcement? If he was signing it, wouldn’t he have picked a women’s health center?
The Thompson Center strikes me as good location to announce an AV.
- Amalia - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:01 pm:
So what is the pool? number of times he drops the g? number of times he mentions his wife? number of times he says he cares about children?
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:03 pm:
===Note: Credentialed media only===
Is Fran Eaton credentialed?
- anon2 - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:03 pm:
Rauner faces two bad choices. He will elicit sharp criticism no matter what the decision.
- cdog - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:04 pm:
Good for BTIA.
That whole wisdom-less practice of dropping the bill dispositions at 5pm on Friday isn’t very civic-minded.
I prefer to read the analysis over the weekend. A Thursday announcement should improve the analysis, and even the basic coverage.
$.10 it’s an AV.
- A guy - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:05 pm:
And then we’ll see the culmination of this lousy, insincere, politically poisoned and motivated bill.
Cynical government at it’s worst for dawn to dusk. Ugh.
- Deft Wing - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:07 pm:
Terrible predicament of his own making. AV is his only way … which means he’ll likely sign or veto outright.
- Roman - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:14 pm:
==Rauner faces two bad choices. He will elicit sharp criticism no matter what the decision. ==
Happens every time you make conflicting promises.
- titan - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:14 pm:
Well, there’s a picking which side of the ice berg one prefers to hit facet to the straight up sign/veto dichotomy. So an attempt to split the baby with an AV seems likely.
- Telly - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:25 pm:
I say he signs it.
In Rauner’s mind, he made a deal back in April with the Republican caucuses in the GA: I’ll veto HB 40 and you’ll stick with me in the budget stalemate. The deal on the budget was broken, so the promised veto is off.
- Curl of the Burl - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 1:39 pm:
AV
Keep the trigger provisions.
Remove the Medicaid funding and state employee coverage for abortions.
- In A Minute - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:02 pm:
The likelihood that SCOTUS overturns Roe v. Wade=0%.
The likelihood that Illinois and multitudes of units of local government default on debt=100%.
But this is what the echo chamber wants. smh.

Quack, quack goes the lameduck.
- Anon221 - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:13 pm:
“I’m hearing from very good and multiple sources that Rauner is signing the bill.”
He’s ridin’ high on the US Supreme Court case news. If he signs HB40, he is signaling loud and clear what is and is not politically important to him in the long run. I can just see Proft’s finger shaking as he waits to hit “Post” to the rest of his “newspapers”.
- Arsenal - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:13 pm:
I really thought he’d choose to lie to Planned Parenthood, not his fellow Republicans.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:25 pm:

If true…
Diana Rauner wins… and keeps her reputation intact

Rauner is NOT a Republican.
- Arsenal - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:34 pm:
==Rauner is NOT a Republican.==
Well, it’s the coalition he tried to co-opt.
Lots of them made clear how mad they’d be if he did this. We’ll see if they stick to it.
- Macbeth - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:36 pm:
Now we’ll see how many GOPrs stick with Rauner. They’ll huff and puff — but ultimately they’ll take Rauner’s money and campaign for him.
It’s a win for Rauner, this — but it’s a demonstration of how little actual backbone the Illinois GOP possess. Even Proft will fall in line. He’ll grumble, but the day before the election, he’ll be praising Rauner like he’s some second coming.

As much as it pains me to type this such a move makes a potential McCann run for governor much less Quixotic than previously thought.

- Saluki - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:42 pm:
I am literally sick to my stomach. It makes me want to give up. When a Republican Governor cannot find the courage to veto this bill, or at the very least, the very least, AV the bill, it takes all motivation for me as a republican voter away.
- Deft Wing - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:43 pm:
Rauner’s a lameduck in THIS coming veto session. Beginning effective at 3:05 p.m. today.
Think on that.

This is Diana Rauner’s GOP…
Those GA Members who are still confused, watch at 3 pm
- Pot calling kettle - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:46 pm:
He made a pretty specific promise to Personal PAC and the bill was pretty much a copy of that promise. He then made a 180 degree flip with his promise to veto. I think he was hoping to veto the bill over the summer when everyone was on vacation. Instead, the public eye was turned directly on him and this bill and he had to choose which promise to keep.
This is Rauner moving to the left with an eye on Nov 2018. This signature indicates he does not feel he needs to worry about a challenge from the Right. And, why would he? Rauner bought the Right and pays its bills. Who would fund a challenger? Which Rauner-funded member of the GA would support a challenger?
- Fax Machine - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:47 pm:
Doea Todd Ricketts have access to the family’s money? If so he could run to the right of Rauner (pro-Trump, anti-HB40, anti-Trust act) and with the Cubs World Series sheen could win a 3 way race

Proft was Right all along…
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:51 pm:
Cecile Richards? Seems like hes’s going out of his way to alienate pro-life voters. Way out of his way.
No need to spike the football Governor.
- Buzz Fugazi - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 2:59 pm:
If there’s a hard left rejection of JB, the progressive/establishment Dem split could give Citizen Bruce a path to victory banging on his Madigan drum the way he used his Pat Quinn drum last time. But what about Citizen Kelly in the primary? Hahahahaha… I just had to say that for laughs. Then again, they laughed at Trump. Does Kelly have any Nazi or Russian mob friends on the down low?
- DarkHorse - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:02 pm:
Re: 47th Ward, and spiking the football
I’d like to know what Rauner’s very pro-life AG pick thinks of this. It shows the corruption of too much money in the system. Rauner funds the entire GOP, can get candidates to contort themselves just to curry his favor and money.

===This is either really smart…===
It’s smart.
Rauner owns the ILGOP.
It’s not up for discussion, it’s not up for debate.
They can’t touch him. They had 2 1/2 years to show Rauner that they (GA Members) matter. They didn’t.
Diana Rauner is calling the shots. It’s her money too.
- Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:16 pm:
Under the bus you go, blue dog dem. Welcome to the club. I actually feel sorry for you.
- Curl of the Burl - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:17 pm:
Watch out for Rep. McSweeney here. He is as socially conservative as they come, and he could form a sort of “unholy alliance” with Dan Proft and Richard Uihlein.
- walker - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:19 pm:
There still are plenty of “pro-choice” Republicans. One issue does not define a party.
- blue dog dem - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:26 pm:
Gramps. I have no care on abortion. Its Mrs Blue and her band of warriors this ex gov riled up. I gave up on Rauner almost immediately when he continued in the free spending method of governing we have experienced.
- Toast - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:28 pm:
This was never about choice as the left would have you believe, it was always about public funding of abortion.

==There still are plenty of “pro-choice” Republicans. One issue does not define a party.==
Walk, very few who favor public funding.
He spiked more than the football today. A veto or AV was quantifiable in it’s effect. This action will lead to a reaction he’s not ready for in the least.

LOL yeah, tell it to lifelong pro-choicer Donald Trump, who to this day is pretending to be pro-life just to hold on to those incredibly, mind-boggingly gullible pro-lifers.
I don’t care how outraged they are today, this time next year, they’ll be singing the usual chorus, “Vote GOP for [fill in the blank],” or whatever. Lucy, cue up the football.
- Lucky Pierre - Thursday, Sep 28, 17 @ 3:53 pm:
The cynicism and contempt most Illinois residents have for Illinois government is richly deserved.
From Sarah Feingolz comment that President Trump can repeal Roe v Wade and that abortion was going to be illegal in Illinois despite the fact we have a Republican pro choice Governor deserves 4 pinnochios from any fair minded fact checker.
Very sad day for Illinois. Can’t wait to hear the Cardinal’s statement condemning the “devout Catholic” legislative leaders who lead the General Assembly and State Senate as well as the Governor who promised to veto HB 40

Rauner believes he can ignore his last base of support.
They’re staying home on Election Day.

Rauner signed HB40.
Only a governor can sign a bill into law.
Aw, you’re welcome.
