Ives: “I’m letting it kind of boil up”

Tuesday, Oct 3, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* NBC 5

Illinois Republicans are split over whether to support Gov. Bruce Rauner after his decision to sign the abortion funding measure, House Bill 40.

Wheaton State Rep. Jeanne Ives has been approached by conservatives to consider opposing Rauner in the March primary, but for now, she is noncommittal.

“I’m not actively pursuing it, I’m letting it kind of boil up and we’ll see what happens,” Ives said. “I’m hoping somebody comes forward to run against him and we take him out as Republicans. Or I’m hoping that he decides on his own, ‘Look my base is eroded beneath me, there’s no chance of me winning because my base is going to stay home.’”

* A new Facebook group has been created

Wow! Almost 100 likes already! Thank you for showing your support! Invite your friends to like the page and join us in supporting Jeanne Ives for Governor.

23 hours later, they were up to 101 “likes.” Not exactly a boiling cauldron. Perhaps y’all can help.

* But, it is kind of interesting that the local county party is sharing the group’s event on its Facebook page…

* Meanwhile, on to the BND

As candidates for legislative positions jump into various races in Southern Illinois and around the state, state Sen. Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon, is still waiting to determine his next move.

McCarter, who is not running for re-election in 2018, has been recommended by Illinois Republican congressional members to be the next ambassador to Kenya. He has interviewed for the position, but the White House has yet to decide who it will nominate. […]

McCarter’s reaction to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s decision to sign House Bill 40 allowing Medicaid to pay for abortions left him and others saying Rauner should not run for re-election.

McCarter added he’s had numerous people ask him to consider a run for the governor’s office.

“My statement that he should not run for re-election has nothing to do with me and what my plans are,” McCarter said. “I believe he has betrayed in the greatest way the people that got him elected.”

Whatever he decides, maybe the Senator should refund the $30,000 that Rauner and his even more decidedly pro-choice wife have given him and his group over the years.

…Adding… WJBC

“I was frustrated,” said State Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, who was recently named the party’s Senate leader. “This is a bill that I opposed. I have voted pro-life, I am pro file. I had a number of meetings with the governor, one-on-one, to talk about this.”

Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin Illinois Democrats pushed through the abortion measure with Rauner in office to cause a rift within the Republican party.

Brady added the governor isn’t pushing a social agenda, but he doubts anyone would mount a primary challenge against Rauner next year.

“The governor would be very tough to beat and I think anyone who is thinking about a primary run better have a lot of money and better realize this is a big state and it’s hard just to jump into,” Brady said.

Brady said any challenger would likely need a lot of money and wouldn’t have a lot of time.

Boil up? Sounds like she needs to see a doctor.

  2. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:25 pm:

Don’t want to burst the bubble but the pic of the guy in one of the likes is none other than Ed Mullen, gay activist lawyer. I promise he’s not “liking” Ives because he actually wants her as governor.

  3. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:26 pm:

And now Elizabeth Austin too. Ditto my comment above.

  4. - cdog - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:28 pm:

Rauner has lost whatever was left of any republican leadership mandate. His platform is now purely non-republican.

Good for the Rock Island County Republicans. More of this.

===Whatever he decides, maybe the Senator should refund the $30,000 that Rauner and his even more decidedly pro-choice wife have given him and his group over the years.===

    This. Right here. This.

When members like a McCarter are thinking they “can’t support” or “feel betrayed”… except during those anxious times of waiting for an EFT from Bruce and Diana Rauner so your re-election guarantees social services and higher education get purposely hurt, I dunno if you get to play the “righteous indignation” card until you return to Bruce… and Diana… to both RaunerS the money you used to win or keep your seat.

At least Rep. Breen said he enabled Bruce Rauner.

  6. - cdog - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:32 pm:

I don’t think its reasonable to demand the return of money that was given by Rauner to support Republican positions.

It was Rauner that pivoted, not most of the recipients of his money.

Be loud and proud of using his money for Republican agenda items.

  7. - cdog - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:34 pm:

Moving forward, however, no one that is wanting to promote a conservative platform should take anymore Rauner money.

He’s a fake, and everybody knows it.

  8. - DuPage - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:42 pm:

Jeanne Ives for governor? No, no, 1000 times no!

  9. - Reaganing - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:48 pm:

Seeing Mccarter be a double loser for higher office would be hilarious. Please get him to run.

“Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin Illinois Democrats pushed through the abortion measure with Rauner in office to cause a rift within the Republican party.”

Those wily Democrats, forcing Rauner to lie to his own party! Will they stop at nothing?

  11. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:52 pm:

I get a sense that many regulars here aren’t realizing the severity of what Rauner did to his last supporters.

This idea of “give the money back” to show purity isn’t being pushed by those feeling backstabbed, but by those who’ve cheered the backstabbing.

Pro-taxpayer funding of abortions feel vindicated when their despised governor sold pro-life GOP voters out. They are not understanding the depth of this rift.

Additionally, a rift existed before Rauner sold out. This only worsened it.

Rauner finally betrayed the last group of supporters he had after they defended his disasterous term in office for three years. ILGOP support for Rauner was almost completely dependent upon his money and ability to win. These supporters didn’t imagine they would witness a GOP governor do to human life what Rauner so ham-handedly did.

    This is real.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 1:58 pm:

    To this…

===Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin Illinois Democrats pushed through the abortion measure with Rauner in office to cause a rift within the Republican party.===

With respect to Leader Brady, who I do like very much…

The PersonalPAC questionnaire and Diana Rauner herself made anything but a signature all but impossible.

In reality, Bruce Rauner has signed the most liberal abortion bill in the 50 states, as a Republican. No Democrat could’ve gone farther left that Rauner did, and no signature by any governor is “forced”. A signature is a choice made. A choice only a governor can make and follow through on in their duties.

I say all “that” to this…

The rift now exists because Republicans now realize we let a stranger in our house, but if we’re being real honest, we knew who Rauner was, Rauner just decided to remind Republicans who he is.

  13. - Responsa - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:00 pm:

Some Republicans agree with Rauner’s signing the bill. Some R’s who don’t agree with the crux of the bill are realists and understand why he did it. Some people call it governing. That also may be lost on a number of regulars here.

  14. - Generation X - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:01 pm:

VMan is 100% correct. The pro-life element along with the populist/Trump/immigration Hawks is a rather large swath of Republican Party.

An opponent in primary would not be welcome news for Gov.He stands a real chance of going down.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:03 pm:

===Some Republicans agree with Rauner’s signing the bill. Some R’s who don’t agree with the crux of the bill are realists and understand why he did it. Some people call it governing. That also may be lost on a number of regulars here.===

It’s not lost that Rauner signed a bill that no other governor in the county signed, Democrat or Republican.

How many GOP GA members were “green” on HB40?

  16. - Honeybadger - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:05 pm:

Please, please, please, Rep Ives run in the primary against Rauner. In fact, I am going to “like” the People’s Choice recruit Jeanne Ives for Governor page, even though I would never vote for you or Rauner.

  17. - Pundent - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:14 pm:

In the words of esteemed coach Dennis Green, the Rauners are who we thought they were.

If Ives, Breen or McCarter feel betrayed it’s only because they didn’t pay attention to Rauner in 2014 or didn’t believe him. The problem is that they were complicit in every other aspect of his agenda. And for me there in lies the hypocrisy. They were perfectly willing to cash his checks and enable the destruction that he wrought for 2.5 years. So spare me this nonsense of how he now needs to be “taken out”.

  18. - cdog - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:24 pm:

I’d like to know some more about the emails from Diana Rauner in the days leading up to the HB40 reveal.

I think she wrote that press release, it sure wasn’t the former IPI staff people in the Gov’s office.

The no-social agenda couple that can’t deliver a thing remotely resembling the GOP platform….

I hope he, and his wife, move along.

  19. - AlfondoGonz - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:27 pm:

I empathize with measured, reasonable, and decent conservatives when their less restrained party-fellows insist on pushing [several phrases that would likely block this post] like Rep. Ives.

  20. - DownstateKid - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:31 pm:

Brady lost a very winneable race to Quinn. I, or any other republicans, don’t need his election advice.

  21. - DeseDemDose - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:32 pm:

Rauner will just pass out more fat checks and all these conservative blowhards will fall into line like the weak sticks they always were. All talk no action.

  22. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:33 pm:

    - DownstateKid -

Rauner then beat Quinn, then signed HB40.

    So… there’s that I guess.

  23. - Avelt - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:36 pm:

Oswego Willy, I have a question about his statement: “The rift now exists because Republicans now realize we let a stranger in our house.”
Are you saying you are a Republican? Because your frequent comments sure don’t indicate that.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:39 pm:

    - Avelt -

I am a Republican. Long before Rauner, who is NOT in any way a Republican, came on the scene.

Making it about me isn’t making an argument.

Your concern is compelling, however, lol

  25. - DownstateKid - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:47 pm:

    OW,

Who was the last republican you voted? Did you vote for Romney? Bush Jr.? Brady? Edgar?

  26. - Pundent - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:47 pm:

I don’t know if I’d say that the Republicans let a stranger in their house. Rather they put their house up for sale, Rauner bought it, and he allowed them to live rent free. It’s his house and his rules. It’s the one thing that he’s been very transparent about.

  27. - DuPage Bard - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:50 pm:

Why is this a thing? They’re not running. They clamor and yell but they have all failed to garner any real support. So let’s just stop. Besides none of them have the actual courage to do it.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:50 pm:

The LAST Republican for POTUS was Kasich… lol

Why did you not list Trump, - DownstateKid -?

    Any reason?

  29. - Molly Maguire - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:53 pm:

Please please please if there is a God, please let Jeannie Ives be a candidate.

  30. - DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

In order to beat Rauner the Republicans need a seasoned politician who has run state wide before and is a hard core conservative.
I am all in for Allen Keyes The second time around is the charm

  31. - Molly Maguire - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

Honeybadger — didn’t mean to plagiarize. Only saw your comment later. Great minds…

  32. - DownstateKid - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

    OW,

So Ted Cruz wasn’t a Republican? I didn’t list Trump because I inferred some your posts over the past two years that you didn’t vote for him.

    You’re not sneaky.

  33. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:04 pm:

    ===So Ted Cruz wasn’t a Republican===

    Who said that?

    You need a nap.

  34. - DownstateKid - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:07 pm:

-The LAST Republican for POTUS was Kasich… lol-

Cruz got second in delegates. If Trump didn’t win, he would be the Republican nominee. Kasich never had a mathematical chance.

Hence, why I asked about Cruz.

And since you’ve been on the site all day, I think it’s time for you to either logoff and rest or actually do your job.

  35. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:09 pm:

===Cruz got second in delegates. If Trump didn’t win, he would be the Republican nominee===

No. It would have been a brokered convection.

This isn’t a Miss America thingy where whomever is second would be the new nominee.

“Don’t worry about me… mind your business”, lol

  36. - Deplorable - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:12 pm:

    Avelt,

OW is not much of a Republican, Democrat, looker, thinker, writer, or comedian. Frankly, I’m not aware of any merits. Still, his dedication and willingness to to be the best average he can be is an admirable quality. I guess.

  37. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:15 pm:

    ===Frankly, I’m not aware of any merits.===

Well, frankly, I think you covered it all.

    :)

    Oh Please -

So much for an open and intelligent conversation.

  40. - Curl of the Burl - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:23 pm:

Senators Duffy and McCarter were the only two Senate Republicans who (publicly) supported Rauner in the 2014 primary. The initial Personal PAC questionnaire was answered after the primary - so I can understand the concept that certain GOP officials were “duped” - but once both questionnaires came out the subterfuge was over.

However - and this is from a purely devil’s advocate stance - did Rauner’s most ardent supporters continue to stand with him and use the reasoning that he would renege on a hypothetical answer to a questionnaire? Could they have imagined that in early 2017 a bill that allowed for Medicaid and state employee health insurance dollars would pass through both chambers? Two to three years ago - before President Trump - did anyone think this was a REAL possibility? Answering a questionnaire is one thing. Actually following through on what you “promised” on a questionnaire is another.

A good example would be candidates or officials responding to anti-gun groups and claiming they would vote to ban guns. But if push came to shove would they really vote in that manner?

Saying one thing via a candidate questionnaire is one thing. Following through is another.

  41. - Morty - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:50 pm:

    LOL

The only person less effective in the legislature than Scott Drury (who did, after all, pass that Grateful Dead resolution).

  42. - Morty - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 3:52 pm:

I’d bet she pulled less support than Jack Roeser

  43. - Honeybadger - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 4:11 pm:

    Molly Maguire- I agree.

  44. - Honeybadger - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 4:13 pm:

So if Jeanne Ives does run, perhaps Dan Proft and his PAC will bankroll her and he can finally have someone in the Governor’s office who will take marching orders. /s

LOL. Let’s not go nuts here.

Ever checked out Proft’s various grifter committees? All those “loans” he’s repaid himself when the sugar daddies come through with the sweetness?

Those are big scores on the “loans.”

  46. - A guy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 4:33 pm:

Is anyone else even a little confused over the term “Boil up?”

I’ve heard about what things “boil down” to, but boiling up has me scratching my head.

  47. - A guy - Tuesday, Oct 3, 17 @ 4:34 pm:

i.e. Things float up and boil “down”.
