*** UPDATED x1 *** Republican AG candidate claims she was warned to make sure her brakes were working

Tuesday, Oct 17, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Pantagraph

Erika Harold isn’t running against Lisa Madigan anymore, but she still has the state attorney general’s family in her sights.

“One Madigan down means one more Madigan to go,” she said of Lisa and her father, House Speaker Mike Madigan, D-Chicago. “People said, if you run against the Madigans, be prepared. Take your car in to make sure your brakes are checked. That was advice I really got. … That’s not a great commentary on our political system.”

* Also from the piece

Harold mostly avoided partisan issues, but she said she opposes local sanctuary city designations — Chicago has named itself one, setting up a protracted battle with President Donald Trump’s administration on immigration policy — and dislikes how Lisa Madigan has opposed Trump, including suing on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

*** UPDATE ***  From the Harold campaign…

Just to clarify, Erika was asked if she supported sanctuary cities and she said she believed it was a federal issue.

The reporter also wrote that Erika dislikes how AG Madigan opposed Trump on DACA. The simple fact is DACA was never mentioned at the event yesterday - a fact the reporter acknowledges. We have yet to receive an answer as to why he included that in the story.

    =People said…=

    Sound familiar?

  2. - Gooner - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 9:56 am:

Paranoia is not a great trait for an A.G.

I really want to like Harold in part because I think that a GOP AG would be good for IL, but too often she does stuff like this.

  3. - Fax Machine - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 9:57 am:

Gooner is right, the Illinois Constitution clearly states that candidates for QG are not allowed to use humor during the campaign. What was she thinking?

  4. - Fax Machine - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 9:58 am:

    Candidates for AG - oops!

As an attorney, Erika Harold is as phony as an ambulance chaser now.

Really? Who exactly said that, who gives that advice…

    Pathetic.

  6. - DarkHorse - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:02 am:

Harold needs a primary challenge so she can up her game.

  7. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:02 am:

Humor is great, though a lot of candidates stink at delivery. Joking about your probable opponent’s family trying to have you killed? Not so funny.

  11. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:08 am:

It isn’t just the “check your breaks” knee-slapper, it’s the “one Madigan down means one more Madigan to go” comment. This candidate opens herself up for interpretations that she thinks we’re simple minded folks who still believe the Mob runs Cook county.

Her dithering silliness is worse commentary than having two offices held by family members. Republicans gave us Bush I, Bush II, and tried Bush III. Not a great source of anti-nepotism, in my opinion.

“That was advice I really got. …”
I don’t think she was joking — and with that, she’s made herself a joke.

  13. - Mr. Morris - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:11 am:

Comments like these from this candidate are why I hope Joe McMahon actually runs for AG.

  14. - Gooner - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:12 am:

    Fax Machine,

That’s humor? Effectively stating “My opponent might harm me” is something to laugh about?

    Really?

Just to be clear, “people” really” told Harold to be on guard because the Madigans would try to kill her.

    And she’s sad about that.

  19. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:18 am:

    “People said…”

This is worse than Gov. Gaslight’s attorney last year spreading unsubstantiated rumors — on GO stationary, no less — that AFSCME was all set to strike on Sept. 1.

And she wants to be the state’s top attorney. Unbelievable.

  20. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:18 am:

Who told her that? That’s the only question she should be asked until she comes clean and says she made it all up.

This mentality is a direct consequence of the intentional strategy to turn Speaker Madigan into a caricature of some nefarious machine mobster. Between Rauner, Proft, IPI and the Tribune, people really want to believe this is true of Madigan. That is scary. If they can do it to him, they can do it to anyone.

  23. - Ahoy! - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:23 am:

Harold must not be running to win the November election if she’s defending Trump in Illinois. I wonder what she’s running for.

Just ‘cause you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get ya’.

===Who told her that? That’s the only question she should be asked until she comes clean and says she made it all up.===

    1,000%

Erika Harold wants to be the next Attorney General of Illinois and she is spreading inuendo that she won’t say who told her that her brakes might not “work”?

Who told her that an attempt on her life was eminent because “Madigan”?

    I seriously want to know.

As a licensed attorney, has she, as an officer of the Court brought these threats to light to local authorities?

Ironic given how when she ran for congress 4 years ago it was Rodney Davis supporters on the GOP side who really did attack her viciously. Now of course Erika and Rodney are like peas and carrots.

    Illinois politics, adorable.

  29. - DarkHorse - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:30 am:

She’s obviously a lot smarter than this ridiculous “check your brakes” story. What is really shows is that she’s allowing herself to be used to mouth Rauner’s anti-Madigan talking points.

  30. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:33 am:

Scurrilous. But she’s a Republican. So is Trump. So is Rauner. She cast her lot. And if you vote for any Republican, you own them all. They let the racists and the nationalists in their tent. If you want to vote alongside those folk, be my guest, but lose all credibility.

===She’s obviously a lot smarter than this ridiculous “check your brakes” story===

It’s not obvious yet. I think you’re probably right, but then that means she’s lying intentionally.

So which is she: not smart or a liar?

  33. - chi - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:43 am:

Here’s more advice- stop listening to the crazies, and stop amplifying their paranoid conspiracy theories.

  34. - DarkHorse - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:44 am:

    To 47th Ward,

Not to avoid your question or defend Harold, but her basic problem is she doesn’t know how to run a campaign based on a critique of the opposition. Her race against Davis was pretty polite. She’s trying to be someone she’s not - a slash and burn campaigner - and it shows.

  35. - Saluki - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:45 am:

Meh. Barely newsworthy. It’s a throw away line. Harold is going be just fine in this race.

  36. - Chris P. Bacon - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:47 am:

Erika Harold can win this thing, if Rauner doesn’t drag her down too much.

  37. - Timmeh - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:47 am:

Did you get your brakes checked?

  38. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:48 am:

===Meh. Barely newsworthy. It’s a throw away line. Harold is going be just fine in this race===

If it’s just that, then who told her that.

If Harold made it up, how can anyone trust an Attorney General who’s job is to protect consumers when that AG thinks nothing of throwing around such remarks that question their own well-being.

Harold is either a phony with a throw-away line, knowing it’s not true, or a bigger phony claiming her actual life may be in danger, but knowing its untrue.

    I’ll let you choose.

  39. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:49 am:

    ===She’s trying to be someone she’s not===

I guess I’ll have to take your word for it, but she’s also defining herself to the whole state at the moment. She’d be wise to remember that.

If she has any staff, they might want to prep her better before her next interview. In addition to the cray-cray, she might offer a more thoughtful response on the role of an AG when the President’s actions threatens large numbers of Illinois residents. As bad as her Madigan sound byte was, the DACA answer was worse.

And A guy claimed she has “gravitas.” Lol.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:53 am:

===Erika Harold can win this thing.===

    Hmm. Maybe, maybe not.

Rich had a Post where Lisa Madigan was polling about 34%, but Rich also added this nugget…

===I checked around and was told that’s true (Lisa at 34%), but she (Madigan) was leading Erica Harold by 10 points in the head-to-head.===

Lisa ain’t running. When Lisa was running, Erika was behind, 10 points.

We’ll see. Making up stories about her physical well-being is T a great start.

  42. - A guy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 10:54 am:

==And A guy claimed she has “gravitas.” Lol.==

She does have gravitas. That being said, I’ll concede immediately that this line was dopey. There’s so much material that could get a point across. Going in this direction; I wish she put the brakes on this discussion.

Learn a lesson and move on.

  47. - Curl of the Burl - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 11:12 am:

Roscoe - in EVERY county? I doubt it. Would a Lisa-Erika race have been close? Who knows. But in 2014 a severely underfunded and undermanned Paul Schimpf won counties against Lisa Madigan.

  48. - BothSidesofHisMouth - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 11:16 am:

Perhaps she is making it up as some have suggested (and I am a Dem so I have no dog in this fight), but I have little trouble envisioning some downstate GOP picnic attendee offering her this sort of wisdom/advice. She didn’t say the advice came from high level politicos or party operatives, right? Just “people”… It’s kind of low-ball and silly to reference it in public, and again if she is flat out making it up that is disturbing - but (and maybe it is because I come from rural downstate) I can easily see random folks at the coffee shop offering her that advice.

I don’t mean to pile on here, really I don’t, but the Update/Reply from Harold’s campaign is odd: who cares about the reporter’s “process”, I more interested in Harold’s actual position on DACA and Trump’s policies as they may impact Illinois. Well Erika, ALL over social media.. IPI looking at you… the Madigans’ lives are threatened, or their violent ends fantasized about. Just about daily, and yet, not so much whining about it in public. Do a wee bit more research, which I would think an attorney should be good it.

  70. - honeybadger - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 12:46 pm:

with Lisa Madigan deciding to not run again, Erika’s strategy to use the Madigan name went out the window. So disheartening they can’t come up with a real plan to move Illinois forward.

Whew, that is a detailed, thought-out clarification. It took time, it went point to point, even tying off ends.

It shows that the Harold Campaign is paying attention.

    Well done, thank you…

… but one last question, since clarity is critical to the Harold Campaign, so much so we are all lucky to get that clarification that’s so great…

… who told Erika to check her brakes, and will she be reporting that to local authorities since as an officer of the Court, levying such an accusation seems like something an officer of the Court world do.

    So? Harold Campaign?

    Thanks.

    OW (the republican, lol) -

Could it be she was talking in hyperbolic terms? Could it be that comment was meant politically, figuratively?

Or is that one comment enough for you to completely dismantle and dismiss her candidacy?

===Or is that one comment enough for you to completely dismantle and dismiss her candidacy?===

Speaking only for myself, I’d say to remember that you only get one chance to make a first impression. Is this the impression she hoped to make?

  75. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 1:50 pm:

    ===OW (the republican, lol) ===

I’m not a Raunerite if that’s what you’re getting at. Harold is supporting Rauner, Rauner is apparently supporting her. You should get over yourself making it about me.

===Could it be she was talking in hyperbolic terms? Could it be that comment was meant politically, figuratively?===

    Great question.

When she responds, then you and I will both know.

===Or is that one comment enough for you to completely dismantle and dismiss her candidacy?===

As an officer of the Court and an advocate for victims, real victims, that comment seems either tone deaf to her own persona, or its purposely misleading people… or she can say who told her to check her brakes and then as an officer of the court say a credible threat exists.

    It’s up to her now.

  76. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 1:51 pm:

===It was an obvious joke dude===

Donald Trump says that a lot.

    Hmm.

  77. - Jack Kemp - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 1:55 pm:

=== I can’t imagine she will respond, either. Because there’s nothing to clarify and the only people who even remotely care or think this is in some way a big deal post on this board===

If Erika Harold wants to keep out there her foolish statement, as an officer of the Court that she was told to check her brakes as she touts credentials of a victim advocate, that’s her choice.

Trump makes jokes all the time like that.

Harold is like Trump. I get that.

Willy, with as big of a joke as you are, I’d think you’d know one when you see one.

This is a nonsense nonstory. But hey, keep running with this weird “officer of the court” thing until you’re blue in the face. Try practicing in the mirror - cause this is the same thing as talking to yourself.

  84. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:08 pm:

I am not. Next time ask me on Autism Awareness Day. You’ll know when it comes around, it’s the day Governor Rauner usually cuts autism funding.

The Harold Crew issued an update.

    They did.

They omit that the cutting of the brakes was a joke?

So, what did Harold mean? She’s an officer of the Court.

    Classy JK. Classy.

Of course it’s a joke. It’s not an appropriate joke from someone running for the office of AG.

==… with as big of a joke as you are… ===

That’s about right. I’m up there.

But, if you’re argument is Erika Harold jokes like Donald Trump, I’m cool with that.

If that’s the take, Harold and Trump have that similar humor, yep, that’s cool.

“People said, if you run against the Madigans, be prepared. Take your car in to make sure your brakes are checked. That was advice I really got. … That’s not a great commentary on our political system.”

Repeating - “That was advice I really got.”

She said it’s not a joke. It’s there, in quotes, to clarify this was not a joke.

You know how I know it’s not a joke? Erika Harold said it’s not a joke.

===Of course it’s a joke. It’s not an appropriate joke from someone running for the office of AG.===

    Yep. And “ball game”

    That’s the whole point.

Being flippant about this, no clarification, a decision to let it be, that’s the point.

Those all worried about “understanding” and using clinical medical terms, read, understand, it’s about what’s happening, and ignoring that words matter, especially for an AG.

    Well said, - Demoralized -

  89. - illini97 - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:16 pm:

Also, we are now down to the level of jokes about Autism?

Commenters, take a breath. Stand up and go look in the mirror. Autism jokes are below this community.

  90. - Iggy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:19 pm:

you either have a disability or you are very nervous about candidate Harold. Trying to dissect a joke this long is just sad. let it go.

  91. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:21 pm:

    ==you either have a disability==

    Enough *exclamation point*

  92. - Reaganing - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:22 pm:

What is an appropriate joke, or is there a such thing to those posting here?

  93. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:25 pm:

===She said it’s not a joke. It’s there, in quotes, to clarify this was not a joke===

Which is EXACTLY why I want her to clarify.

Just… clarify. They clarified a policy point but not the quote?

  94. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:32 pm:

    ==What is an appropriate joke==

Jokes that aren’t about cut brake lines.

  95. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:32 pm:

===What is an appropriate joke, or is there a such thing to those posting here?===

I can’t speak for others, but I find jokes about murder to be the funniest. If you can work in a sexist or racist angle in too, all the better. Pedophilia is another knee slapper.

You got any good ones to share?

  96. - Reaganing - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:43 pm:

    - aren’t about cut brake lines - why is this an off limits topic to joke about? Seriously, if you’re offended by this you are just looking for things to be offended about.

    47th ward
Maybe. Sometimes it’s best to combine those topics. For example, if the first joke doesn’t land well, I recommend to then double down and throw in another one of those topics you mentioned.

  97. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 2:48 pm:

    ===Sometimes it’s best to combine those topics===

Jesse Jackson, Denny Hastert and Erica Harold walk into a bar…

  98. - Skeptic - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 4:57 pm:

“why is this an off limits topic to joke about?” Your momma never taught you that there’s a time and place for everything?

  99. - James - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 5:02 pm:

Lisa Madigan would have never made such a comment; she has always conducted herself in a professional manner.

  100. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 5:30 pm:

=== The reporter also wrote that Erika dislikes how AG Madigan opposed Trump on DACA. The simple fact is DACA was never mentioned at the event yesterday - a fact the reporter acknowledges. ===

Someone ought to advise Erika Harold and her press secretary regarding the First Amendment.

Unlike moot court and any other trial lawyers Ms, Harold might have participated in, facts can be entered into a story without actually being given in sworn statements before a judge and cross-examined by Ms. Harold and her team. If Ms. Harold supports Lisa Madigan’s decision on DACA, then by all means tell us.

Otherwise the statement is true and the reporter is free to say it over-and-over.

It is going to be a long election cycle if Erika Harold wants to litigate even the statements she agrees with.

  101. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 5:45 pm:

Just remember that Ms. Harold learned politics on the team of Tim Johnson and Mark Shelden. Expect no less than this level of nonsense. Was just a matter of time.

  102. - Retired Educator - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 6:40 pm:

Rauner turned me into an Independent. Ms. Harold and a few others are keeping me there. This was an inappropriate comment, and she should apologize.

  103. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 6:46 pm:

    – That was advice I really got. … That’s not a great commentary on our political system.”–

I think that’s what you say to convince people that you’re being serious, and not joking.

  104. - Rabid - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 7:22 pm:

“I have a great opportunity to introduce our republican principals” mission accomplished

  105. - Jaxon - Tuesday, Oct 17, 17 @ 9:42 pm:

Duct tape commercials on the way ?
