Republicans get into the “holiday spirit”

Friday, Dec 15, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Some of these are pretty clever…

* Finke

If anyone thought the holiday season would caused politicians to tone down the snark, guess again.

In fact, Gov. BRUCE RAUNER is using the holiday spirit to take another shot at his favorite target, House Speaker MICHAEL MADIGAN. At brucerauner.com we have #ThanksMike where you can “show your thanks to Mike Madigan this holiday season.” You enter your name, email and zip code and then type in a message.

A couple of messages are already posted. Gary says, “I am Mad Again at Mike Madigan. Please resign and make Illinois a better place.” Becky writes, “Thanks, Mike, that pretty soon, my property taxes will be so high, that I will be moving out of this state. I have no obligation to pay for your corruption.”

Clearly, Rauner is providing an outlet for people moved by the spirit of the season.

I couldn’t find the #ThanksMike page on the site’s main page, so I reached out to the campaign and they pointed me to this link.

“Look, Daddy! Teacher says every time a Republican is elected, we go further into debt.”

  2. - Owen Wilson - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:44 am:

Perhaps the dankest political memes in all of Illinois

  3. - cdog - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:46 am:

Those are awesome. Thanks for the good laughs.

  4. - Honeybear - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:48 am:

They are clever. Good clean hit.
    As to the comments
    I’d like ask “Becky” to
    Go ahead and move.
    Seriously
    If your property taxes
    Override everything
Great about living in this state
    Then I strongly
    Encourage you to leave.

    I absolutely can’t stand the
We’ll leave because of taxes crap
    If that were true
    New York
    And California
    Would be
    Vacant

  5. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:48 am:

Home Alone one is cute. The rest are incredibly lame.

  6. - VanillaMan - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:48 am:

Governor Scrooge seems to be unable to sing more than a couple carols, “Let It Fail”, and “Oh Come, All Ye Hateful”,

  7. - Perrid - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:50 am:

They are funny, though the fact that Republicans are trying to compare Democrats to Ebeneezer Scrooge is incredibly ironic…

  8. - Montrose - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:53 am:

These are clever and folks will actually look at them, which is kinda the point of advertising.

Whoever won the debate about keeping “syrup” in the Elf gif is someone that gets humor.

  9. - W Flag - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:55 am:

Let us have a montage of Speaker Madigan reminding us that all of his actions are designed to protect working families.

  10. - Arsenal - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:58 am:

Yeah, sure, dank memes will probably save them.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:58 am:

They are fun and funny. Some are even laugh out loud funny

Bruce Rauner is still polling at 30% approval, so this is what the Raunerites do when the governor is a failure.

    It’s fun. It is.

  12. - Rogue Roni - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 9:59 am:

These will get shared by a bunch of Fox News grandpas and the MAGA crowd but if this is the best Rauners frat boys can do they are in trouble

  13. - Jocko - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:04 am:

I’m surprised they didn’t superimpose JB’s head with Michael Caine’s.

The Dems should counter with Rauner’s 2.8 billion dollar “debt present” left under Illinois’s tree.

  14. - Gettysburgaddress - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:06 am:

Bruce Rauner has been pushing a big tax hike for almost three years. What a hypocrite!

    http://wgntv.com/2015/07/08/rauner-give-me-reform-ill-sign-a-tax-hike-for-illinois/

  15. - cdog - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:06 am:

hb, I understand your logic about property taxes and taxes in general, but CA is not a good example for your argument.

Google “California outmigration” with a search parameter of the last month. Orange County Register, from Nov 16, 2017, has a good one. “California is a national leader in outbound moves: Where did they go?”

AZ and TX got about 135,000 new taxpayers from CA last year.

The news buzz out of the Golden State this week, is a coming per mile tax enforced with surveillance devices, and a $1B illegal immigrant healthcare initiative.

Illinois is a national outlier on taxing its citizens. Many feel enough is enough and can see the writing on the wall. Republicans are making a good point, and educating, with this humor.

  16. - Chris P. Bacon - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:06 am:

So immature. IL GOP has less than 15,000 twitter followers. No one is paying attention to this local yokel pettiness.

  17. - Boone's is Back - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:07 am:

Nice to see the ILGOP become the party of trolls. Maybe they should try advancing an agenda of their own or pushing some policy proposals?

    Oh that’s right… they don’t have any.

  18. - dbk - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:09 am:

Funny, sort of, I guess, maybe.

Shouldn’t somebody (not naming names) start a “Thanks, Governor Rauner” meme to join in the fun?

  19. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:12 am:

“Bruce Rauner is still polling at 30% approval, so this is what the Raunerites do when the governor is a failure.”

Do you have anything more recent than the partisan DGA poll from July that had Rauner at 34% approval but still had Charlie Cook rating the race as a tossup?

How big is the coop in your backyard to count all of your Chickens?

  20. - anon2 - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:16 am:

Only Democrats raise taxes? It seems the current GOP has put Republican governors down the memory hole.

Gov. Ogilvie was a Republican, and he initiated the first state income tax. Also Republicans were governors Thompson, Edgar and Ryan, who all supported various tax hikes.

  21. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:18 am:

These are good, clean fun - why shouldn’t the kids have a little fun with photoshop before Xmas? There probably aren’t too many people cruising brucerauner.com, and those that are are already big supporters so might as well give them a chuckle before the holidays.

  22. - IllinoisBoi - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:23 am:

Democrats could make a commercial with a Ghost of Christmas Present visiting an Illinois family, who look sadly at an empty chair where Grampa the veteran used to sit before he died of Legionnaire’s disease…ok ok, way too dark, way too dank.

  23. - Annonin' - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:24 am:

Meanwhile GovJunk in box full of FOI requests for Quincy Vets Home info. Glad he has time to yuk it up.

  24. - @misterjayem - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:28 am:

“At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”
    “Are there no prisons?”
    “Plenty of prisons…”
“And the workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”
    “Both very busy, sir…”
“Those who are badly off must go there.”
“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”
“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

    – MrJM

  25. - Moe Berg - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:31 am:

Hahaha. Really great. Maybe a reporter could show them to some of the families whose loved ones died of Legionairre’s disease at the Quincy Veterans Home and asked them to rate their comedy quotient.

Even better, on the day their national brethren are giving more to those who already have the most in the tax bill, legislation that will hurt IL and which the governor has not opposed, just blandly encouraged, well it’s just more jolliness that’s really going to leave the voters in a giving mood when it comes to the GOP next fall.

Yuck it up, GOP frat boys, for next year you will be given a good, hard kick in the electoral rear.

  26. - Owen Wilson - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:32 am:

The best outcome of the 2018 election would be a dank meme war. I’ll grab my popcorn

  27. - Huh? - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:33 am:

1.4% gimmick to send a message to Madigan is a fund raising scheme. To send the message, you have to donate to 1.4%’s campaign.

  28. - We'll See - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 10:42 am:

These are so funny that the ILGOP should share them with the bond rating agencies; maybe that would lift the agencies’ spirits this holiday season and show that we really are on the right track.

  29. - King Louis XVI - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 11:14 am:

Were these the Governor’s office work products from the BTIA that Murashko didn’t want shared with political operation?

  30. - anonymous - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 11:31 am:

If Rauner were Ebeneezer Scrooge he would have fired Bob Cratchit long ago.

  31. - m - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 11:42 am:

Been seeing these in my feed. Actually impressed with the creativity and “fun” nature. This is the kind of stuff that is easy to get people to share.

The Pritzker/Madigan = taxes is a good message because it’s simple and most everyone hates paying taxes. That being said, this may be as deep as they can go in terms of messaging, so if it doesn’t work, there isn’t much else on deck.

  32. - Demoralized - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:00 pm:

==How big is the coop in your backyard to count all of your Chickens?==

Did he make a comment regarding potential election outcomes? He did not. He simply noted the Governor’s approval rating which is indeed that low no matter what your Raunerite head thinks.

  33. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:06 pm:

===Do you have anything more recent than the partisan DGA poll from July===

    1) it was September. Rich has a whole post on it. You know that, or the “other Dred Pirate Roberts”, knew it, one of the “Lucky Pierres” did.

    2) anytime you want to show “better” numbers, feel free

    3) the 55% disapproval should scare you more.

  34. - Demoralized - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:07 pm:

    ==the 55% disapproval should scare you more.==

But Mike Madigan . . . I figured I’d make his argument for him.

  35. - Honeybear - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:20 pm:

    Actually it’s pretty ironic
    Positing taxes as the evil
    When in fact tax revenue
    Is what undergirds and
    Supports our
    Communities
    The disadvantaged
    Those in need
    Correct me if I’m wrong
But the spirit of Christmas is about
    Well……
Not how they’ve put it above
    It’s a clever reversal
    But
    Well….
I see Ebenizer being stingy about taxes and having to pay them. Denying his community revenue that helps the Crotchets.
    What I see here is
    Justification of
    Selfishness

  36. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:49 pm:

Feel free to post any poll that has the Generic Democratic challenger over 50%.

Madigan as the most unpopular politician in the state anointing JB Pritzker, who does not disagree on a single issue from Madigan. as the favored candidate will weigh heavily on him and every other Democrat running for the House.

President Hillary also placed a lot of faith in polls 11 months before an election

  37. - Rich Miller - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:50 pm:

===Feel free to post any poll===

Have you seen the national generic numbers lately?

  38. - Finally Out - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:50 pm:

I left my message in support of Madigan against Rauner. Might not always like Madigan’s approach, but there’s nothing Rauner has done I can agree with.

After I submitted it, I was directed to a page to donate to Rauner’s campaign. I passed.

  39. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 12:56 pm:

===President Hillary also placed a lot of faith in polls 11 months before an election===

In Illinois, Clinton was up 15-18 points… won by 17.

    So there’s that.

    === ===Feel free to post any poll===

Have you seen the national generic numbers lately?===

Virginia and Alabama exit polling of women, minorities, millennial, their pluralities and turnout…

That’s not a good sign here in Illinois, a state Clinton won by 17 points, statewide, and Trump’s midterm.

But, you ignore that 55% disapproval abc 30% approval…

    … and the wave.

  40. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 1:08 pm:

So you are counting your chickens. Good luck running on permanently raising taxes and not reforming Illinois’s government or business environment.

A lot of legislators from both parties don’t think that will work and are retiring. They sure could have used your pep talk.

  41. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 1:16 pm:

If you want to crown JB go ahead and crown him. He is who we though he was.

  42. - Demoralized - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 2:16 pm:

    ==Good luck running on ==

Well, since the Governor has nothing to run on other than being Cry Baby in Chief then it should be a pretty even race.

  43. - Chris P. Bacon - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 2:46 pm:

IL GOP childish tweets lucky if they get 10 combined likes & retweets. Meanwhile not a peep about tax relief and real work President is doing.

  44. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:01 pm:

Yes I agree Demoralized it should be a pretty even race.

Even in a deep blue Illinois where Hillary won by 17 points, despite what usual suspects who are already measuring the drapes for JB say.

You won’t admit it but that is more of a commentary on the ineptitude and insider dealing of Cook County Democrats for decades than Bruce Rauner.

  45. - wordslinger - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:02 pm:

–If you want to crown JB go ahead and crown him. He is who we though he was.

    The late great Dennis Green–

    Yeah, Green lost that game.

Strange gaps in the Illinois history program at Skopje Bot U.

  46. - @misterjayem - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:06 pm:

“How big is the coop in your backyard to count all of your Chickens? *** So you are counting your chickens.”

Until Governor Not-in-Charge agrees to debate Jeanne Ives, you guys probably shouldn’t talk about chickens.

  47. - don the legend - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:21 pm:

A good “Carnac the Magnificent” contest.

Ditka and the late Dennis Green.

Name two people that LP quotes who …

  48. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:26 pm:

    “Lucky Pierre”

Only cowards and losers live in the past.

Rauner being the worst Republican governor in America today with the ultra-liberal Democratic costal social agenda… while a want for destroying labor, higher education, and ruining social services not named The Ounce…

Will Diana, again, be the only person Bruce knows who will vouch for him… after all the damage Diana and Bruce did to Illinois?

Then again, leaders are in charge.

Bruce isn’t in charge, Bruce Rauner isn’t any type of leader.

  49. - Lucky Pierre - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:30 pm:

Yes he did lose that game to the Bears after being up by 20 points in the 4th quarter. Kind of like Robbie Mook and Hillary Clinton.

What is Jeanne Ives polling at and how much money has she raised? isn’t there a minimum threshold for debates? Otherwise the pride of Oswego would be up there.

  50. - don the legend - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:52 pm:

Lucky, Rauner said “I’m not in charge.”

What part of that statement don’t you understand? You sound as strange as Rauner looks in all of his costumes.

  51. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 3:56 pm:

=== Otherwise the pride of Oswego would be up there.===

I’m not running for Governor, lol.

Why all you different “Lucky Pierre” think it’s about me…

Read the past comments the other “Lucky Pierre” had.

If you did, you wouldn’t make it about me, it never worked.

  52. - Demoralized - Friday, Dec 15, 17 @ 4:03 pm:

    ==You won’t admit it==

lol. That comment from you made me laugh.
