Lipinski to speak at annual March for Life in midst of Democratic primary

Thursday, Dec 21, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release

March for Life, the world’s largest annual pro-life demonstration, is proud to announce their initial list of speakers for the 45th annual March for Life held in Washington, D.C. on January 19th, 2018. This year’s impressive lineup will include NFL/MLB star Tim Tebow’s mother Pam Tebow, former NFL player Matt Birk and his wife Adrianna, U.S. Representatives Dan Lipinski (D-IL)…

* From NARAL…

The anti-choice group March for Life has announced that Illinois Congressman Dan Lipinski, a Democrat, will headline their annual march on Washington D.C. in January of 2018. Lipinski has made no secret of his right-wing agenda, which includes more than a decade of voting to curtail the rights of women, immigrants, and LGBT Americans. Billed as the world’s largest anti-abortion gathering, the annual March for Life supports banning abortion nationwide.

“Lipinski is doubling-down on his bid to ban abortion and subjugate women to second class citizens. Despite the ‘D’ next to his name, Lipinski consistently pushes an extreme right-wing agenda that couldn’t be more out-of-touch with the needs of hardworking Illinois families,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America’s States Campaigns Director, James Owens. “Luckily, Illinois voters can choose a true pro-choice champion to represent their values in Congress. Marie Newman will fight to ensure that women and families always have equal opportunities and equal representation.”

NARAL endorsed Marie Newman in November and has been a powerful force to help elect a true progressive to represent women and families across the 3rd district. NARAL launched a Let’s #DumpDan campaign including a website and TV ad as part of their larger plan to unseat the anti-choice incumbent.

As Co-chair of the Democrats for Life and co-sponsor of over 50 bills in Congress that restrict a woman’s right to choose, Lipinski has made restricting a woman’s right to control their own bodies and futures a hallmark of his political career.

…Adding… As a commenter points out, this is certainly an “interesting” Democratic primary strategy…

…Adding More… Press release…

“Dan Lipinski is no Democrat — just this past Monday, he was hamming it up with Paul Ryan and Donald Trump in the White House as they celebrated raising taxes on working families and giving a giant tax cut to big corporations and the rich. It’s yet another line in his long record of siding with Republicans against working families and consistently undermining the rights of women, immigrants, and the LGBTQ community. That’s not what the voters of Illinois’s 3rd district want or need — they need a progressive champion like Marie Newman who will fight for them in Congress. The people of Illinois deserve a real Democrat and progressive leader who will side with them — not with Wall Street.” — Marissa Barrow, spokesperson, Progressive Change Campaign Committee

* Meanwhile, in a different Democratic congressional primary…

Today, Sol Flores announced that she has received the endorsement of EMILY’s List.

Flores said, “I am honored to receive the endorsement of EMILY’s List. Women around the country are stepping up demanding a seat at the table. We must have more women in Congress who will fight for a livable wage, affordable health care, reproductive rights and fair taxes for the middle class. I have spent my life helping the most vulnerable families and youth of our community. We need their voices, their stories, and their ideas in Washington now more than ever. They want and need to be heard.”

Flores is up against Chuy Garcia and several others. She’s the only woman in the race.

    NARAL
    LOL
Another throw back to the Nixon era.
Time to bring back Chevy Chase.

Lipinski got elected by Democrats in an incredibly undemocratic way - appointment nepotism. Now they are bothered by him?

  2. - NIU Grad - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 1:59 pm:

If you haven’t seen, he was getting some attention on Twitter for laughing it up with Paul Ryan at the White House (behind the president).

An interesting strategy he’s taking here…

  3. - Spade - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:03 pm:

Why is anyone surprised that Democrats are banding together to remove Lipinski? He’s pro-life and a Democrat, and a few months ago the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee Tom Perez said that you can’t do that. He said being pro-choice is “non-negotiable” for Democratic candidates.

The party of “diversity and inclusion” welcomes you, unless you don’t fit their superior world view.

    – This year’s impressive lineup will include NFL/MLB star Tim Tebow’s mother Pam Tebow, former NFL player Matt Birk and his wife Adrianna, U.S. Representatives Dan Lipinski (D-IL)…–

Doesn’t matter what the issue is — that’s not an impressive lineup.

  5. - Pieroge tirebiter - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:06 pm:

His district is very Catholic and Hispanic and Hispanics are also very Catholics. No brainer for him

  6. - NeverPoliticallyCorrect - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:08 pm:

How Lipinski got elected is just so Illinois but also so unrelated to this topic. However, it is clear that killing unborn babies is important for many in the Dem. party. And they will tolerate no diversity of thought on this issue. Kinda hilarious for a party that holds diversity as one of their pillars of belief.

  7. - wordslinger - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:10 pm:

–His district is very Catholic and Hispanic and Hispanics are also very Catholics.–

It wasn’t drawn to be “very Hispanic.” Just the opposite.

    But it’s been changing rapidly.

  8. - wordslinger - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:14 pm:

–And they will tolerate no diversity of thought on this issue–

The 2016 Dem nominee for vice president opposes abortion.

You like to repeat what you hear on TV, don’t you?

  9. - Pieroge tirebiter - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:22 pm:

Word. Very true. Silvana Tabares and Marty Sandoval are carrying his water for him down there.

  10. - 3rd district voter - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 2:23 pm:

It is disturbing how little tolerance there is for pro-life views in the Democratic party. This is the sort of issue that is leading people to sort themselves into the GOP.

–This is the sort of issue that is leading people to sort themselves into the GOP.–

Really? I’d be fascinated to see some links showing an increase in those who self-identify as either Republican or Democrat.

    Wishing doesn’t make it so.

  14. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 3:01 pm:

    What makes him a Democrat?
ILGOP should nominate him if he loses the primary.

  15. - Ron - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 3:12 pm:

He loves unions, taxes and spending. His just pro life.

  16. - Roman - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 3:16 pm:

Lipinski could be a casualty of Ives challenging Rauner. Lipinski will have difficulty mobilizing pro-life voters in the district to take a Dem ballot…most will stay home in the GOP primary to support Ives. If Newman can make it a close race (emphasis on “if’) that could prove decisive.

  17. - DuPage Dave - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 3:38 pm:

The elder Lipinski was an old school Daley (RJ) democrat. He handed the seat off to his kid, who can’t claim to be any kind of democrat at all. He would love to switch to the R side and complete his embrace of Trump, but is more likely to get re-elected staying where he is. Nothing to admire about the guy at all.

  18. - Shytown - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 3:51 pm:

Lipinski is not a Dem. Time to go.

  19. - West Side the Best Side - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:01 pm:

Are we sure that’s Lipinski in the background, don’t think I’ve ever seen the man smile.

  20. - From Bridgeview - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:15 pm:

I live in his district. Odd shaped district but mostly makes sense. But why do we have a slice of Chicago in Bridgeport? Our demographics are super diverse with some conflicting groups. We’re a bit of a purple area at times. Catholic, yes, but also home to the large growing Arab American population. I’d say the common thread is most people are immigrants or second generation. Democrats, yes, but conservative Democrats in my area.

His district includes much of Madigan’s district. That must be fun for him..

Most of the suburbs are slightly on the economic decline. Bridgeport, his Chicago enclave is sort of gentrifying. And partially part of the expanding Chinatown of the South Loop. Good guy, attended his town hall meeting.

  21. - From Bridgeview - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:21 pm:

More on Lipinski. Some negative comments on this thread about him. He represents his constituency well. We’re not northside liberals, but more traditional union democrats. Conservative democrats. He needs to carefully tread with the abortion topic, but this was not a sin for his district. Against he represents it well and understands his voters. No mistakes here.

  22. - From Bridgeview - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:26 pm:

One interesting fact for his district’s future is that he has a sizeable and growing Arab American, primarily Palestinian American, population in his district. And demands to confront Israel or take an anti-Israel stance could be fatal as a congressman. So he’ll need to carefully tread. Very doable though, just emphasize peace and stay away from criticizing any side.

  23. - Well Actually - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:28 pm:

re: “conservative Democrats” - the 3rd Congressional District went for Bernie Sanders by 8 points.

  24. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:36 pm:

===3rd Congressional District went for Bernie Sanders by 8 points. ===

And for HRC in the general by 16.5.

  25. - 42nd - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:37 pm:

Someone tell me the last time a Chicago-area democrat lost to a primary challenger in congressional or general assembly race.

I can think of Guzzardi - but that took three tries and the Green Party candidate took a solid chop at the incumbent first (who was by no means a superstar).

It simply doesn’t happen around here. Lipinski will win +9 to +14.

Plus, as a dem, I really hated seeing him vilified for sharing a laugh with Paul Ryan. Lipinski is a first class idiot for doing the pro-life fundraiser thing but he shouldn’t be maligned for being collegial with his fellow legislators. There was a time when that sort of thing was de rigueur in Congress (roughly the same period of time when they actually got things done on a bipartisan basis).

  26. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:41 pm:

    ===the last time a Chicago-area democrat lost to a primary challenger===

It’s happened a lot in Latino districts.

  27. - 42nd - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:45 pm:

    ===It’s happened a lot in Latino districts.===

    In the last 10-15 years?

  28. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 4:53 pm:

    ===In the last 10-15 years?===

    Will Guzzardi?

    Hmm.

  29. - Well Actually - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 5:00 pm:

“Someone tell me the last time a Chicago-area democrat lost to a primary challenger in congressional or general assembly race.”

Theresa Mah, Ameya Pawar, Will Guzzardi, Sue Garza, Carol Ammons, all fought the law and won.

  30. - Politix - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 5:14 pm:

Although Latinos are overwhelmingly Catholic, there’s been plenty of research on the voting trends of Latinos. Yes many are personally against abortion, but when it comes to legislation they normally support a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decision. Many of us actually know how to separate our religion with our policy (marriage equality, abortion, etc.)

  31. - Because I said so.... - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 5:40 pm:

=His district is very Catholic and Hispanic and Hispanics are also very Catholics. No brainer for him=

I am in his district and Catholic but do not and never have supported Lipinski. He was appointed because of his name and no other reason. Unfortunately, no one has mounted a credible campaign against him. I’m not sure Marie Newman will be successful but she has my vote.

Lipinski doesn’t support democratic ideology and it is way past his time to go.

  32. - Roman - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 7:23 pm:

Is it a “conservative Democratic” district? Yes, but that’s relative. It’s definitely more conservative than the other Chicago area Dem-held congressional districts, but it’s not as conservative as Cheri Bustos’s district.

The growing Latino and Arab populations aren’t really motivated to vote based on the abortion views of candidates, neither are the district’s mostly Catholic white voters — economic issues are paramount. It might be the most heavily unionized congressional district in the state.

And it is clearly a Democratic district — yukking it up with Donald Trump and Paul Ryan in the White House it’s not a good look.

  33. - From Bridgeview - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 8:54 pm:

Maybe my area isn’t conservative Democrats. But it certainly feels like it. I’ve lived for years on the northside (Lakeview). That felt liberal.
Here we have Union bumper stickers, lots of Church goers, lots of families, etc.. Lots of City workers near the Clearing neighborhood in Chicago. And Madigan’s district, which would be as loyally democratic as any.

==And for HRC in the general by 16.5==
Never said we’re not democratic here. The Bernie Sanders statistic sort of surprised me, but Sanders is really kind of a populist of sorts.

  34. - Roman - Thursday, Dec 21, 17 @ 11:47 pm:

    - From Bridgeview -

To your point, I know a few Bernie primary/Trump general voters who live in the 3rd CD.

  35. - Dave W - Friday, Dec 22, 17 @ 5:47 am:

How long are liberals going to be able to peddle the lie that the tax cuts bill is somehow a “tax hike” on “working families”? And when are responsible people in the media going to call them out on their BS?
