Question of the day
Tuesday, Mar 13, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller
* From ABC 7…
Ives also took a swipe at the two big money Democrats vying for the Democratic nomination, comparing them to Rauner.
“We already tried the millionaire, billionaire, no-government experience, no-political experience and I don’t think J.B. Pritzker sells to anybody. Same thing with Mr. Kennedy. He’s the same ilk,” she said.
Hmm. So she favors Sen. Biss?
* Sen. Biss didn’t return the favor on Bill Cameron’s show…
Cameron: And may the best man win.
Biss: And the next time perhaps, may the best woman win. Or even, how about this? Just the best person, who quite likely would be a woman.
Cameron: But that’s not to say you just endorsed Jeanne Ives.
Biss: I… have been planning to defeat Bruce Rauner in the general election, but I would be very committed to defeating Jeanne Ives in the general election as well.
* The Question: What would a fall campaign look like between Jeanne Ives and Daniel Biss?

Ugh, I read that and hear his voice in my head. So smarmy and patronizing, it makes me want to vomit.
A fall match up between Biss and Ives would be like holding a WWE match at the Newberry Library. Bughouse Square would never be the same.

Something about Biss’ comments in this exchange rings awkward. I think it’s the use of the words “next time,” which make it sound like he’s already conceded the race or, were he to win the general, endorsed his opponent in 2022 by virtue of gender.

Showtime - “Lefty/Righty” - Pilot
Daniel a left-leaning Democrat wins the nomination of his party for Governor, finds out about his win on stage with *Special Guest* Pussy Riot in Dublin, Ireland. Jeanne, a right-leaning Republican wins the nomination of her party for Governor, has the wait for the “Daughters of Confederacy” to end their pot-luck and square dance social to take the stage to accept. Daniel has *Special Guest* Jesse Eisenberg accept the nomination for him, now people want Jesse Eisenberg instead. Jeanne asks why Daniel is at a violent protest for cats, gives remarks about the good cats bring. Diana and Bruce make a pile of costumes, set them ablaze, say nothing. Comedy, 58 minutes.

HIghlarity! Boy, the humorous exchanges between Biss and Ives would be side-splitting.
- Techie - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 3:50 pm:
It would be a pretty clear display of different ideologies from two candidates who have relevant experience in the state legislature. The campaign would be somewhat like Clinton vs. Trump, except only in Illinois, and only after Americans have had a chance to see just how bad the far right can be when in power.
- Soothsayer - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 3:52 pm:
If so much were not on the line I think a Biss v. Ives smackdown would be kind of awesome. That might be my favorite match-up if unintentional comedy is the ultimate goal.

I love this premise.
- Veil of Ignorance - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 4:13 pm:
Putting aside folks’ stylistic critiques, I do think Ives puts forward a more consistent and policy specific framework than Rauner that represents where many hardline conservatives are at right now. Likewise, Biss’ economic and policy content largely does the same for the other side. It’s the Pritzker-Rauner showdown that would be fairly devoid of real substantive policy debate because it’ll get drowned out by negative ads and risk averse campaigns.

Why? Madigan had Biss in charge of a PAC not too long ago. They would get along just fine.
==Two people running toward the middle…==
Biss, yes.
Ives? Seriously? I cannot imagine Ives moving even an inch toward the middle.

- Anon - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 5:50 pm:
They’d both try for the middle. Biss would have an easier time given some of the attacks on him from the left. Ives would be a disaster.
- blue dog dem - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 5:55 pm:
Pot. You mean Biss is going to move to the middle on abortion,LGBT, charter schools, private school scholarships, negotiating union contracts. Or do you mean he would move to the middle by lowering income tax rates. Or do you mean he will move to the middle on K-12 funding
. Or do you mean he will move to the middle on a progressive tax ? Just wondering where the middle is.

Would like to see an Ives vs. Kennedy or Biss General Election, but looking realistically at the match-up Rauner v. Pritzker…Who wins by a bigger margin next Tuesday? Pritzker vs. the rest or Rauner v. Ives?
For much of this campaign I’d say Rauner wins by more than Pritzker…but as of today, I’m not so sure.

A clear choice between two sincere candidates.
- Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 7:03 pm:
bdd: Not sure where the “middle” is on abortion and LGBT issues, but Biss it wouldn’t be surprising to see him move toward the middle on charter schools, private school scholarships, negotiating union contracts, tax rates, school funding, and lots of other issues. He portrays himself as a Bernie leftie now, but his history is much more pragmatic. (Look at how fast he switched his LG partner last fall.)
- Streamwood Retiree - Tuesday, Mar 13, 18 @ 7:11 pm:
In Biss vs Ives, I’d vote for Ives. Not because I support her social agenda. I don’t. But she strikes me as honest while Biss is as phony as a three dollar bill, Confederate! Kennedy v Ives: I don’t know. Kennedy v Rauner, Kennedy. Biss v Rauner, Rauner. Honestly, Biss v Satan, Satan.
I dropped a lot for Kennedy when he said he would tax retirement income. he says for millionaires. That’s how it starts. The next thing you know Obama has working stiffs like me paying on 85% of our Social security.
So far Pritzker, Ives and Rauner are the only ones who don’t want to pick my pocket. I’ll take Pritzker over either Republican.

You know, I’ve been contemplating that match-up as well as a Quinn-Harold race for AG for the last two weeks. If that happens, I’ll agree with Rich that this would be the Strangest. Year. Ever.
