Adventures in campaigning

Tuesday, Mar 20, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Chris Kennedy did a fly-around yesterday. Nice jet

That event was in the Metro East.

* This is from the Bartonville airport near Peoria

“I think it’s incredible to be here in Rockford. This, at the University of Illinois, er, in Peoria. I think it’s incredible to be here in Peoria because the University of Illinois has a medical school here. I think education-driven economic development is critical to the future of our state,” Chris Kennedy said.

Things happen. What’s your favorite story like this?

I cut anyone slack 72 hours before an election. Everyplace looks the same. “Fatigue makes cowards of us all”.

There’s a terrific Winthrop Rockefeller story from years back during a whistle stop tour in Ave, Oklahoma…

I still like when Rauner was sworn in and put his right hand on the bible and raised his left. Totally botched it.

Jack Kemp running for president in the Iowa caucuses.

At an event in Davenport, he kept referring to the “great people here on Rock Island” and how he needed them to come out on caucus night (in his defense, he had just toured the arsenal).

Around the same time Gary Hart completely blanking on where he was. “It’s great to be here in (very long pause)…..it’s great to be here.”

  5. - Stand Tall - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 10:25 am:

On the campaign trail in Beaverton, Oregon, in May 2008, an obviously tired Barack Obama mistakenly told a crowd that over the course of the long campaign he had been to fifty-seven states in the U.S., with one left to go:

    Every day’s an endless stream
    Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me
    The movies and the factories
And every stranger’s face I see
Remind me that I long to be

    Homeward bound

I can’t remember a similar anecdote because. . . that plane! I remember gubernatorial candidates using single engine props to get around.

In the 70’s, Jim Thompson mistakenly walked into the Calumet Township Democrats meeting and gave a rousing campaign speech, thinking he was talking to the Township’s Republican organization.

Are you sure it was a mistake? That guy loved to campaign and would go anywhere.

When you’re riding sixteen hours and there’s nothing much to do
And you don’t feel much like riding, you just wish the trip was through

  15. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 11:03 am:

Thompson’s campaigning before the Calumet Township Democrats was a mistake. The Republicans and Democrats were meeting at the same time in different parts of a Catholic school’s buildings. Thompson wandered into the wrong room and started addressing his “Fellow Republicans.” The Dems, enjoying the fun, didn’t let on until Thompson finished. To Thompson’s credit, he almost doubled over laughing when finally told where he was. Royko wrote a piece about it.

Both Rockford and Peoria have UI Medical campuses, so this feel like an honest mistake from a guy who is really running on the back of his BoT experience.

According to the FAA, aircraft N93VR (as seen in the picture) is a Cessna 550 registered to ECJ Bravo 2004 LLC, with the same registration address as SOLIC Capital, which linkedin reports Mr. Kennedy is an Advisor.

No real point…I just love how much info is readily available on the web.

==Thompson’s campaigning before the Calumet Township Democrats was a mistake. ==

    Nope.

This from the Blue Island Sun Standard of February 1, 1976:

    “Thompson visit dispute settled

“Diehard Republicans and Democrats would do well to put more distance between their gathering spots next time a headline politico is brought to town. A week ago last Tuesday night Republican gubernatorial candidate James R. Thompson graced the Calumet Township regular Republicans with an appearance at St. Isidore’s school hall, 12731 Wood St. At the same time the regular Calumet Township Democrats were holding their monthly third Tuesday meeting across the street. ‘ It seems Thompson could not resist what turned out to be an opportunity to shake hands with voters of either political stripe, but his friendship mission to the other side of the street stirred a confusion which quickly mushroomed into a prominent place in the Chicago Daily News. Columnist Mike Royko put the gaff to Big Jim by quoting one of the local Dems, who said Thompson appeared to walk into the opposition camp unknowingly and began speaking to the group, then left when he realized where he stood. One Democrat even told the Sun-Standard that Thompson recouped before leaving by asking the group to vote for Michael Hewlett rather than Gov. Dan Walker in the primaries. Yet Thompson sought to right what he obviously thought was an unfair portrayal of himself as somewhat of an oaf. In a letter which Royko ran last Wednesday, Thompson said he knew where he was when he met the Dems, that one of them had in fact invited him to step in after his GOP appearance, and that the so-called speech was ‘-’baloney”: it never happened. The former U.S. District Attorney’s case has been confirmed by the Sun- Standard, except for one unchecked item. What about this Vote for Howlett plug?”
