Question of the day

* The governor and Mrs. Rauner moved back into the governor’s mansion today…

* The Question: In your opinion, how is this privately funded renovation “a metaphor for Illinois”?

  1. - anon2 - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:47 am:

Privately funded schools replacing public schools.
Privately funded charity replacing government programs.
Privately funded environmental programs to replace government regulation.
    The Rauner dream for Illinois

  2. - Chris Widger - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:52 am:

The Governor is staring at a blank wall, just as our future is a blank canvas. No matter how many millions are spent on the election or on these renovations, what’s written on that canvas is our choice and our responsibility. The Democrats and Republicans only have the power we give them over the coming years–no more, no less.

  3. - Saluki - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:53 am:

You always clean up and fix probably with a rental when new tenets are moving in soon.

  4. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:53 am:

The mansion has been restored to its glory after decades of neglect after 3 1/2 years of drastic change and hard work

The state is not fixed, because for the past 3 1/2 years Democrats have resisted changing Illinois after decades of neglect to our business and competitive environment

  5. - Saluki - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:53 am:

    *problems

  6. - Carhartt Union Negotiating Team - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:55 am:

Wonder if the Rauner’s will get their security deposit back when they move in January.

  7. - DuPage Saint - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:55 am:

When Rauner stays away things get done

  8. - Henry Francis - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 11:59 am:

When the Guv reaches out to fellow ultra-rich folks and asks. them to pay more to help the state, wonderful things happen.

When the Guv asks those closer to the bottom of the economic scale to pay more to help the state, non-wonderful things happen.

  9. - Anonymous - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

    Didn’t he veto that?

  10. - don the legend - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

New back porch = new illegal deals.

  11. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:05 pm:

The governor in that mansion couldn’t govern the state or unite it, so he went around the government he failed to lead and did what he knew - deal with private wealthy people who also couldn’t govern.

“If we can unite on a plan to fix it”, is the worse thing for a leader to say. Those aren’t leading words, those aren’t words a governor should say. Rauner doesn’t know the job at all.

  12. - @misterjayem - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:06 pm:

“This renovation is a metaphor for Illinois.”

The people hired to do the renovation didn’t waste three and a half years blaming Madigan for their difficulties at work.

The people hired to do the renovation didn’t refuse to do their job until unrelated “Turnaround Agenda” items took effect.

The people hired to do the renovation didn’t change into multiple costumes. Every day, they dressed for their jobs and did the work.

Yeah, this renovation is a metaphor for Illinois.

    – MrJM

  13. - Annonin' - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:07 pm:

metaphor? Guessin’ GovJunk does not understand the meanin’ of the word
But could be stretched to compare to imposin’ a progressive tax that the megarich willingly shell out. But we guess they will expect a big bash as their “reward”
Guess we are supposed to forget he was gonna pay for this himself.

  14. - Name Withheld - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:11 pm:

It means we need to kick the Governor out for 3-4 years while people who know what they are doing get things fixed.

  15. - PublicServant - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:12 pm:

So into this dimmer room which we call the Rauner Agenda.

  16. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:15 pm:

I hope one day we can get our government to reimburse these people so that we can own our governor’s mansion again.

  17. - Sue - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:18 pm:

Just in time for JB to yank out the toilets

  18. - Stuff Happens - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:19 pm:

Work is progressing just fine, “even” with union workers. Sounds like a strong lesson to me.

  19. - Anonymous - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:29 pm:

Wonder if they bother to unpack?

  20. - crazybleedingheart - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

The Governor surveys an empty shell few care about, congratulating himself on his success in leveraging wealth to create a facade of significance, weightiness, and authority that does nothing to ease the struggle of the average person.

It’s not a metaphor for Illinois, as much as it’s a metaphor for his entire political hobby.

If only he’d gotten into Lionel trains instead, he could’ve played out all his hot Taggart/Rearden fantasies without the collateral damage.

  21. - College Anon - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

Bruce, to himself. Wow, this is what a job well done looks like.

  22. - Leigh John-Ella - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:46 pm:

I assumed the metaphor was the Gov’s wedgie, because we are still stuck with him.

  23. - Flynn's Mom - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 12:51 pm:

It doesn’t matter where or when his picture is taken, he always seems lost and unsure of himself.

  24. - Boone's is Back - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 1:09 pm:

It’s a metaphor for IL in that only billionaires will be living in that mansion for the foreseeable future.

  25. - Ahoy! - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 1:13 pm:

We can’t wait for the state government to fix anything but we can when they simply get out of the way.

  26. - Blago's Hare - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 1:18 pm:

    MrJM-
    Spot on, as usual. Lol.

  27. - Jibba - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 1:25 pm:

    >

But LP, the gov left fixing the mansion roof to the roofing experts. He sadly should have done the same for the economy, since his proposed fixes wouldn’t have worked, and what he managed to do was counterproductive. The roof would still be leaking if he had gone up on the ladder and started bossing around the roofers.

  28. - I Miss Bentohs - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 1:40 pm:

Actually, say all the bad about the Governor you want but I am thankful to him for acknowledging Springfield exists (and Chicago is not the capitol) and for restoring the people’s house.

  29. - DeseDemDose - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 1:46 pm:

Rauner brags about governor mansion rehab funded by his rich cohorts. Hey Governor, should have put some effort at Quncy VA home and saved some lives.

  30. - Sugar Corn - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:14 pm:

    Misplaced priority #1,355.

Even in the little city of Springfield - there are dozens more local improvements that deserve resources and attention (a big one: the State Armory).

Instead of turning attention to those in need, Bruce Rauner and his very rich friends helped themselves.

    #BestTeamInAmerica

  31. - Montrose - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:18 pm:

In Rauner’s mind, this is how government works - go it alone and you get things done.

  32. - Streator Curmudgeon - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:19 pm:

The 1% need a tax deduction, so they donate to the renovation of the Governor’s mansion.

The metaphor for Illinois is that if you’re rich, you make out okay. For the rest of us, not so much.

  33. - Sugar Corn - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:19 pm:

Will the donor list be made public?

Isn’t the claim that NO public funds were used on this false? I understand CDB and other agencies have been working on it. That ain’t free.

  34. - d.p.gumby - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:20 pm:

The metaphor–even the incompetent can do something right on rare occasions.

  35. - Anon - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:27 pm:

I was kind of expecting there to be a historic renovation.

That looks like some relatively cheap flooring thrown over the existing flooring — which you know, is probably pretty nice hard wood given the date of construction and who built it — along with a thick coat of paint over wood that should have been stripped and then refinished with a stain or something that doesn’t scream “this looks like the inside of a McMansion, not the Governor’s Mansion.”

  36. - wordslinger - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:38 pm:

People can get real work done when Rauner isn’t around.

  37. - Anonymous - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:55 pm:

Matter of priorities. Apparently fixing up his own house was more important that fixing up our veterans home.

  38. - wordslinger - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:57 pm:

–Matter of priorities. Apparently fixing up his own house was more important that fixing up our veterans home.–

And that ain’t no metaphor, that’s for real.

  39. - 47th Ward - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:58 pm:

===People can get real work done when Rauner isn’t around.===

    Winner winner, chicken dinner.

  40. - Ok - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 2:58 pm:

It looks like a bland new condo ready to be decorated with Pottery Barn?

  41. - James Knell - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 3:12 pm:

I can’t say it any better than misterjayem and anon2 did.

  42. - Lefty Lefty - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 4:14 pm:

The renovation is a metaphor for Illinois. The wealthy will pay for what they feel is important–high local property taxes for their kids’ schools, a seat of power or a direct connection to a pal who bought one, luxury automobiles, 3-6 homes, and their pal’s pet project in Springfield.

They will not pay for the fundamentals of a functioning state–a progressive tax system, a transaction tax, a reliable public transit system, clean water and air.

  43. - A guy - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 4:49 pm:

If it can be fixed with money, he’s your guy.

  44. - Mama - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 5:22 pm:

“If it can be fixed with money, he’s your guy. ”

If what you say is true, why is his budgets out of balanced by counting on revenues that don’t exist?

  45. - Rabid - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 6:43 pm:

You can hardy see his tail

  46. - Rabid - Monday, May 21, 18 @ 6:49 pm:

    Privately funded privately owend

  47. - Anonymous - Tuesday, May 22, 18 @ 12:32 am:

“And the porch is now perfectly feng-shui’d for deal-making with visitors.”

  48. - Rabid - Tuesday, May 22, 18 @ 8:24 am:

Renovation metaphor, I have whitewashed the mansion like Illinois
