Pritzker’s new ad focuses on the governor’s recent comments about downstate Illinois. Rauner can be heard in an interview talking about “how difficult” it is to keep businesses in southern Illinois. His comments have irked residents there, and Pritzker’s taking note.
Announcer: What does Bruce Rauner really think of Downstate Illinois? Listen to him talk about our area and our workers during a recent Chicago radio interview:
Rauner: “Champaign-Urbana is wonderful. But it’s very hard to keep a company of more than six people there. There’s no convenient transportation, not much of a workforce, and it’s very hard”
Mark Maxwell on-air: “As you might imagine, folks around here weren’t too thrilled with those remarks.”
Announcer: Bruce Rauner - Four years of failure is enough.
…Adding… Heh…
Not only did Dave Dahl offer free training in how to deliver a proper apology today, he also made @WCIA3Mark blush. I almost fell off the couch laughing. @bschoenburgpic.twitter.com/w4xp7qWU6T
C+/B- I feel it would have better if it just focused on the “not much of a workforce” bit. Using the entire paragraph makes it a lot less hard hitting. The angle is good but the execution needs work.
It’s been playing a lot in Central Illinois, but it needs a bit more umph. When Mark talks about people down here aren’t happy, those people need to be showcased/quoted in the ad. It was a backhanded apology tour, and that needs to be emphasized.
It tends to show how clueless he is CU is at an Interstate Junction and a major rail line. Most live in Urban areas. His comments sound like he is talking about tiny rural towns….Also Politico isvequating downstate and souther Illinois again.
And even some of our rural towns have good transportation….but the rest is mostly the case. But that is even offset with low commercial real estate costs.
Another tepid effort from JB’s media team. The Rauner audio goes on too long. Why use the “Champaign-Urbana is wonderful” portion of the quote? It contradicts the message.
They need to take this quote and combine it with other perceived downstate grievances: a half a billion cash for a U of I program in Chicago, downstate social service agencies closed, layoffs on college campuses, the state not paying downstate businesses’ bills, etc.
The “fail” meme is failing. It had some potential but this ad is weak. I thought the campaign would get there sooner or later, but until they hone in on how he specifically failed as governor –and more importantly how that failure specifically affects a large segment of voters– JB’s going to keep treading in expensive water with the “Rauner Failed” bit. Grade C-
I try to rate ads objectively. “Rauner failed” is a thing here, but I don’t hear it mentioned as a working theme much elsewhere. It matters not to me whether you think the ad is hunky dory as it is, Arsenal, or if you are open to ways the ad might be improved. It’s your campaign and your business. I am merely grading it as one interested observer and your arguing about the ad’s effectiveness with me is silly.
An ad (or series of ads) is ultimately known to be effective only after they’ve been shown to move voters. In the meantime Mr. Miller posts ads and asks his viewers to grade them. You have noticed, I imagine, that quite a few other astute commenters today besides me graded this specific ad midrange, offered criticisms of this ad, and put forth various suggestions for improving the next ad if JB decides to continue following this theme.

Why would you run the “Champaign-Urbana is wonderful” part? It’s a campaign ad. Terrible.

I think the full context, with Rauner speaking, is most effective. It’s clear he finds C-U, and by extension, Downstate, pitiful.

C quality.

What Roman said above.
weak effort, disjointed
no link of downstate insult with “failure” theme

I’m glad she liked Dave Dahl on the show as I do like him but……
His showing up in that attire and sounding like a grumpy old man was not worthy of a return invite.

==The “fail” meme is failing.==
The fact that “Rauner Failed” has been repeated enough to classify it a “meme” is basically every bit of success Team JB wanted.

Yeah, you’ve got an objective in mind alright.
== “Rauner failed” is a thing here, but I don’t hear it mentioned as a working theme much elsewhere.==
You *just* called it a meme.
== It matters not to me==
Then why did you respond to me?
==It’s your campaign and your business.==
It’s not my campaign, I’m just a guy yakking on the internet.
==I am merely grading it as one interested observer and your arguing about the ad’s effectiveness with me is silly.==
I guess you’re going to have to go use that other internet where no one ever disagrees with you, then.

And yet, you’re already declaring a series of ads as “failing”…

That’s cool for them and I hope they enjoyed themselves, but it has nothing to do with the conversation between you and me.

Get a grip, Arsenal. He rated an ad. You didn’t agree. Fine.
