Gov. Rauner’s re-election campaign is launching a new — yet old — line of attack against Pritzker.
After weeks of ads mocking Pritzker for a property tax reduction he received on a neighboring Gold Coast mansion he bought and had the toilets disconnected to declare the residence uninhabitable, the new Rauner ad uses the words of Pritzker’s defeated March Democratic primary challengers to criticize the billionaire and try to link him to Speaker Madigan.
Rauner has long sought to demonize Madigan and tie Democratic candidates up and down the ballot to the veteran House speaker, who also chairs the state Democratic Party. The ad ends declaring Pritzker as “Mike Madigan’s candidate.”
The Rauner folks ran a very similar digital ad right after the primary.
Daniel Biss: JB Pritzker is Mike Madigan’s candidate. Everyone knows it, it’s clear, and if the Democratic Party wants to nominate Mike Madigan’s candidate, they should nominate JB Pritzker.
Chris Kennedy: I think JB Pritkzer has emerged as the poster child for pay to play politics in this state.
Biss: It took JB Pritzker a week to get permission from Mike Madigan to even name him in talking about the sexual harassment cover up.
Kennedy: Pritzker is really there to protect the status quo.
Actually, the primary election results clearly showed that JB is who the people wanted as the Democratic candidate. Rauner, meanwhile just pretty much squeaked by in the Republican side.
Biss and Kennedy were after votes, and the “Madigan Candidate” was a talking point. They have since endorsed JB, but Ives hasn’t reciprocated with Rauner.
Rate: C- for lack of full and up-to-date citations;)
We’re passed the Democratic Primaries now. So the name recognition for Biss falls off. Still, the repetition of Mike Madigan’s candidate is effective. But Rauner’s attacks on Madigan didn’t really get him too far. C+ because it is nothing new…
Wow! We have some biased individuals this AM. This is still Illinois and people still dislike Madigan. It is a solid B+. Anyone who thinks it’s not gonna hurt just has their head in the sand. Can JB run a similar ad? Yes. Doesn’t mean this one isn’t good.
OK by all account GovJunk continues to be losin’ so we guess it is fittin’ that he invests in two losers to boost his campaign. Who is drivin’ the GovJunk clown car these days?
Constantly crying “Madigan” only serves as a remind that Rauner is incapable of working with the man or anyone else that doesn’t capitulate to his agenda. Rauner’s initial appeal was that he would be able to overcome any Madigan or Dem resistance. After 4 years that’s obviously not the case.
Ads with the folks who lost the primary are almost universally lame. Maybe the Ives one (you know it’s a-coming) will have a bit more punch ’cause SHE has a bit more punch, but I doubt it. Generally speaking, if these guys had more credibility with the voters than the ones who won the primary…the result would have been different.
Always effective to use the attacks from the candidate’s primary opponents against him in the general. This is low hanging fruit. JB will have the chance to do the same. I hope his media folks handle that material more effectively than they used Rauner’s Champaign-Urbana screw up.
This is a reinforcement ad. It will not attract many new voters for Rauner but it does effectively reinforce all those voters across Illinois who dislike Madigan’s powerful role and longevity within Illinois politics. This ad’s for them and some of those voters are bound to be Democrats. Grade B.

Its a good ad, however, the Ives quotes about Rauner cut more deeply than Biss or Kennedy quotes about JB.

Third-party statements are always good. I imagine Pritzker will trot out Ives for a “Bruce Rauner lied” spot.
Actually, there’s a lot of third-party testimonials in the public domain for a “Bruce Rauner lied” spot.

Yawn. The question is just how big Rauner’s double digit loss is going to be. That’s it.

It works. How well? Remains to be seen. But it’s effectively executed.

B To the point, no BS.
What remains to be seen is impact of “Madigan” on governor’s race

If electing munger and JB not winning the primary because of madigan was their plan, it failed
