    What’s his position on:
    1. Pelosi’s speakership
    2. Impeaching Trump
    3. Eliminating ICE

These seem to be the big items in the news for the Democrat party. Would love to know his positions.

  2. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 10:40 am:

    Sheer genius

  3. - Saluki - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 10:46 am:

The Dems finally figured out that the 12th Congressional District isn’t downtown Chicago.

  4. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 10:46 am:

I love ad names. It’s like someone reaches into a hat picks a strong noun or verb at random.

  5. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 10:53 am:

Not sure what to think of this, as I don’t know that area enough to know how folks will respond to the idea of a guy walking through a church for a political commercial. Hits me odd.

“I fought the pharmas because ‘they started the opioid epidemic’”

They certainly share plenty of blame, but “they started it”??? That’s a little heavy.

It may be an excellent ad depending on the territory, because the guy seems likable and decent. He’s a Dem, so displaying his faith so openly may intercept some R leaning support. But, the inside of a church is heavy to me. Too heavy. I’m actually a little surprised the church was ok with it.

  6. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 10:58 am:

The problem for the Dems in the 12th is that it is heavy on the conservative side these days. Radically shifted in the last five years

  7. - Montrose - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:02 am:

As A Guy said, I would be curious how well walking through church plays with folks in southern Illinois. It strikes me as a little too much. I get why he is doing it and think he is right to play up his Christian faith, but I am not sure this is the right tactic.

  8. - ugh - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:03 am:

This is a pretty good intro.

  9. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:08 am:

== curious how well walking through church plays with folks in southern Illinois. ==

Southern Illinois is getting into the Bible Belt. This ad will probably play OK there.

It is a good ad for a D in a conservative district. Downstate pols have to be more middle of the road than radically left or right.

  10. - SOIL M - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:10 am:

Have to admit it is a good ad. As BDD pointed out it is a conservative district, and not all of them are Republican. This could pull conservative and moderate Dems as well as independents.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:12 am:

    It’s a solid “B”

It’s a nice intro, the way it’s shot is fine, the church probably speaks to that district better than trying to think if it does or doesn’t.

It’s a “B” to doing what needs to be done, simple and straightforward and trying to be a good indication of what people in the 12th want.

  12. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:13 am:

He won’t be considered a conservative until he pledges support for a Roe v Wade overturn and a pledge to not ban semi autos. Just saying.

  13. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:29 am:

He’s in a church, but he’s not telling me the truth.

    That’ what I see.

  14. - west wing - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:34 am:

    Good TV. Good message.

Only for those who choose to remain willfully ignorant of years of undisputed revelations in court cases and great journalism.

They invented it, aggressively marketed it and knowing lied about its abuse and highly addictive nature.

Maybe you want to check in with all those suburban Chicago GOP state’s attorneys and GOP state attorney generals around the country who are suing Big Pharma for just that.

I wonder if Brendan supports Trumps position on tariffs? Especially if he’s in Granite.

  17. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 11:56 am:

You don’t have to be a conservative to be pro-life. I lean left on most issues but am also pro-life. I am not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination sand if it wasn’t for the Abortion issue would be considered left wing.

    Maybe it’s a set, lol.

Wordslinger with the knockout of A guy.

As usual, WS says what I am thinking faster that I can even start posting a comment.

  20. - Responsa - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 12:16 pm:

Wow. Seemingly as an afterthought he added on- screen print that states he won’t support Nancy Pelosi for leader but did not say so out loud so people listening only (not viewing) will miss that.

I give it a B. He seems smart and nice and like he is more in tune with his district than some Dem challengers in the past have been. Like others here, though, I think the stroll among the church pews is kind of questionable.

  21. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 12:30 pm:

===so people listening only (not viewing) will miss that===

As I’ve said many times before, infinitely more people watch TV ads than listen to them.

  22. - Wheres Bost - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 12:42 pm:

Wasn’t he in DC and Chicago for fundraisers with Pelosi? Wheres the Bost people at? Should be pouncing.

  23. - the Patriot - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 12:56 pm:

Do not like use of the church for a political ad.

Won’t back Pelosi or will not vote for her. Two different things. Also very dangerous. Campaign against her and she becomes Speaker and your district is SOL.

The little lie democrat prosecutors won’t tell is the largest single purchaser of opioids is Medicaid.

If Democrats would agree to tighten regulations on Medicaid problem solved, but democrats will never agree to cut medicaid. They would rather keep people hooked on pills and entitlements.

  24. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 1:06 pm:

===The little lie democrat prosecutors won’t tell is the largest single purchaser of opioids is Medicaid.===

Moronic. There is so much wrong with this comment that I wouldn’t know where to begin.

Yes, let’s cut Medicaid. Great solution. Freaking genius.

Seriously, are the comments getting dumber here lately?

  25. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 1:19 pm:

== If Democrats would agree to tighten regulations on Medicaid problem solved ==

The problem there is the one size fits all solutions they come up with, such as limiting ng the number of prescriptions and making it almost impossible for the people who actually need more. There has to be a middle ground between the all or nothing approaches.

  26. - Saluki beancounter - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 1:48 pm:

As a born, bred and educated Southern Illinoisan (who reads the NY Times), I think this ad is great. It will play well in heavily Catholic Metroeast, as well as the more rural regions. With a name like Kelley, Notre Dame undergrad and Navy vet what more could you ask for?

  27. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 1:58 pm:

    ==Wordslinger with the knockout of A guy.==

d the l, he offered his view, which isn’t very far from my own really.

I’m not naive to Pharma’s fault in the Opioid epidemic at all. I’m also not naive to the fact that Pharma has created live saving drugs as well. I just feel this candidate may have overstepped by saying they “started it”.
Maybe worse than starting it, they fed the beast. That’s worth suing over.

  28. - Downstate Illinois - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 2:36 pm:

Yet he still wants to gut the First Amendment and allow Congress to regulate political speech. So far he hasn’t said how much of his party’s agenda to gut the Second Amendment he supports.

  29. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 2:57 pm:

–I just feel this candidate may have overstepped by saying they “started it”–

So who else “started it,” besides the ones that invented it, marketed it, sold it, and lied about it?

  30. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 3:09 pm:

==So who else “started it,” besides the ones that invented it, marketed it, sold it, and lied about it?==

C’mon dude. These were invented for pain management. I’m not sure the intention was for people to get uncontrollably addicted to them or to move them illegally through market chains to people who didn’t need them after painful or traumatic procedures.

Maybe they did and you were there to see their real intent.

  31. - don the legend - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 3:14 pm:

    A guy.
Perhaps Big Tobacco only wanted the folks to enjoy one satisfying cigarette at the end of a long day.

  32. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 3:16 pm:

===Maybe they did and you were there to see their real intent.===

Another helpless genius spouting off instead of doing the tiniest bit of homework.

A 10 second search on Google reveals more than 6,000 scholarly articles on various aspects of the opioid addiction crisis. Do some homework, your opinions will benefit.

Horrible ad. Going to lose by 10 points if he keeps that up.

==He’s in a church, but he’s not telling me the truth.==
    Which thing wasn’t the truth?

  35. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 4:41 pm:

–C’mon dude. These were invented for pain management.–

No. The concept of “chronic pain management” was invented by Purdue Pharma-funded physicians to market oxy.

What else don’t you want to know on the subject?

  36. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 9:55 pm:

15 years ago, oxy helped me through a particularly rough medical time of my life. I was very much informed of the addictive nature of the different body’s by my doctor’s and pharmacists. I wonder where it all went wrong.

===I wonder if Brendan supports Trumps position on tariffs? Especially if he’s in Granite.===

I bet there are far more farmers in the 12th district than are employed by that plant in Granite.

  38. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 10:53 pm:

    – I wonder where it all went wrong.–

Why don’t you ask somebody to read a book to you or something.

  39. - BlueDogDem - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 8:53 am:

GCS. Agree. But Brendan needs to differentiate himself from fence straddling Bost.

  40. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Jul 19, 18 @ 4:42 pm:

I don’t mind a church as a backdrop. It’s soothing. An orgy would be too distracting and Tilt a Whirls were done already.
