* The ad

* Script

This is my town.

This was my school, left here to rot. A symbol of how Springfield forgets places
like this.

But we won’t be ignored.

For five years, we fought for fair funding for our kids, and we won.

I’ll keep fighting the tough fights, because our kids deserve a fair shot too.

* He’s also been buying up billboard space in the district with similar messages…

Very good ad, although he speaks just a bit too slowly in it. If he keeps this up, he’s going to be governor someday.

===…although he speaks just a bit too slowly in it.===

    That’s the only blemish.

    It’s like a 45 record being spun as a 33…

Coulda went another paragraph of reinforcement, if it’s a timing thing… but it’s a solid effort.

This is the kind of kitchen-table, bread-and-butter approach that Democrats need to take–and not get distracted by the sideshows. Well done.

    Fought. Fighting. Fights.

    Always works.

  5. - IllinoisBoi - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 1:53 pm:

This ad is an examplar for downstate Democrats running for office. I wish Manar was running for governor instead of JB.

  6. - Christopher - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 1:56 pm:

Some may think he speaks slowly, but he speaks clearly and unambiguously. I think it’s a refreshing change from what passes for campaign spots nowadays. This is positive and admirable.

Good ad but ===A symbol of how Springfield forgets places like this.===

Maybe State Government forgets, maybe Governor Rauner forgets, maybe the Legislature forgets but I don’t see how the City of Springfield forgets places like this.

Springfield is a nice city. It doesn’t have anything to do with Litchfield schools. /an ever so slight touch of snark

  9. - Anon - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 2:39 pm:

Super slick. Super well made. Probably cost a pretty penny.

I wish he would fight the tough fight of fixing the local government he left behind in Macoupin. It’s a nepotimistic circus and it has his fingers all over it.

Point being, if you look past image, he’s not much better than the rest of the politicians. He’s just smart in cultivating an image and working the political system.

  10. - Native Voice - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 2:40 pm:

Best ad so far this cycle. Manar gets more conservative support than any democrat I’ve ever seen. And it is not because he’s a conservative. He is not and everyone in his district knows it. I think it’s because he meets all voters on their terms and actually attempts to bring them on board. Too many candidates just write off too many voters. This ad is about something real and it will resonate with all political stripes. More like this Democrats!

  11. - Wow - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 2:44 pm:

Senate R’s will not have enough money to compete in this race.

  12. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 2:50 pm:

The amount of Botox used by Andy in the billboard photo is quite impressive.

  13. - Taylorville 2 - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 2:50 pm:

Andy’s opponent keeps digging holes and dropping bombs. It’s fun to watch Seth McMillan choke on his own words every time he opens his mouth. If Rauner invests money in this race, it will be money wasted.

  14. - Saluki - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 3:00 pm:

Wonder if Andy called the Bunker Hill Code Enforcement Officer about all those broken windows in the old School? Nah, at least not until we get this commercial filmed!

    ===Bunker Hill Code Enforcement Officer===

Population 1,801. Not sure they even have one.

You must not be from downstate. Abandoned school buildings with broken windows are everywhere. It is sad but that’s why this ad is a home run. It will resonate with everyone. And Manar is the guy from a small town that did something about it.

  19. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 3:20 pm:

Not in his district, but his ads pop up on our cable system. They are at least watchable and easy to understand/remember.

  20. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 3:21 pm:

Add in that he working his butt off-he is everywhere, every parade, every local fair or festival, every Lion’s Club meeting. He isn’t taking anything for granted. Other incumbents need to look at what he is doing and emulate.

  21. - City Zen - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 3:38 pm:

“This was my school, left here to rot. A symbol of how Springfield forgets places like this.”

Springfield provides over 60% of education funding to Bunker Hill CUSD8. Add federal funds to that and you’re over 70%.

If only Springfield forgot my school district that much.

  22. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 3:50 pm:

That is a very good ad that will hit home to voters in his district wherever their home is.

–that guy took on an issue many deemed to be career suicide - and succeeded. he’s anything but the norm.

Zero snark here, I’m confused. That’s the first I’ve heard of promoting oneself as an advocate for kids as potential career-suicide in political circles. Maybe I’m missing something -and happy to be educated- but from my small town perspective, I see a guy that has been running for office before he needed to shave, got in tight with the local power party (democrats) and went to work for the President of the Senate, Cullerton. You know, high-paying job - at least to us downstaters- before he got the blessing to run for office as State Senator. Now, I give him gumption for running around trying the help school kids, nothing wrong with that….but what was the worse that could have happened to him running out the gates as a fresh-faced State Senator by running around saying he wants to “Fix the School Formula”. Not much from my perspective but there are the outcomes as I see them.

    A) Nothing gets accomplished and there is no legislation passed but he can say he’s been trying real hard. The heartstring tug with the kids doesn’t mean you need to show results, it just means gotta convincingly look like your fighting for everyone’s kids.

    B) He gets a law passed that changes school funding and is probably going to help a lot of districts and probably going to hurt some other districts….doesn’t matter…because he can say worked for 5 long hard years getting something passed. And he is, boy is he.

I am sure that having Cullerton blessing to the be the school savior or martyr didn’t hurt anything either.

Now, I’m not 100% sure if I’m just to jaded seeing the Wizard up close or just to wary after being burned a few times thinking this guy really was what he claims to be. But my impression is that looking at the ‘fixes’ he put in place as an elected official in Macoupin, is that he’s more show than capable. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be so wary that this formula he “fixed”. I’ve seen some of the other “fixes” he “won” on behalf of us in Macoupin and well, let’s just hope that the kids got a better deal than we did.

–(sorry for the double post, didn’t have the above quote included.)

Happens to the best of us. No worries. :)

“This was my school, left here to rot. A symbol of how Springfield forgets places like this.”

Did the part of Springfield in his 48th Senate District (and Sue Scherer’s 96th Rep Dist.) get renamed something other than “Springfield?” His/Scherer’s district does include the Capitol Complex.

  25. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Aug 1, 18 @ 4:54 pm:

Good Ad. Almost makes you forget he’s been on the inside forever.

  26. - illini95 - Thursday, Aug 2, 18 @ 1:00 am:

As a kid born, raised and educated downstate, it’s sad we have to put any kids in front of another. Even worse when we brag about it. Lets put Illinois kids first.

  27. - Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 2, 18 @ 9:36 am:

I chuckled at his TV ad that stated he wants a property tax freeze. Sure you do Andy, about as much as MJM wants a freeze. Sheesh.
