You’re a sham and a charlatan! No, you’re a sham and a charlatan!

Tuesday, Aug 14, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* ABC 7

On Monday, Rauner found a new target in Republican third-party gubernatorial candidate State Senator Sam McCann.

“Every election is a battle, this guy McCann is a total plant, he’s a sham, he’s a charlatan, he was put on there by Madigan and Pritzker to try siphon votes away from me,” Rauner said. […]

“There is only one ’sham’ candidate in the race for governor, and that is Rauner himself. He is a charlatan. He has bought the Republican Party and hijacked state government,” McCann said. “His four years of lies and failure are the only proof needed to back up the statement.”

And it’s only August.

  1. - The Captain - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:47 pm:

Today Bruce Rauner got Sam McCann’s name on ABC 7 in Chicago because he couldn’t control himself, that was an unforced error.

  2. - Flat Bed Ford - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:49 pm:

In this argument I agree with Rauner. Sam is a sham. A profiteer. He is making money off the political process and is clearly nothing more than a rube.

  3. - I Miss Bentohs - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:53 pm:

The rare draw. They are both equally right.

  4. - Cubs in '16 - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:53 pm:

  5. - Charry - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:54 pm:

Sam, you have to be quicker on your feet. your purpose in this race is spoiler and court jester, I want to laugh more. come on. Go full Trump. call the Gov a dog or something.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:54 pm:

    ===…this guy…===

Disparaging McCann, meh. Rauner’s credibility is suspect.

===“There is only one ’sham’ candidate in the race for governor, and that is Rauner himself. He is a charlatan. He has bought the Republican Party and hijacked state government,” McCann said. “His four years of lies and failure are the only proof needed to back up the statement.”===

Rauner at 29%… people seem to have a similar thought?

  7. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:55 pm:

Every minute Rauner spends attacking the guy he leads by 18% is a minute he doesn’t spend attacking the guy who leads him by 13%.

  8. - Just saying - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:55 pm:

    Brucie siphons votes from Bruce

  9. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 3:55 pm:

===He is making money off the political process===

    Blind trust, broken trust?

  10. - Skeptic - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:02 pm:

Sam the Sham and the RINOS?
Sam the Sham and the Rauners?

  11. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:02 pm:

    Why’s he talking about McCann?

Maybe his own internals show McCann at 11%, too.

Simply put, Rauner can’t win if McCann gets 11%.

Rauner is just mad that BTIA(TM) didn’t get it together and create an Illinois Progressive Party with a Bernie-or-Bust type runnin’ for governor.

There was talk of it at the state central committee. They knew McCann was coming with this play; they just didn’t hustle to counter it.

That’s how you end up with Nazis and 9/11 Truthers as GOP nominees, too.

  12. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:03 pm:

A mountain of debt and an automatic Conservative Party slot in the 2022 gubernatorial election will be Bruce Rauner’s legacy in Illinois government.

Oh, and also Executive mansion renovations.

  13. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:05 pm:

Good on McCann for the quick counterattack—a lesson for the DPI and Pritzker campaign.

  14. - Cubs in '16 - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:07 pm:

===Sam the Sham and the Rauners?===

    ‘Wealthy Bully’

  15. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:17 pm:

    Lester Holt’s Mustache
Don’t forget a lifetime’s supply of state fair typos from the legacy list.

  16. - Bill F. - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:19 pm:

Wait, did the guy in the western shirt and Wrangler jeans put down his can of Stag to call someone …a charlatan?

    You’re breakin’ character, Governor.

  17. - RNUG - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:31 pm:

I figured part of the reason Sam got in the race was so he could dis the Gov using campaign speech.

  18. - Frank talks - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:43 pm:

You just validated Sam as a real candidate. If you’re talking about him it means he’s in your head, which means you’ve now put him in everyone else’s head.
An error that can’t be corrected because you’ve now shown the media you think he’s a real candidate. Which means they’ll start asking you questions to respond to you McCann.
    You’ve opened up your flank.
Will Breen side with you on your HB40 stance or McCann for his conservative values?
Will downstate side with you, after decimating their government jobs and resources, or the man from downstate who wants to make Southern Illinois Great Again?

  19. - slow down - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:45 pm:

It really is a win-win for McCann. Best case scenario (obviously extremely unlikely), he catches fire, raises money and somehow eeks out a win.

Worst case, he gets to be a thorn in Rauner’s side and potentially harm Rauner’s candidacy. Either way, I suspect McCann will be pleased.

  20. - Marie-Dorette Desjardins - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:48 pm:

Rauner like Trump is an over-entitled cry baby

  21. - Powdered Whig - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 4:59 pm:

Laughing that Charlatan was used as an insult in a political campaign in 2018.

  22. - West Side the Best Side - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 5:01 pm:

Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh exchange insults. Which one is the Wooly Bully?

  23. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 5:05 pm:

    Rich,
With apologies to Woody Allen, I believe Fielding Melish said it better than either of the two candidates: “This is a travesty. It’s a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.”

  24. - Boone's is Back - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 5:13 pm:

    Shmarlatan

  25. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 5:33 pm:

The reason I don’t support Rauner is because weeks into his new administration, he exposed himself as a charlatan and a scam in Decatur.

I haven’t decided what Sam is.

  26. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 5:49 pm:

    Charlatan?

What, is that a sneak peak at Rauner’s new “Southern Debutant” character?

What was he wearing? Did he have a kerchief and a fan waiving as he feigned a fainting spell”

    Landsakes ya’all.

This guy needs a new gig.

  27. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 5:55 pm:

JSM, lol. If that’s the case, we’ll know what it means when Rauner says of someone, “Aren’t you special.”

  28. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 6:06 pm:

@AA- Thanks and yes we will (exclamation point). If he exclaims “honey child” then we know he went full method actor.

  29. - Al - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 6:20 pm:

Republicans can be pro-choice or pro-life. But government taxpayer funded abortions is “a bridge too far.” Rauner turned away for a moment and has lost his base. They are disappointed in Illinois being a sanctuary State. There is a lack of enthusiasm and a feeling he has accomplished nothing good in the past four years. The base of the party he bought is no longer paying attention to what he says. His media buys have far less impact than four years ago because we have seen the advertised product in use and are dissatisfied with the result.

  30. - Governor Fielding Mellisch - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 6:33 pm:

McCann’s candidacy is a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.

  31. - West Side the Best Side - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 7:00 pm:

The war of words between Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh.

  32. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 7:29 pm:

==They are disappointed in Illinois being a sanctuary State.==
When did Illinois become a sanctuary state? You talking about the Trust Act?

  33. - Anon - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 7:53 pm:

My grandparents are voting for him. They have never voted for a dem and they HATE Rauner. McCann is a punch in the nose to Rauner.

  34. - Anon221 - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 8:08 pm:

Maybe Rauner just needs a Snickers…

  35. - Mama - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 8:08 pm:

The Republicans I have talked with have said they are glad Sam is running - - now they have someone they can vote for.

  36. - Bemused - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 8:10 pm:

I have talked to a few folks who have no use for either Billionaire. I could see Sam coming in second. Kind of a none of the above vote.

  37. - Trapped in the ‘burbs - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 8:15 pm:

    Rauner comes in 3rd.

  38. - A Jack - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 10:30 pm:

McCann was elected as a Republican four years before Rauner was elected.

So does Rauner have a looney conspiracy theory that Madigan put McCann into office four years before Rauner is elected Governor just so McCann could run against Rauner now?

  39. - Madigan madigan madigan - Tuesday, Aug 14, 18 @ 11:01 pm:

I want to see McCann do a 30 second commercial that just shows Rauner repeating “Madigan, Madigan, Madigan, Madigan, Madigan, Madigan, Madigan…” with a padded room as the background (probably not quite PC, is that?) Surely someone more creative then I could make that work.

  40. - @misterjayem - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 8:20 am:

Fellas… Fellas… There’s no need to fight. You’re both right.

    – MrJM

  41. - Anon - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 8:44 am:

This just shows how much Rauner is disconnected with central IL republicans….we’re sick of him
