* You know it’s been a pretty horrific season when your favorite team’s two biggest highlights are a nun’s outstanding ceremonial first pitch and tonight’s first big league game by a highly touted pitching prospect.

First, the nun. Sister Mary Jo Sobieck from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights

I was so impressed that I ordered her bobblehead.

* And now, the kid. Michael Kopech…

One of my guilty pleasures is watching horrible, mind-numbing reality shows on the Bravo network and as such… Michael Kopech will always be to me that guy who used to date the eldest daughter of Kim from “Real Housewives of Atlanta” and “Don’t Be Tardy…”

Here I thought it was Daniel Murphy Day in Chicagom

  3. - Stark - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:15 pm:

Let’s see if he can match the speed records that Jordan Hicks has already set this year alone with the Cardinals.

Daniel Murphy is great insurance for the post season and depending on what shakes out with Kris Bryant’s injury. Everyone would love to see the rookie Bote continue his great play and hot hitting in place of KB. Murphy is a seasoned veteran that will not crack under pressure. Good move by the Cubs.

Cardinals are playing .789 ball in the month of August.

  8. - Amalia - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:34 pm:

still on Abreu watch. at 22 HR and 76 RBI, will he get to 25/100? not a small accomplishment for his first 4 years so hoping he does it in the 5th to keep on the list with Pujols and DiMaggio.

  9. - Steve Rogers - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:35 pm:

Sister Sobiek’s first pitch was awesome. Too bad there were only 8 people there to see it.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:38 pm:

    Good luck to Michael Kopech.

    Welcome to the Majors.

    My only advice…

“Look, Mike… these big-league hitters are going to light you up like a pinball machine for a while, all right? Don’t worry about it. You be cocky and arrogant, even when you’re getting beat. That’s the secret. You gotta play this game with fear and arrogance.”

  11. - LoyalVirus - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:41 pm:

And I was horrified at the talk the Cubs would be trading for Harper. The specter of a trade for Murphy hadn’t crossed my mind. Yuk.

  12. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:44 pm:

Cardinals playing like the Cardinals again. And they are bringing back Matt Adams for some needed left handed pop off the bench.

Considering the Cubs already have Baez, Zobrist and Happ playing 2nd base, I am guessing they grabbed Murphy just so he couldn’t hit 4 hrs and sweep them out of the playoffs again.

  13. - Cubs Fan - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:45 pm:

Sox are going to break Michael Kopech in slow with a high AAA start.

  14. - RNUG - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:49 pm:

It’s been a great year for my favorite team … but then I’m a Cubs fan.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 2:56 pm:

If you’re looking to watch some good baseball, the American League is divided between 5-6 really outstanding clubs and 9-10 that are really awful.

You can catch the Red Sox at 6:15, then catch the A’s at 9:15 and have your baseball itch scratched. Throw in the Yankees and Indians, and “my” AL team, the Astros, you can catch some quality clubs playing in 3 time zones.

The AL playoffs will be brutal.

==It’s been a great year for my favorite team … but then I’m a Cubs fan.==

Yeah, their pitching has been great. /s

I was in Pittsburgh, saw all four cubs games. Very weak hitting. Worried. Pitching is solid

  18. - Nagidam - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:19 pm:

4 AL teams in the Wild Card hunt with 5 NL teams in the Wild Card hunt. All of this is good for baseball.

  19. - JoeMaddon - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:21 pm:

Kopech is going to feel like he was demoted and when he looks around the clubhouse and sees the “talent” around him.

  20. - Texas Red - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:28 pm:

Rreview of 2020 playoff’s when Kopech, Jimenez, Robert, Cease and Moncada are clicking

Pretty much, lol. Grab him before Milwaukee or St. Louis do. The guy absolutely destroyed Cubs pitching.

  22. - G'Kar - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:48 pm:

    > What team gives up only one run in five games in a row and only win two of the games???

That being said, the Pirates are playing much better ball than I expected and still have a legit shot at finishing over .500.

  23. - Amalia - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:48 pm:

    @Steve Rogers, 19,000 + Read a box score.

  24. - Leigh John-Ella - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:50 pm:

Just watch, Daniel Murphy will be 2018’s Jeff Blauser in a Cubs uniform.

  26. - Leigh John-Ella - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 3:53 pm:

Sister Mary Jo Sobiek and Yu Darvish were both on the mound this weekend. Darvish outlasted her, but not by much.

  27. - view from the cheap seats - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 4:58 pm:

Let’s be real - that curve ball is ridiculous. Love it

  28. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 5:01 pm:

Curious that the Cards or Brewers didn’t make a waiver claim to block the deal for Murphy. They would have had first crack, since they trail the Cubs in the standings.

If they had, it’s possible the Nats might have just pulled him back.

  29. - BlueDogDem - Tuesday, Aug 21, 18 @ 5:40 pm:

Word. Murphy has a rep for speaking up if playing time isn’t to his liking. Two possibilities. Maddon has given up on Russel or Bryant not ready. IMO.

Glad to see my Cardinals get Matt Adams back.

Sr. Jean at Loyola, Sr. Mary Jo at the Sox. It’s the year of the nun.
