  13. - Young Dinosaur - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:40 am:

Wait, no option for the benefit of hearing Janus speak without paying a fee?

  14. - Quizzical - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:41 am:

‘Cash bar available’ — if you’re a member of Mark’s collective bargaining unit, he’ll buy you a drink with all the money he saved freeloading off your dues.

  20. - Jocko - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:46 am:

==his modern day “David versus Goliath” story.==

If David had a wealthy benefactor supplying weapons and didn’t have a clear idea why he was fighting Goliath.

  21. - siualum - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:48 am:

Topic of talk: How to Sell Out Your Co-Workers for Fame and Fortune.

  22. - Original Rambler - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:53 am:

Wonder if Roskam was aware that Janus would be the keynote before agreeing to this. Not sure how being associated with Janus helps him in his reelection effort since Janus stokes union households.

  23. - wordslinger - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:54 am:

    –David vs. Goliath story–

So he’s King David? A wee bit full of ourselves, perhaps, for being the useful idiot to achieve standing in a lawsuit?

The better comparison, of course, is Janus the two-face in Roman mythology.

  24. - Anonymous - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 9:59 am:

    Honeybear, Mark your calendar.

  25. - A State Employee Guy - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:00 am:

    So Ann-us, then? Womp, womp.

  26. - Anon - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:00 am:

$45 per person, $80 per couple, but if you don’t agree with the keynote speaker you don’t have to pay and can eat and drink all you want for free.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:06 am:

“I told Bruce, ‘they call it the Janus ruling, get your own legacy’….”

  28. - 13thone - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:06 am:

Do yo think they would have a problem with me showing up for the dinner and not paying?

  29. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:09 am:

Worth noting that in 2017 the Elgin Township GOP managed to get swept from control of the township board by the Dems for the first time in over a century. This crew is historically inept.

  30. - Frank talks - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:09 am:

I wonder what other GOP folks show up besides Peter?

  31. - Anonymous - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:20 am:

Come meet the victor in Janus v. AFSCME and hear his ‘Judas v. Goliath’ story.

  32. - Al - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:21 am:

He did not quit; he applied with SERS to collect his retirement annuity.

  33. - paddyrollingstone - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:23 am:

To paraphrase the legendary Lionel Hutz:

Lionel Hutz: Mr. Janus, I don’t use the word ‘hero’ lightly, but you are the greatest hero in American history.

    Homer Janus: Woohoo!

  34. - Generic Drone - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:24 am:

Janus eats for free. I guess he gets another free ride. Why don’t this guy pay for anything?

  35. - Texas Red - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:27 am:

Hey there is a Bennigan’s attached to that Hotel, not many of them left. I love the Monte Cristo !

  36. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:29 am:

** modern day “David versus Goliath” story **

Poor Janus and his super-wealthy funders and supporters, the Davids of America. Janus suffered so much at the hands of AFSCME, with all those rights and job protections, secure pay and benefits.

  37. - ChicagoJ - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:31 am:

Y’all are having too much fun in this thread

  38. - SaulGoodman - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:42 am:

    **David and Goliath**

When a group of organized middle class workers tried to take on the very, very well funded pro-business, anti-union special interests.

  39. - a drop in - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:42 am:

“$45 per person, $80 per couple”

I don’t agree with the dessert; how much without it?

  40. - Ole' Nelson - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:55 am:

I choose to enjoy the delicious meal and listen to the speakers, but I am going to pass on the paying for it part.

  41. - Rutro - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 10:57 am:

Ahahhaha, they don’t really think people are going to pay to go to this.

  42. - Leigh John-Ella - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 11:00 am:

    Social hour with Mark Janus.
    Hoo boy

  43. - wordslinger - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 11:01 am:

–Hey there is a Bennigan’s attached to that Hotel, not many of them left.–

Good reasons for that. The magic of the marketplace.

No wonder you love Rauner’s flair. You’re the dude from Tchotchkes.

  44. - Deadbeat Conservative - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 11:18 am:

I wonder which version of his story he’s going to tell:
    1) I can negotiate my own pay and benefits and get a better result?
    2) I love(d) my job so much I had to destroy it and leave it to save it.
    3) My message that Rich people don’t have enough money so middle class workers should continue to give up pay and benefits to increase returns for high-dollar types is “winning”.

  45. - k3_spfld_chi - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 11:28 am:

Robert Siljestrom will also be there. He is a real catch.

Roskam’s race won’t turn out to be close. He will handely but seems to be taking the race very seriously as to not be knocked out like other GOP people. Roskam should be there.

  46. - Texas Red - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 11:38 am:

    “$45 per person”

Well those ‘Fair Share” fees were $47 each month to the union. So in a way this is free!

  47. - Sue - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 12:27 pm:

Hey OW- don’t think you have yet to make your feelings clear

  48. - Anonymous - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 12:39 pm:

a modern day “David versus Goliath” story

With the way Janus screwed-over his colleagues, his seems much more like a modern day “David vs. Uriah the Hittite” story.

    – MrJM

  49. - City Zen - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 12:41 pm:

==Do yo think they would have a problem with me showing up for the dinner and not paying?==

Depends. Are they the only place to eat dinner?

“CapFax Commenters still don’t understand the basic free speech and freedom of association issues in my case despite an official decision from the final arbiter of Constitutional law in the US!”

    -Fake Janus

    Gee davey

  61. - Streator Curmudgeon - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 2:11 pm:

I wonder if somebody is going to give Janus’s speech for him, too.

  62. - Stumpy's bunker - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 3:00 pm:

Move over, Mother Jones, IPI’s “Workers Rights Advocate” will clarify what you’ve said.

    (high-impact facepalm)

  63. - Stumpy's bunker - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 3:05 pm:

    He was never a David.

He just wanted to consort with the Goliaths.

    i.e., the real Goliaths

  66. - TominChicago - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 4:00 pm:

Actually Phil, I do understand the decision and I also understand that it is an opinion untethered from the law. There are many things the government force me to pay for even though I disagree with them. Trumps wall is but one example. Abboud struck the right balance.

  67. - Albany Park Patriot - Friday, Aug 24, 18 @ 4:05 pm:

“I was a pawn in the corporate effort to kill unions and all I got was this lousy sweater.”
