Question of the day
Monday, Sep 17, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller
* Brian Mackey…
As of Monday, there are 50 days until Election Day. And in the race for Illinois governor, debate season is finally getting underway.
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and his Democratic challenger, J.B. Pritzker, will meet in three formal debates in the coming month.
The first takes place this Thursday, and it’s sponsored by NBC Chicago and Telemundo, As well as the Union League of Chicago and the Chicago Urban League. […]
The first debate will also include the Libertarian Party candidate, Kash Jackson, as well as state Sen. Sam McCann, who left the Republican Party to run as a Conservative.
* The Question: Your debate preview?
- wordslinger - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:35 pm:
Kash Jackson makes news in some bizarre way.
- Angry Republican - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:37 pm:
Rauner won’t deviate from “blame Madigan”
Pritzker won’t give any specifics on his tax hike
McCann does anything and everything to get attention
Jackson ignored by everyone
- Henry Francis - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:41 pm:
My wish: Ives sitting in the front row of the audience messin’ with the Guv.
My prediction: Madigan, taxes, toilets. Failure, liar. Not a real republican. Vote for me and I’ll set you free.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:41 pm:
Rauner will continue to attack Pritzker, conceding he (Rauner) is terribly unlikable, and Pritzker (if they are at all smart in continuing the Rauner 2014 playbook) will begin every answer to every single question with “Bruce Rauner failed”… and Rauner chuckling, interrupting with ridiculousness like “outrageous” will make himself (Rauner) less and less likable, making the debates a wash… as Pritzker will focus on Rauner failings… and Rauner will continue to come off as the most unlikable person in this race.
Rauner gets angry and frustrated at times… one lil outburst will seal Rauner’s fate, even if Pritzker stumbles.

Kash Jackson doesn’t show up because Judge Salvi got tired of waiting for that child support check to clear

Kash Jackson answers all questions in limerick form.
- RNUG - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:51 pm:
Rauner will contiune to say he is the only hope for Illinois’ fiscal problems.
JB will be the likeable non-Rauner candidate who will make Illinois great again.
Jackson will find a way to self destruct.
And NcCann will try to position himself as the middle class, conservative, downstate alternative to the two rich guys. But even if he were to succeed beyond my wildest expectations, that would only get McCann 20% of the votes.
- Generic Drone - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:51 pm:
===if you vote for me all your wildest dreams come true===
Will there be a skit afterwards too?
These debates will provide nothing new. I will tune in to watch Rauner’s costume changes.
- njt16 - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:54 pm:
@DPS Browns - Jets or this debate? Tough choice where no one wins.
- Responsa - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:57 pm:
JB will wear a nice suit and tie.
Bruce will wear a nice suit and tie.
Both will smile a lot.
Both will dissemble when answering important questions.
Voters will come away from the debates thinking that these two are nothing like the demonic scourges on society as they have been portrayed by each other in ads and press releases.
- flea - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 1:58 pm:
McCann wins by 3 pints

Mostly boring with high probability of intermittent stale talking points. Some zingers can be expected.

“What do you think is the most important issue facing Illinois?”
JB: Tax inequity.
Rauner: Reforming our state government.
McCann: Returning Illinois to its conservative roots.
Jackson: Keeping the legal system from oppressing Dads like me!
Other 3: *blank stare*
- frisbee - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 2:07 pm:
McCann goes full bulldog on Rauner. Jackson either wears a costume or walks out halfway through claiming the “system is rigged” possibly both. Pritzker avoids details or direct answers on toilets, unions and taxes.

Madigan. Trump.
Trump. Madigan.
Madigan. Trump.

Oh goody, I wonder if Rauner will bring up Mike Madigan. Cue eye roll.

I predict Pritzker comes out like a lamb
. Very cautious. Very not “mean”.
Rauner comes out like an attack dog. Like a person down 19% in mid September.

Gov. Rauner will reveal more details about JB’s plan to insert a microchip in every citizen’s head as part of an elaborate plan involving ITAX scanners that will soon be as ubiquitous as Chase Bank, Starbucks, or Walgreen’s. JB will counter that he only wants to raise taxes on billionaires like himself and Rauner. The governor will turn purple with rage on the verge of tears while noting that his wealth doesn’t compare to JB’s. This will be the most truthful remark made by the governor who will protest furthermore about JB trying to buy the election. Rauner will then lecture about the absurd waste of saturation advertising. For all the hyperbole, I am confident the pathos will not extend to stories of parents in progressive income tax states being forced to cannibalize their children to survive, but I wouldn’t make book on that.

JB Pritzker will be relieved he’s moved on from having to debate Chris Kennedy.

I expect Rauner gonna Rauner. Don’t know what to expect from Pritzker, as far as performance. He seems like a pretty smart guy so I expect he should understand how to attack Rauner on his worst-ever performance.
- btowntruthfromforgottonia - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 3:38 pm:
Rauner goes negative and seals his fate in November.
Giving a “here is why people don’t like me” performance.

===Lots of g dropping by the guy.===
Only if he’s wearing his Carhartt and/or flannel shirt.
- Lt Guv - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 4:36 pm:
JB - “I got nothin’”
Rauner - “Because Madigan”
McCann - “Because Rauner”
Jackson “Where am I?”
- Robert the Bruce - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 4:39 pm:
Rauner has been a disaster as a governor but he’s good at staying on message and good on the attack.
So I’ll predict that Rauner will just laugh off the others and will effectively attack JB.
JB will disappoint; he’ll struggle to answer both questions from reporters and attacks from Rauner.

- Anonymous - Monday, Sep 17, 18 @ 5:54 pm:
Rauner will troll for applause by praising veterans and first responders and teachers and hard-workin’ trade union members.
The other candidates will then explain how Rauner sticks it to unions, was in charge and wasted time hiding the news when veterans died from tainted water in Quincy, vetoed pay increases and support for teachers and Illinois schools, cut MAP grants for kids wanting to go to school, cut funds that help first responders and cut two years’ worth of cadet classes and new squad cars for the State police. While making shady deals on the back porch of the Governor’s mansion, regarding a “blind trust” that isn’t.
Did I miss anything?

I predict Rauner will poll lower afterwards.

-Rauner has only been good at funding attacks. He has not been good at live attacks because he will be met with truth.
