5 questions for the governor

Wednesday, Sep 19, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’ve whacked JB Pritzker time and again for not explaining any details about his graduated income tax idea and his spending plans. But let’s think about this a bit

A Rauner campaign spokesman said, “Illinois doesn’t need higher taxes right now. We need to focus on lowering income taxes before we begin introducing new taxes.”

1) What specific budget cuts will the governor make to reduce the income tax rate?

2) What “new taxes” is the governor considering for the future?

* Marni Pyke

“I’m an anti-tax, anti-debt person,” said Rauner, a Winnetka venture capitalist. “I don’t like to borrow, but the appropriate place to borrow money is to fund infrastructure.”

3) If he’s “anti-tax,” why did he sign a budget that spent all of the tax hike revenues?

4) If he’s “anti-debt” and doesn’t “like to borrow,” why did he allow the state’s unpaid bills pile up into the billions?

5) If he wants to borrow to fund infrastructure, what specific revenue sources would he use to make the debt payments? And if it’s from GRF, where would he cut to afford those debt payments?

    Why? you ask? Because he has 2 sides of his mouth and uses them both apparently.

  2. - Old and The Way - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

    ………but Madigan.

  3. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:01 pm:

    Unless he wants to blow up the budget again and go back to running up unpaid bills again then saying we should cut taxes is ridiculous.

  4. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:02 pm:

    Waste,fraud,abuse……

    BTW,(RNUG-HOW YA LIKE that?), gov Rauner, I can find you $1.2 BILLION in cuts. All you gotta do is ask.

    ==I don’t like to borrow==

    Well, it appears you got pretty good at it during your term as governor.

  6. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:08 pm:

    Focus, Rich.

  7. - Michelle Flaherty - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:11 pm:

    Please stop with the relevant questions and issues. That is NOT what this campaign is about.

  8. - Maestro - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:14 pm:

    How about some simple ones like 1) Since you keep saying certain politicians are corrupt, are you also saying the U.S Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois isn’t doing their job? 2) Since it is likely a Democratic majority will be re-elected to the GA, how will you change your approach to dealing with them?

  9. - Publius - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:23 pm:

    Northern or southern Italy?

  10. - Pundent - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:25 pm:

    Blue Dog - You can’t find Google to educate yourself on half baked ideas. Why would the governor take you seriously?

  11. - benniefly2 - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

    ‘What are 5 questions Rauner will never answer?’, Alex. I’ll take ‘Potpourii’ for $300.

  12. - the Patriot - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

    In a rational world, I would say good point, but this is IL, not a rational world.

    We are past believing Rauner has a grasp on what he is doing, much less the ability to execute. The relevance of what is JB’s tax plan is because the question voters have now is whether the incompetent Rauner is worse than the pain JB could inflict with massive tax hikes and no actual plans.

  13. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:00 pm:

    ==Waste,fraud,abuse……==

    Those are nice code words that don’t mean a thing.

  14. - El Conquistador - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:05 pm:

    Finally someone asks Rauner about his duplicity regarding state finances. He has outright lied and misrepresented his agenda and intentions from the beginning.

    His veiled dark secret agenda is the cause of his failure along with his fake personality. The guy’s an untrustable charlatan.

  15. - Al - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:14 pm:

    Please stop poindextering him on the graduates tax plan. Ask him what the medical and recreational tax rates are going to be for Cannabis? How many hundreds of millions will be raised and how the funds will be spent?

  16. - Langhorne - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:21 pm:

    ===I’m an anti-tax, anti-debt person,” said Rauner,===

    $16 BILLION borrowed from service providers , crushing them

    $1 BILLION late interest penalties

    Just. Go. Away

  17. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:26 pm:

    Demo, I might be wrong, but I think he might be referring to a comment of RNUG’s awhile back where he posted a list of hypothetical budget cuts that could be made without serious impact.

    So, let’s say we can implement everything on RNUG’s list. All we need to do then is sell the Thompson Center this year at “appraised value” and presto, we’ve filled the $1.5 billion hole in this year’s budget. Not a dime of tax cuts there.

  18. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:28 pm:

    1 billion vig…says it all.

  19. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:30 pm:

    Since I am lobbying for a consulting job,it would be foolish for me to divulge any ideas at this time.

  20. - Earnest - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:42 pm:

    Wow, how sad is it that we have to ask someone “what would you do” with the budget when he’s actually submitted budgets for four years running. /s

  21. - BlueDogDem8 - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 2:15 pm:

    My five questions for Rauner.
    1. Could you define free market principles?
    2. Should SIU spend $47k to determine an equitable revenue split?
    3. Should the bobcat quotas be increased?
    4. Do you buy Oreos?
    5. Do you and Rahm still share a bottle now and then?

  22. - Whatever - Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 8:00 pm:

    ==1) What specific budget cuts will the governor make to reduce the income tax rate?==

    And the follow-up to any actual, detailed answer (which admittedly will never be forthcoming) is: Why didn’t you use your reduction veto power to make these reductions in the budgets that were sent to you, rather than simply vetoing them?
