Thursday, Sep 20, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The gubernatorial debate begins tonight at 6 and the station is promising “a Q&A session” with the candidates after the forum officially ends. So the fun won’t stop after an hour. The debate is being moderated tonight by the inestimable Carol Marin. My fave Mary Ann Ahern will take questions from the audience with Karla Leal.

* NBC 5’s embed is a bit janky and takes several seconds to load. If it doesn’t work well for you, use the “full screen” option or just click here and watch it on their site

Rich, thanks for providing this for us.

  2. - Baloneymous - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 5:35 pm:

Mark Maxwell has pics of Rauner volunteers holding signs. they look like little kids. stay classy Bruce. ugh

  3. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 5:38 pm:

    Thanks, Rich, for doing this.

    Appreciate it.

  4. - Baloneymous - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 5:45 pm:

and yes Rich thanks for this. I was just on google to look up a link and then realized, duh, try capfax…

  5. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:04 pm:

Pritzker should show he’s not getting any more reduction. Toilets or not.

  6. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:06 pm:

First “Madigan” 2 minutes in. Drink.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:06 pm:

If Madigan is in charge… why should Rauner get a second term. It’s disappointing to hear a governor so helpless

  8. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:09 pm:

–Asked about his “not in charge” comment, Rauner says everyone knows that Madigan has been in charge–

Most bizarre re-election campaign cornerstone ever: “Re-elect Rauner, he’s not in charge.”

That just supports Pritzker’s “four years of failure” foundation.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:10 pm:

    1) Pritzker: huge error… cant give a policy that requires an exacting number.

    2) Rauner wore a tie. You’re down 17 points, you wear a tie?

  10. - Amalia - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:12 pm:

    it’s raining mediocre men.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:12 pm:

    Well done.

Call Rauner out to lying to Cardinal Cupich.

    Good stuff.

  12. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:13 pm:

Zero based budgeting. There’s one we haven’t heard in awhile

  13. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:19 pm:

Rauner’s approach is that when he takes questions from the press. Rauner comes off combative. Not great.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:24 pm:

Pritzker is doing a good job at forcing the discussion to a simple point; Rauner is the incumbent.

It sounds simple. But really critical in these debates.

  15. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:25 pm:

Rauner might want to step up his rapid-response crew for the next one.

Pritzker has an army pounding away on social media, while it looks like Rauner’s press flack is flying solo.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:27 pm:

@avivabowen - The way Rauner talks you might not realize he was the guy at the switch for the last four years and that he held the state budget hostage for 700+ days, underfunded higher ed.

Critical the Pritzker makes Rauner the incumbent he’s “hiding” to be.

  17. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:28 pm:

    Sam is fired up!

  18. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:30 pm:

Curious decision by Rauner to go after McCann. Why elevate him?

  19. - Long Time R - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:31 pm:

Sam acting like he is full of hate like Ives

  20. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:35 pm:

McCann is living in Rauner’s kitchen, making omelettes, smoothies, and apple pie. It’s oretty comical Rauner cares about McCann

  21. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:35 pm:

My 8 year old just asked why Kash Jackson was so angry. My 6 year old said, “just don’t listen to him.”

    The kids are alright.

  22. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:36 pm:

    There went Sam’s FOP votes.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:39 pm:

    Guess Pritzker works dishonestly?

    Who says stuff like Rauner?

Rauner sounds too angry, not helpful.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:44 pm:

Rauner’s pivots towards Pritzker reinforce Rauner not having much to work with. Not a good look. Marin is giving Rauner openings to talk policy, Rauner talks Pritzker. That’s not great.

  25. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:45 pm:

Rauner’s attacks on Pritzker are falling flat.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:50 pm:

    Rauner crossed a picket line.

    Labor should know that.

Rauner lying about only reinforces Rauner and his contempt for labor. Good question by Marin

  27. - Perrid - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:51 pm:

And now a quiz about the price of groceries

  28. - Amalia - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:54 pm:

I’m wondering if this debate works like the one in the 50s between Eisenhower and Stevenson. Stevenson won with those who listened on radio. Eisenhower won with the tv crowd. I listen and think JB is doing fine. I watch and cringe.

  29. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 6:56 pm:

Rauner tried to passively close higher education institutions.

    That’s real.

  30. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:00 pm:

“In spite of” and not “because of”

That’s taking Rauner on as a failed incumbent

  31. - Original Rambler - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:01 pm:

Rauner seems pretty angry out there. Reminds me of the Simpsons “Angry Dad” episode.

  32. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:03 pm:

McCann seemed to rattle Rauner in so far as focus and being upset with just about everything.

The mea culpa is now a thing of the past.

  33. - Original Rambler - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:04 pm:

These are some wacky questions Carol is asking. Pretty disappointing.

  34. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:04 pm:

I don’t care much for Angry Bruce.

  35. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:06 pm:

The question after Rauner facing Pritzker is…

“Why would I choose Rauner after that debate performance?”

  36. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:07 pm:

    Biggest takeaway?

===“In spite of” and not “because of”

That’s taking Rauner on as a failed incumbent===

    Yikes that’s good stuff.

  37. - ZC - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:10 pm:

I think what I most learned is I’m not sure Kash Jackson knows what “crossing a picket line” means.

  38. - Original Rambler - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:11 pm:

Agree that the “in spite of” was the money line in this debate.

  39. - illini - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:12 pm:

Many thanks to my “friends” Willy, Word and AA for their running commentary. Quite concise and accurate.

I was too busy taking a “drink” every time Rauner attempted to deflect blame for his failures or to divert the question to something he was not asked to be available to comment. So, I am good right now.

    And, thank you again Rich.

  40. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:24 pm:

Thank you Rich for this feed and everyone else.

I thought Pritzker would do worse but he did better than I expected. He didn’t let Rauner just attack him.

Rauner doubled down on unlikeability and negativity. At the end he said this election is about taxes and corruption. That’s pretty limited. Others have different ideas, like legalizing marijuana and expanding health insurance.

  41. - Thought - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 7:32 pm:

Rauner is half wrong. JB is half shady. Could we get someone less wrong and less shady to run? Is this what our politics have come to? The gilded class spending their fortunes to buy political system as the corporations and unions have already? Good times. This country is the Titanic

  42. - Dr. M - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 8:01 pm:

Is there an active link for the replay of the debate yet?

  43. - Huckleberry Mentat - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 8:06 pm:

Thought, sometimes I despair too, but as long as forums like this exist for the civil exchange of free ideas, I believe Democracy is alive if not necessarily well

  44. - XDNR - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 8:43 pm:

Thanks Rich for the feed. My take is that Rauner was defensive, rattled and reflective/weak in his responses to the questions, whereas Pritzker came across as more confident and articulate/fact based. Rauner’s Madigan/corrupt and saying McCann was a Madigan plant was lame and given the metro Chicago audience didn’t give him any points.

  45. - Ryan - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:15 pm:

    Benjamin Winderweedle won.

  46. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:36 pm:

–I’m wondering if this debate works like the one in the 50s between Eisenhower and Stevenson. Stevenson won with those who listened on radio. Eisenhower won with the tv crowd.–

You’re thinking Kennedy and Nixon in 1960, first presidential candidate debates, ever.

Four in all, the first at CBS studios on McClurg Court, with a 61% rating.

  47. - btowntruth from forgottonia - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:50 pm:

Bruce officially kissed the Chicago and Cook County vote goodbye tonight.

  48. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:53 pm:

Check out the social media feeds provided here. The Pritzker crew — campaign staff and Dem lawmakers — beat BTIA(TM) like a rented mule during and after the debate.

Where are the Rauner supporters, after he spent all that money? His campaign staff couldn’t keep up.

That Illinois Democratic Party chairman is just on the cutting edge of today’s communications platforms.

  49. - Arsenal - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:00 pm:

    Nothing that changed anything.

Every day we say that is a good day for JB.

  50. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:51 pm:

McCann, voting his district, cast one meaningless vote on one labor bill that didn’t become law.

Instead of letting it slide like a well-adjusted person, Bully Boy Rauner went apey and spent millions in an unsuccessful attempt to primary McCann, entrusting the job to Bizarro Midas Proft (all the gold he touches turns to stuff).

It wasn’t just about punishing McCann, of course, but to intimidate other GOP legislators to stay in line, all the time, or else.

How’s that strategery looking these days?

McCann and Proft are both beating the stuff out of Rauner every chance they get, Rauner was humiliated by a House GOP revolt on the budget, and he came within a whisker of losing the GOP primary to Jeanne Ives.

    Rauner’s troubles are “Because….. Rauner.”

  51. - Trapped in the ‘burbs - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 8:46 am:

Sam’s contempt for Rauner is very telling. It seems likely that conservatives share his view of Rauner. I would not be surprised if Rauner comes in third. The Ives voters are not coming back.

  52. - Anonymous - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 9:15 am:

JB doesn’t come across well on TV.
McCann seemed like a big eyed loon.
    Kash seemed goofy.
Rauner won the debate. Hope he wins the election.

  53. - Ole' Nelson - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 9:18 am:

Rauner won the debate. Hope he wins the election.

Maybe we all see what we want to see.

  54. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Sep 21, 18 @ 9:22 am:

    ===Rauner won the debate.===

Rauner said he wasn’t in charge.

You win by claiming you are irrelevant?

    Ok, I guess.
