Pritzker’s Downstate response ad: “Lie. Lie. Lie.”

Thursday, Sep 20, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* You’ll recall that Gov. Bruce Rauner launched an ad over the weekend that included a bunch of hot-button issues targeted at Downstate voters. Pritzker’s campaign never lets anything go unanswered, so earlier this week they started running their own Downstate ad. It’s quite something

* Script…

Bruce Rauner lies.

He lied to the Cardinal of the Catholic Church about signing an abortion coverage bill. He lied about Jeanne Ives. And now he’s lying about JB Pritzker.

Lie. Lie. Lie. Four years of failure is enough.

Thoughts?

    The ad tells the truth.
It’s all one needs to know about Rauner whose end is near

  2. - City Zen - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:41 am:

Will the Thompson Twins get any residuals from this?

Just wait til the debate tonight.

  4. - Arsenal - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:44 am:

Repeating “lie” a bunch is kind of obnoxious, but it’s quick and to the point and the examples are well-picked.

    JB ad is on point.
Leaves GovJunk with nothin’ to talk about tonight and going forward

I saw it this morning. Quick and to the point. This is a good one. A

  7. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:54 am:

I wish the ad mentioned Rauner calling Ives Madigan’s favorite Republican, but maybe I’m quibblin’.

Great for Pritzker to respond to Rauner’s downstate ad. Fight everywhere if you have the resources and a governor who’s a lying Chicago neoliberal and downstate resentment hustler.

  8. - Midstate Indy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:55 am:

Streaming video ads are sequenced Rauner/Pritzker or Pritzker/Rauner, depending on the commercial break, but both ads back to back every time.

Few Rauner signs in my area, and in fact seeing some absolute die hard GOP stalwarts sitting it out, and even some embrace of dem candidates for local races.

I can’t imagine that any voter in my area doesn’t already have their mind made up, but the ‘Chicago Liberal’ narrative will probably boost Pritzker’s unfavorable, as will the ‘Rauner dissed Ives’ narrative. I find it interesting that they are both fighting so hard over counties that should be so solidly GOP that the candidate need only be breathing. However, it is nice to see a spark of party apparatus on both sides in areas that have felt forgotten since FDR.

    ===Rauner calling Ives Madigan’s favorite Republican===

    It’s in the visuals.

  10. - JS Mill - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 9:57 am:

An “A”. The ad is concise and perfectly on message. It is also true.

Good ad….and it has the benefit of being true.

== Repeating “lie” a bunch is kind of obnoxious, but it’s quick and to the point and the examples are well-picked. ==

Hey, at least it is “obnoxious” for only 15 seconds as opposed to the four years Rauner has been so…

  14. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:05 am:

The lying to a Chicago Cardinal… devastating

  15. - Anonymous - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:06 am:

Is it a response to anything? Or is it an ad they’d run in the final weeks anyway?

It’s not going to swing anyone to Pritzker, but it’s go8ng to take the enthusiasm out of Rauner supporters and Hamlets right, this will boost turnout for McCann. And it’s brief, and therefore cheap to air.

Fish in a barrel, but well done.

Misstate Indy- I am see McCann sign where once there were Rauner signs. Sam may win a few precincts in Sangamon County

If so I say they will mainly be in his current 50th Senate district, and possibly even some precincts in Manar’s 48th too

“Is it a response to anything? Or is it an ad they’d run in the final weeks anyway“

Yes. It’s a response to the screaming negative ad from Rauner in which he claims JB wants to ban handguns and puts the 1998 attribution in teeny tiny type.

Seriously, did you even read the title or first line of the post?

  20. - Al - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:31 am:

The unfortunate thing for the I am not in charge Governor, is people have seen him in action for three and a half years. When he is called a liar and a failure it sticks, people believe it because it was what they already concluded and were thinking anyway.

  21. - Streator Curmudgeon - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:31 am:

Am I the only one who thinks this won’t change any Republican voters’ minds? Saw one of my neighbors put out a new Jerry Long sign the other day. People believe what they want to believe.

This ad may sway some Independents, but I think folks tend to vote their favorite party, NO MATTER WHAT.

  22. - slow down - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 10:37 am:

    ===A priest, a cowboy and a rabbi walk into a bar….===

… Rauner lies to all three… thinks no one will notice.

    What a joke.

  26. - the old man - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 11:05 am:

here we are 47 days out from the election and most of the voters in many counties have already turned off the TV ads and are waiting for the World Series

== Repeating “lie” a bunch is kind of obnoxious, but it’s quick and to the point and the examples are well-picked. ==

Not as obnoxious as shouting “Madigan,Madigan, Madigan” for four years.

Quick powerful jabs that have the impact of a jawbreakinn’ roundhouse. It also has the virtue of being indisputably true.

  30. - Responsa - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 12:54 pm:

I get that candidates have the need to fight back when they feel they’ve been maligned by their opponents. I also think the words “lie” and “lying” have become so overused in political ads, by all sides and for all occasions, though, that those words have become basically meaningless as persuasive messaging. There’s a whole world of words out there for the taking and it’d be great to see some of the ad writers use a little originality and creativity.
This is not a very good ad. Since Rauner is not running against Cupich or Ives it would have been better use of ad money if it had mentioned what the beef is with Rauner’s ads and statements about Pritzker that are “lies”.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 12:59 pm:

===Rauner is not running against Cupich or Ives===

Rauner is running against Madigan either…. but here we are… LOL

    Rauner lies… that’s the message.

Rauner lies to a Catholic Cardinal.

  32. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 1:34 pm:

MLB, well known to have the oldest fanbase of the four major North American sports. Of course, “the demo” is 25-54.

  34. - Hamlet's Ghost - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 2:21 pm:

Since Rauner is not running against Cupich or Ives . . .

Persuading Rauner voters to switch and vote JB is a tall order.

Persuading Rauner voters to stay home or punch McCann is a much easier task and also is an effective path towards JB’s desired final result

  35. - wondering - Thursday, Sep 20, 18 @ 4:32 pm:

SC, if what you say is true how did Rauner get elected? This is a good add. Has alliteration, has sensical reptition… 3 statements encapsulated in 3 repeated words. Drives the point home. Not obnoxious at all, known truth enunciated.
