The GOP plays the Madigan card even when no such card exists

Thursday, Oct 25, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Democrat Jim Caffrey has raised no money from Speaker Madigan either directly or indirectly and has said time and time again that he won’t support Madigan for House Speaker if he’s elected, but he’s still getting Madiganed in the mail

The flier, which says it was paid for by the Republican Party, calls Caffrey a “hand-picked candidate” by House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Even when they clearly run away from Madigan, they’re still tied to him.

* And check out this exchange between Caffrey and appointed GOP Rep. Deanne Mazzochi during a Daily Herald candidate interview

“One of the founding reasons I got in this race is because we need to select a new speaker of the House,” Caffrey said. “The speaker has been there for 33 of the last 35 years. And we need to be asking if we’re seeing the results we should be seeing and the answer is no. We’re not, so we need to make that change.”

Mazzochi then accused Caffrey of “perpetuating the Madigan machine.”

“When (Caffrey) says ‘I think I’m going to vote for a Democrat, just not Mike Madigan,’ well the fact of the matter is if you cast that vote, you’re still going to get more Mike Madigan,” Mazzochi said. “Even if you say you won’t vote for Madigan for speaker, if you ultimately wind up voting for all the things Mike Madigan is interested in, such as the graduated income tax, you’re going to wind up in the same problematic position we’ve been in.”

If you’re looking for fairness in this game you’re looking in the wrong place.

  2. - Exit 59 - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:40 pm:

But, if you vote for the Republican, you’ll still probably get more Madigan so… (shrug?)

  3. - JS Mill - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:44 pm:

Do these hacks get paid extra every time they say “Madigan”?

So, if this how it s going to be, why would any democrat run from MJM if they are going to be tagged with him anyway? Cozy up, get some money and help.

  4. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:45 pm:

Raunerism took “because Madigan” from Tom Cross’ golfing days to “we have nothing but Madigan…”

The ILGOP brand will need to regroup at some point, it’s just not now.

It’s embarrassing… a whole party can’t stand for anything but being against Madigan.

I’m looking forward to see how a rebuild could happen.

  5. - Shemp - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:49 pm:

Of course a Democrat candidate is going to be tagged with this. Does anyone think Madigan and his power structure is good for Illinois? Do his own party members really think he is good for Illinois, or are they all just either in fear or making nice to get influence via his good graces?

There’s only one way to know for certain: Cast Jim Caffrey into the river. If he floats, we’ll know he’s part of the Madigan machine. But if he drowns in the river, we’ll know he’s pure.

At this point, why not just take the Madigan money? Their gonna go after you either way, may as well get some extra campaign cash.

  8. - Hamlet's Ghost - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:54 pm:

Whether it’s Caffrey or Mazzochi not voting for MJM for Speaker the end result will be the same, Madigan will be re-elected Speaker.

But, Caffrey not voting for MJM for Speaker would get more press than Mazzochi not voting for Madigan for Speaker.

  9. - Skeptic - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 3:57 pm:

“Cast Jim Caffrey into the river. If he floats, we’ll know he’s part of the Madigan machine.” Or else he’s a duck.

Based on the 45 ad earlier and McCanns ad yesterday the GOP is literally using the Georgia Republican playbook.

I hope that whole rationale, from story to tip-in, is revisited. Often.

    Delicious.

  16. - Just Me - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 4:41 pm:

The Dems are slamming every Republican for being associated with Rauner or Trump, so what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

    - Just Me -

The “Madigan Love” goes back much farther than Trump.

Lest we forget the successful “Fire Madigan” which led to Madigan going veto-proof on the GOP.

    Raunerbots gotta Raunerbot.

  19. - Amalia - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 6:02 pm:

I’m afraid I will be Madiganed and I’m not running for office. Congressional candidates, gov candidate, all Dems running are getting Madiganed. there’s more of that than there is Trumping, and those Congressional candidates hawk his agenda.

  20. - Precinct Captain - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 6:29 pm:

Is this the same Deanne Mazzochi who threatened to have her College of DuPage colleagues arrested for reviewing legal bills? Sounds like only one person is on a corrupt power trip, and that’s Deanne Mazzochi

  21. - Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 6:48 pm:

The GOP has read the polls, Madigan is the 2nd most unpopular person in Illinois. The 1st is Gov. Rauner.

  22. - nancilynn - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 10:28 pm:

My mailbox is stuffed with flyers from the Dems and the Repubs. The Dems support Obamacare and a woman’s right to choose. The Repubs are running against Madigan; they don’t even know their actual opponents name.

  23. - nancilynn - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 10:31 pm:

I wish all the Democrats ran ads like Raja Krishamoorthi (Congress). In fact, I wish the Repubs would do that too.
What do the Repubs stand for other than demonizing Madigan?

  24. - Honey Bear - Thursday, Oct 25, 18 @ 10:59 pm:

Women shouldn’t be allowed to vote. The goofy juice running wild in their system makes them crazed and too emotional. The fact is every great society actually starts declining once women are allowed to vote.

  25. - low level - Friday, Oct 26, 18 @ 8:57 am:

even if Caffrey said he’d consider voting for Durkin, Mazzochi would somehow tie that in w Madigan
