* What’s the mindset that leads to something like this?…

  1. - Man with a Plan - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:40 pm:

Does that count the people who tried to vote for McCann twice?

  2. - John Amdor - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:41 pm:

Ranked choice voting by hook or by crook.

  3. - NIU Grad - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:42 pm:

“Well I’m Republican and Conservative, so…”

  4. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:44 pm:

    If you are a liberal…

… you may want Bruce Rauner’s uber-left, costal, London’s liberal social agenda (Thanks, Diana)…

… and want Pritzker to be the fiscal liberal Rauner isn’t.

*Note: Rauner isn’t a fiscal conservative by any matrix measure. Rauner isn’t a fiscal liberal or any fiscal anything except ring up large debt to crush labor.

I guess in that context, sure, it makes total sense…. maybe… really…

    No.

  5. - Keyrock - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:47 pm:

High school civics education has sure gone downhill?
People didn’t understand that the $20 per vote offer could only be used once?

  6. - Retired Educator - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:47 pm:

This brings back the old adage “Vote early, vote often” But you shouldn’t really do it on the same ballot.

  7. - Nacho - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:48 pm:

“You’re not supposed to take Anybody But Rauner that literally.”

  8. - Robert the Bruce - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:49 pm:

Perhaps people took the Rauner attack ads seriously and thought they were to vote Pritzker and write in Madigan?

  9. - Can - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:50 pm:

But … but … I wanted to vote for Pritzker and help the Conservative Party get to 5 percent.

  10. - Cubs in '16 - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:52 pm:

With our current choices, perhaps voters are thinking we need at least two of these guys to equal one functioning governor.

  11. - Archpundit - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:54 pm:

Is there a ballot design issue? That’s usually what leads to consistent overvoting.

  12. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:55 pm:

It’s not difficult to tell the GA candidates for governor apart.

  13. - Puzzled - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 1:56 pm:

I have never worked in the County Clerk office, but my understanding is that votes are not tallied until Nov. 6 even for the early ballots. Certainly no indication of results are released. Did anyone vet this with the State Board of Elections? Puzzled at how anyone would know this to be a fact??

  14. - Archpundit - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:00 pm:

-Puzzled at how anyone would know this to be a fact??

The optical scan ballots usually signal overvotes when you feed it to the machine. I’m assuming they are using optical scan.

Also, if you have a choice–use the optical scan ballots–they are the most reliable and have the fewest undervotes compared to other systems meaning they are the most accurate form of voting technology currently used.

  15. - Anon221 - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:06 pm:

    Here’s the specimen ballot-

    http://www.co.macon.il.us/download/voter-specimen-ballot/

(Love it that Winderweedle is explained on the ballot:) )

  16. - NATTY BOY - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:06 pm:

These are the same people the “please take the cardboard backing off the frozen pizza before placing in the oven” warning was made for.

  17. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:11 pm:

What does “attempted to vote for more than one” mean? They voted twice or they spoiled their ballots by voting for two candidates in the same race which functionally means they didn’t vote for that race at all?

  18. - Responsa - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:12 pm:

This is interesting. I agree with Puzzled’s puzzlement. Also, as an election judge I know that when voting in person (whether early or on election day) the optical scanner dings an overvote or undervote, and the voter has immediate opportunity to void the ballot and/or fix it. If these are absentees or vote by mail that are being fed into the ballot box at the county clerk’s office do they just count as spoiled ballots? Need more info.

  19. - Archpundit - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:20 pm:

There are no obvious problems I see–I’m not an expert on design, but the basics seem to be there. I’m wondering if the reporter is taking something said too literally?

  20. - Archpundit - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:23 pm:

-==These are the same people the “please take the cardboard backing off the frozen pizza before placing in the oven” warning was made for.

TBF, many of us know to do this, but forget and the note helps. So a friend tells me or something.

  21. - El Conquistador - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:26 pm:

Stupidity, unfortunately for the feast of us.

  22. - Puzzled - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:29 pm:

Thanks to Archpundit for the explanation of how this could be known. I agree with others in amazement at how this could happen.

  23. - Fax Machine - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:31 pm:

Primary elections often show you how disconnected some people are from the political process.

First you have people who get indignant that they have to declare which party’s ballot they want to take.

Then you get the people who get mad that they can’t vote for candidates in both parties.

  24. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:33 pm:

STEM needs to be changed to C-STEM, to include Civics.

  25. - SOIL M - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:34 pm:

I don’t want to vote for any candidate for governor, and they are over voting

  26. - LeadingInDecatur - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:42 pm:

Election judges actually warned me about this as I entered the voting booth… must have been a consistent problem.

  27. - leoFromChicago - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:42 pm:

Do we get two governors then? Seems logical.

  28. - a drop in - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:47 pm:

There are signs people are voting for the first time or voted infrequently. Learning curve maybe?

  29. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:47 pm:

One for Chicago, and one for Downstate. Duh.

  30. - Techie - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:55 pm:

We should all be allowed to do this - it’s called approval voting. That’s literally what it is - allowing you to vote for as many candidates as you want, and the candidate with the most votes wins.

It would give third party and independent candidates a fair chance.

  31. - Scott Tapley - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 2:55 pm:

Helps explain why some people think the burden of requiring ID to vote is too much. [smh]

  32. - @misterjayem - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 3:02 pm:

I came here to say what Archpundit has already posted.

Some examples of problematic ballot designs can be found here: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/q-a-with-philip-kortum/

    – MrJM

  33. - potato - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 3:07 pm:

Over and under voting is very common. Some people do it accidentally and others do it on purpose. The election authority is required to notify the person of an over or under vote and give them an opportunity to vote a new ballot or keep their ballot as is.

  34. - Publius - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 3:27 pm:

Why isn’t Macon unity counting votes? Is early vote to be tabulated after the Election Day vote

  35. - Publius - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 3:29 pm:

Why is Macon county counting votes …. sorry

  36. - thechampaignlife - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 3:33 pm:

Maybe it is there way of advocating for approval voting?

  37. - @misterjayem - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 4:38 pm:

“Why is Macon county counting votes”

    They’re not.

The machines are rejecting ballots with over-votes — those with more than one candidate marked in a single race — and allowing the voters the option of correcting their mistake.

Ballots are rejected for over-votes BEFORE they are tallied.

    – MrJM

  38. - Responsa - Monday, Oct 29, 18 @ 5:20 pm:

But over-votes cannot be “corrected” if the ballots are mailed in and the voter is not physically present to make the correction. So a double vote for governor in that case would be rejected and I believe would result in no vote for governor for that voter.
