Ives backs Krupa even after allegations emerge

Tuesday, Dec 18, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Rep. Jeanne Ives

Meet David Krupa and help him take out Mike Madigan’s General!

I am sending this to my entire statewide email list and beyond. And I am asking all of you to send this guy $10 to keep his fight going against the Madigan Machine. See how to contribute below.

Here is the headline of the recent John Kass column in the Chicago Tribune:

College kid beats back the Chicago machine and Boss Madigan blinks

Kass summed it up in his opening line, “DePaul University freshman David Krupa scored an impressive victory in Chicago politics on Saturday: Boss Madigan — the most powerful Democrat in Illinois — backed out of a challenge to Krupa’s candidacy for alderman in the Southwest Side’s 13th Ward.

“I am truly humbled to be the first candidate on the ballot to challenge the 13th Ward since 1991,” Krupa, 19, told me at the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners offices on Saturday. “This is a huge defeat for (Michael) Madigan’s organization, and the beginning of the end of boss politics.”

* But there’s another issue about something that happened just last year. CBS 2

Aldermanic candidate for Chicago’s 13th Ward, David Krupa, is talking about a 2017 order of protection obtained by CBS 2.

The court documents were filed by the father of a girl Krupa dated on and off for about 2.5 years.

He described it as “just a teenage relationship.”

Her father decided that she wouldn’t be able to handle a relationship at that time–he filled it out for her,” he said.

Interestingly enough, the station didn’t disclose what the claims were.

* Politico did

In 2017, he was accused of abuse by his former high school girlfriend. An emergency order of protection was granted in June 2017 and extended for nine months after Juliet Schmidt filed her complaint, according to court documents sent to POLITICO. The filing in the Circuit Court of Cook County Domestic Violence division describes Krupa as a “controlling” boyfriend who “isolated” Schmidt from her friends, whom he referred to as “liberal faggots.” The document details incessant text messages and an incident in which he chased Schmidt in his car while she was walking.

“It was emotionally abusive,” Schmidt told POLITICO in an interview Sunday. “It wasn’t healthy for me to continue the relationship. He had a lot of issues of control. I could see him taking advantage of that in political office.”

In seeking the order of protection, Schmidt wrote, “I am afraid that David Krupa will continue to physically abuse me, harass me, interfere with my personal liberty and stalk me. Therefore, I fear for the safety of myself.” The order of protection ran nine months and ended when neither Schmidt nor Krupa could agree on a hearing date, Schmidt said. The judge didn’t rule on the case and Schmidt left Chicago to attend college out of state.

There’s also an allegation that Krupa removed his condom during intercourse without her knowledge or consent and a claim that the young woman attempted to commit suicide because of his behavior.

* Press release…

Based on recently-reported details of 13th Ward Aldermanic candidate David Krupa’s unacceptable personal conduct towards a young woman and his extreme Trump agenda, a group of leaders and activists are calling for the opportunity for a full public vetting of Krupa so voters can reject his candidacy.

The following statement can be attributed to Personal PAC President and CEO Terry Cosgrove, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 President-Business Manager James Sweeney, and the Chicago Teachers’ Union:

“David Krupa has sold out to the extreme Trump agenda that would deny health care to millions, harass and intimidate families in our community, and allow deadly, military-style assault weapons on our streets. Even more troubling is the existence of an order of protection against Mr. Krupa citing malicious and outrageous behavior against a woman. Mr. Krupa has put himself forward as a candidate for public office, and we believe he should now have to face voters and explain himself.

“Voters deserve to see everything Mr. Krupa is hiding from them, and they deserve the opportunity to reject him. No one whose personal conduct and whose extreme agenda so offend the people of Chicago should have the opportunity to hide behind false claims of victimhood, but that is no doubt what a politician like Mr. Krupa would attempt to do should he be removed from the ballot. Given his past conduct, we hope voters have the chance to reject his outrageous candidacy.”

This is terrible, and I feel bad laughing at this, but I just can’t stop. Ives sure knows how to pick’em.

  2. - NIU Grad - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:46 am:

Knowing who she supports for president, he’s right up her alley. Party of morals…

    PoisonIves strikes again.

  4. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:52 am:

Kass wrote 3 columns on this guy and the Editorial Board did another yesterday. What ever happened to reporting John?

  5. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:56 am:

While the 13th Ward org’s actions are shady, ILGOP/the Trib are going to regret getting in bed with this guy.

  6. - Scott Cross for President - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:56 am:

Didn’t Jeanne Ives recently tell Mike Flannery she is not aware of any sexual misconduct or harassment by men on her side of the aisle, rather it’s (another) “Madigan problem” ?

  7. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:58 am:

Talk about an imperfect vehicle for anti-Madigan outrage. Geez.

  8. - buck'n'irish - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:59 am:

From his first editorial it was easy to think really Kass? this is the battle you want to wage. Old man is losing his marbles if he thought this would turn out well. Shame on the 13th though for giving this guy any kind of air to breath

  9. - Tommydanger - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:59 am:

Krupa wanted the attention. It might not be the type he planned on getting.

Ives wants continued attention. She doesn’t care what type, as long as people keep mentioning her name.

  10. - NotRich - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:01 am:

How many voters in the 13th Ward A). Buy the Trib and read Kass? B). Would follow Jeannie ( I hate immigrants) Ives..
THIS is why the Republican Party is irrelevant in Illinois

  11. - once again the electorate is the victim - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:05 am:

as unfortunately, neither of these candidates comes in with clean hands…

  12. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:06 am:

Yeah, this is the guy you want at the vanguard of rebuilding the Illinois GOP. He’ll do wonders for their problems with women voters.

Curious that Kass and the edit board didn’t get the whole story.

  13. - DuPage - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:08 am:

I wouldn’t want that guy dating my daughter. His actions show a disregard for safety of other people.

  14. - Grand Avenue - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:08 am:

When they had all this oppo ammo against him - he is a Trump supporter and has this Order of Protection against him - why in the world were they playing shenanigans and running an organized perjury ring to try to disqualify his signatures?

Just dump an avalanche of 5 mailers a week on his head and whoop his behind on election day.

  15. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:09 am:

This is why Wordslinger and other commentators said this story needed a real reporter, not John Kass. Holy cripes.

  16. - I Don't Get It? - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:11 am:

Sounds like the 19 year old is not qualified at best and probably much worse - He would most likely lose the election.

However, he makes the paper based upon the actions of the 13th ward, and now Cosgrove, Local 150, etc are all coming out “guns a blazing”

This is all happening in a ward that has many people on the public payroll and controlled by the most powerful man in the State. Madigan is bringing a gun to knife fight - He is smart and typically does not operate this way - I don’t get it?

  17. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:14 am:

Jeanne Ives is the vanguard for standing up for women? Hardly. More like the vanguard for hypocrisy.

  18. - Baggs McCoy - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:15 am:

The one thing about Rep. Ives is that she really does stick to her beliefs…odd as they are. If she really wants to help victims of sexual assault/abuse she should drop this guy like a hot potato. I guess she could say innocent until proven guilty but this is not a he said she said accusation.

Rep Ives, Read the Order of Protection. Withdrawal your endorsement. To do anything else seals your fate.

  19. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:17 am:

“I am afraid that David Krupa will continue to physically abuse me, harass me, interfere with my personal liberty and stalk me. Therefore, I fear for the safety of myself.”

Did he really think this wouldn’t come out? Seriously? Sounds like he’s got way bigger issues to deal with than politics.

  20. - Stark - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:23 am:

Jeanne Ives’ endorsing of Krupa while criticizing the Speaker’s organization? Pot, meet kettle.

  21. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:24 am:

Allegations do not always equal facts. Sad to say, filings in domestic relations cases sometimes contain the most outrageous claims — many of which are never substantiated in subsequent proceedings. Quinn is not in the best position to hurl stones given his brother’s antics, so he passed the job off to surrogates.

Last week, everyone was predicting Krupa would be removed from the ballot. When that failed, the smear campaign began in earnest.

What startles me is that the 13th Ward hasn’t had an aldermanic contest since 1991.

  22. - Jocko - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:25 am:

Maybe Krupa should put in a call to Kash Jackson for some political advice. /s

  23. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:25 am:

I’m fine with Jeanne Ives supporting a guy who hits women. But then I would never, ever support Ives in any way.

  24. - Anon324 - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:26 am:

His comments in the Politico article are straight out of the Rauner “Because Madigan” playbook. She filed for an Emergency Order of Protection in June 2017, well before he filed campaign papers, because she was being manipulated by Madigan. You can’t make this stuff up.

  25. - Fixer - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:28 am:

Well, that might explain backing out on challenging the signatures. Skeletons don’t stay in their closets nearly as well as they used to.

  26. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:31 am:

How is this guy even relevant? Does anyone here belief this guy has even a 1% chance of bearing quinn?

  27. - 19th Ward guy - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:32 am:

Beyond being another example of her tone deafness—does anybody really think that a Jeanne Ives endorsement or even a fundraising effort is helpful in the 13th Ward? I’m guessing the soon to be former State Rep couldn’t find the 13th ward with Mapquest. And isn’t she lockstep with the guy who wants to build the wall. How does that appeal to a primarily hispanic electorate. The intersection of angry and not very well informed is a dangerous place Ms, Ives.

  28. - Chicagonk - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:32 am:

Marty Quinn was worried about losing to a 19-year-old alleged abuser and apparent homophobe? He’s got to give himself a little more credit than that.

  29. - Moe Berg - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:43 am:

This Krupa statement sends my alarm bells ringing:

“Her father decided that she wouldn’t be able to handle a relationship at that time–he filled it out for her,” he said.

That’s a pretty obvious, blatant lie. Parents who don’t want their children dating do not get orders-of-protection against their would-be-suitors.

Not surprised Krupa’s a Trump guy. Trump’s own expression of his morality is to take what you want and say anything that serves your interest at the moment, regardless of the truth.

Also, this isn’t the podunk town council. While age obviously doesn’t guarantee wisdom, as the Chicago City Hall regularly reminds us, graduating college or trade school, and having a little experience of the world, is important for serving in such a position. Yet another way the Trib going all-in for this near-juvenile is disturbing.

  30. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:44 am:

–Last week, everyone was predicting Krupa would be removed from the ballot.–

“Everyone” was doing that? I don’t remember that at all. Maybe you have some links.

–When that failed, the smear campaign began in earnest.–

It’s not a “smear campaign” to publish the contents of public records. It’s called “journalism.”

  31. - Gooner - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 11:58 am:

Shocking that an outstanding journalist like John Kass would miss those details before publishing the stories. /snark/

  32. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 12:13 pm:

Krupa is unfit for any public office of any kind.

  33. - Frank talks - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 12:15 pm:

This young man worked for Madigan’s organization at one point for a summer gig. I’m sure someone put his name in and got him the job.

Jeanne Ives and every candidate she now puts her name to, will be a supporter of Madigan’s corrupt patronage army.

Very simple to put her letter in a mail piece saying support David Krupa next line say Krupa was an insider patronage hire who worked for Madigan. All bold print.

Is it truthful, meh. Rauner flooded the airwaves with Madigan’s favorite candidate and won. This is a crack into the hard right. Not only do you have a whole campaign that was done by Rauner, you now have actual proof she supports a Madigan patronage candidate.

  34. - Molly Maguire - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 12:31 pm:

Only good thing is maybe Kass gets seen for what he is, and the Trib has to pull the plug. Or maybe the Trib has decided that is price of selling papers to mugs.

  35. - Les Nessman - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 12:32 pm:

I guess stalking, intimidation, mental abuse to point of inducing physical harm to oneself is okay with Representative Ives. She should say she is okay with all of that to victims of sexual harassment she stood next to last spring.

  36. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 12:38 pm:

If this is the Republican Party that Ives is striving for then she’s content to let the party dwell in the desert for some time to come.

  37. - Medvale School for the Gifted - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 12:51 pm:

All this really means is that Krupa is Ives’ kinda guy.

  38. - @misterjayem - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 1:17 pm:

Say what you will, Kass was probably right about one thing: Guys like this are the future of the GOP.

  39. - DeseDemDose - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 1:21 pm:

Tribune, Kass, Krupa, Ives, Rauner, Trump Republicans. They are all on a roll.

    In response to Butchie… lol?

Those are really funny things to laugh at right? Well, I don’t think it’s funny nor do any other beings Who have been in a relationship and endured this type of abuse . Think before you comment.

  48. - Puppy eyes - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 3:01 pm:

Marty Quinn strikes me as a very insecure and pensive fellow. He puts up a facade that attempts to project an aura of great power and mystery. I think the curtain on the great Wizard of Oz has been pulled open.

“Marty Quinn strikes me as a very insecure and pensive fellow”

Having worked with Alderman Quinn, I couldn’t disagree with you more. He is a man of great character, who listens more than he speaks, and is actually very humble. I am a proud resident of the 13th ward and know that it wouldn’t be what it is without our great alderman.

Assumptions are made and most assumptions are wrong….

Krupa May have a hard time getting a job after this, not to mention a girlfriend….

  51. - Voter - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 4:09 pm:

This kid needs to go to therapy. Look, the new revolution of young public servants is great and all - but anyway, they can get a mental evaluation first? At 17, what do YOU have to do to get an order of protection out against you? It’s also troubling to recognize his lack of empathy and sincerity when he talks about his victim. Oh and don’t even get me started that he worked for Madigan - sounds like a disgruntled employee to me. He’s a looney toon, and what is troubling is that he’s sooo young. Maybe we need to review our education system as well as the mental health services provided and NOT provided to our kids. I am not a psychologist but this sounds like a good example of narcissism. Good riddance.

This idea that the Madigan Machine is being exposed as scared and insecure is ridiculous. Do they need to do this to win? No, of course not. So why do it? It’s sending a message, and it’s not to the Krupas of the world.

Puppy eyes- I’m sure Marty Quinn is just the lilting wallflower you imagine lol

  55. - Windy City for a reason - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 8:38 pm:

I don’t think has much to do with Quinn or Madigan, more that it has to do that the opponent is never the right person. Seriously, out of all the SANE millennials out of there, all the IL GOP have is a wannabe “smarty pants” with an ego the size-of… an order of protection. “Hide your wives, hide your daughters bc Krupa is about to… everybody out here.” Toodles!

  56. - Dave W - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 9:38 pm:

This is all beneath Madigan’s Machine. Wasting a lot of time on this kid who never had a prayer anyway.

  57. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 9:53 pm:

The GOP sure can pick them.

  58. - Whoa - Tuesday, Dec 18, 18 @ 10:16 pm:

Cosgrove is helping Mike Madigan’s main guy in the 13th? When did H-E-double-matchsticks freeze over?

  59. - Pundent - Wednesday, Dec 19, 18 @ 7:52 am:

Not at all surprised that Ives would be all in for Krupa. The only way she stays part of any discussion is by aligning herself with his type of candidacy. Crazy is now her brand.

  60. - GOPgal - Wednesday, Dec 19, 18 @ 7:53 am:

Based on Krupa’s own texts in the Order of Protection it’s clear that Ives & Kass have endorsed a lot of teenage sex. All good since boy and girl?

“Based on Krupa’s own texts in the Order of Protection it’s clear that Ives & Kass have endorsed a lot of teenage sex. All good since boy and girl?”
And the girl has no say in whether a condom is used or not? I’m sure Ives would want her to be forced to have the baby too. Antichoice all around.

  62. - No means no - Wednesday, Dec 19, 18 @ 12:46 pm:

Oh for sure - mean it’s one thing to condone healthy, safe and consensual teenage intimacy but when there’s a lack of clarity around consent and someone feels violated… such as when he took off his condom without her knowing… Houston, we’ve got a problem.

Say what you will about the education system, but he went to Fenwick. Not a kid hurting for resources.

“This is all beneath Madigan’s Machine. Wasting a lot of time on this kid who never had a prayer anyway.”

I don’t see Michael Madigan on the ballot for 13th Ward Alderman so PLEASE drop it with that already! I am a proud 13th ward resident and Marty Quinn is doing an exceptional job for our community.

this “kid” should’ve been praying about learning the difference between right and wrong! This “kids” actions towards this young girl are sick, that shouldn’t be overlooked. he is not the victim here!

Having such horrible habits at such a young age, is very worrisome. What can be expected in the future?
