State lawmakers are often criticized for not listening to voters. But the reality is most voters assume lawmakers don’t listen, and never contact them. That wasn’t the case for House Bill 2864, which would have established a pilot program for a per-mile driving tax in Illinois. More than 30,000 Illinoisans in one week signed a petition opposing the tax. “If people don’t like a bill, you stop it and you go back to the drawing board,” Rep. Evans said. He tabled HB 2864. Not only did Rep. Evans listen to his constituents and taxpayers across the state, he took action. That’s leadership.
