*** UPDATED x1 - Lipinski responds *** Newman puts the band back together

Monday, May 6, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Lynn Sweet

Democrat Marie Newman, in a second primary bid to oust Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., is being endorsed by six leading progressive organizations, with the groups jumping in the race months earlier than they did for her in 2018.

The Monday joint endorsement of Newman from EMILY’s List, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America sends a strong signal to progressives in the 3rd Congressional District.

Democracy for America earlier announced its support for Newman.

“Just getting started earlier is the big thing because that just expands the universe of voters that we can have ongoing conversations with,” Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

In the March 2018 primary, Lipinski, from Western Springs, defeated Newman, who lives in LaGrange, by only 2,145 votes, or 51.1 percent to 48.9 percent, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. The district includes parts of Southwest Side Chicago and takes in south and western suburban turf.

* Press release excerpt

“I’m honored to receive support from EMILY’s List, MoveOn, NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and the PCCC,” said Marie Newman, candidate for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. “Illinois working families need a real Democrat with real plans to make everybody’s everyday lives better. I’ll never stop fighting to create an economy and society that works for everyone.”

Rep. Lipinski, the current representative for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, has made a name for himself siding with anti-choice activists and supporting a bigoted agenda instead of standing up for the real values of his constituents in a solidly progressive district. He has consistently attacked reproductive freedom and a woman’s right to make her own decisions about if, when, and how to start a family. He has refused to sign onto the Equality Act to guarantee equal protection to LGBTQ Americans. And he has repeatedly sided with Donald Trump and his racist and extreme agenda. He is out of touch with his voters and his party, and is not the representative the people of Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District deserve.

* The Hill

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) announced earlier this year that it would not deal with vendors who work for candidates challenging Democratic incumbents in primaries. Newman told Politico last month that four consultants had left her campaign as a result of that policy.

*** UPDATE *** Dan Lipinski…

These endorsements make clear that Marie Newman is again running a “tea party of the left” campaign at the behest of national interest groups rather than focusing on taking care of the everyday concerns of people in the district as I have a track record of doing. This type of campaign, along with Ms. Newman’s hateful, Trump-like rhetoric, her penchant for spreading falsehoods - which she was called out for recently by an independent fact-checker, and the #metoo issues in her 2018 campaign she has still yet to address, will once again be rejected by voters. I continue to be focused on working with my Democratic colleagues in the House to deliver relief for middle class families with better job opportunities, improved infrastructure, more affordable health care and college education, safer gun laws, and lower taxes.

    Actually the 3rd deserves and got the rep. they wanted, by 2145 votes, if she ignores those moderates she will lose again.

    I imagine it’s impossible to pass up another shot when you go so close the first time.

    The question is, will the GOP make any effort whatsoever this time around, or will they just once again lazily let a Nazi claim the mantle of the Party of Lincoln?

    I agree about her being the sore loser. I want a huge fan but thought she might be a better alternative. After that I was glad she lost and I didn’t waste my vote on her.

    I meant I wasn’t a huge fan

    All those groups can and will help her raise cash and volunteers — probably even more so than last time because she came so close. It’s why I’d make her a slight favorite. Yes, Lipinski is too conservative for the district, but her backers are probably too liberal for it. The question is will she find a localized message that resonates with voters? She didn’t even try in ‘18. Endorsements from Jan Schakowsky and Amaya Pawar don’t impress voters in Oak Lawn. If she can grasp that concept, her chances will improve.

    Or Bridgeport.

    Nor most of the 19th ward. Definitely part of Beverly but definitely not Mt Greenwood.

    –Or Bridgeport.–

    Bridgeport continues to undergo rapid change. The Shannon Rovers don’t march up down Halsted Street.

    Wouldn’t be the worst political move ever for Republicans to field a decent challenger here. If Lipinski is defeated it could be a close race. Closer than IL-10 or IL-11 would be anyways.

  10. - West - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 2:27 pm:

    This is shaping up to be an epic battle between the DCCC, Cheri Bustos who want Lipinksi and the progressives and Newman

  11. - Southsider - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 3:19 pm:

    One issue candidates are annoying.

    == Newman told Politico last month that four consultants had left her campaign as a result of that policy. ==

    Actually, the DCCC did her a big favor. She can spend those consulting dollars on local folks who actually know her district instead of the DC group-think types.

  13. - West Side the Best Side - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 4:13 pm:

    Doesn’t seem like Newman used any local consultants for her press release. Lots of railroad tracks in the 3d and Lipinski holding meetings dealing with Union Station conditions are going to resonate more than how many progressive endorsements Newman can get.

  14. - Anonymous - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 4:49 pm:

    Her main issue seems to be a legal right to last minute/post-birth abortions — not a winner for that district

  15. - Produce guy - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 5:12 pm:

    The irony of the DCCC’s position in this race is breathtaking. Lipinski does not contribute a dime to the DCCC and he is not a team player on Democratic legislation. Voting for Pelosi as Speaker should not be the litmus test of being a Democrat in Congress. Particularly not an odious beneficiary of rank nepotism - Dad got out of the way after the primary so Dan could in effect run unopposed. It is great to see Newman take him once again.

  16. - Anonymous - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 7:49 pm:

    According to Chicago Magazine:

    Newman didn’t exactly lose with grace in 2018. She refused to concede to Lipinski on election night, saying, “I would like Mr. Lipinski to have a very painful evening.”

    What a classless sore loser

  17. - Shytown - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 7:51 pm:

    Lipinski’s time is up

  18. - A guy - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 9:05 pm:

    They had 2 years to find someone else. She did prove she could get close in a year that gave her heightened opportunities. On election night, she proved something else. Graceless and tacky. Lot of pride in those neighborhoods. She didn’t just speak down to him. She spoke down to them. More of the Dem establishment will be with Rep. Lipinski this time. Don’t think that district is as tuned into Jan Schakowski as they likely will be to Cheri Bustos.

  19. - wordslinger - Monday, May 6, 19 @ 9:55 pm:

    –They had 2 years to find someone else.–

    Who’s “they?”

    Guy, as the constant walker of the world’s biggest GOP precinct, maybe you should sit out the Dem primary and worry about the Nazi being your nominee again.

    That was a little beyond “graceless and tacky,” for the Republicans to offer up a Nazi as their standard bearer to the people of those “proud neighborhoods,” don’t you think?

  20. - LoyalVirus - Tuesday, May 7, 19 @ 10:41 am:

    I would be sore about losing too if it was to a an opponent who lied in campaign ads (do you recall the circle of smiling brown children around Lipinski?), voted against the ACA, the Dream act, marriage equality & countless other impactful bills & literally was in Trump’s office that summer. I wanted him to feel pain election night too, wondering if he would be losing his job and health care. Oh, wait, nevermind on that last part. Newman is a progressive candidate, there is no tea party of the left, and with support early & throughout the race, this time she’ll prevail.
