Do better

* Speaker Madigan wants YOU!…
I was going to have great fun with that flier until I noticed something.
* Zoom in…
That’s Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) on the left. Feigenholtz was pushed out of House Democratic leadership last year. She was first elected in 1994, making her one of the most senior members in the House, but she’s abandoning all that seniority for a freshman role in the Senate.
And yet they put her in their recruitment poster.
…Adding… Rep. Chris Welch…
Hey Rich! I just saw your blog post. As you know, I’m constantly fighting for equality and diversity in the workforce, and I think we have to lead by example. A couple of weeks ago I asked House Dem Staff to create that flyer for me. I specifically wanted to use it to promote within various diverse groups of college graduates. In my time in the House, I think our staff has been diverse with people from all backgrounds culturally, ethnically, socio-economic status, etc. Our staff, just like the Democratic Party, looks like our Illinois. However, I’m always looking for ways to do even better because you should never rest. Thanks for sharing it on your widely read platform.

It’s mid-January and they don’t have all their staff lined up? Does it always take that long?
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 10:08 am:
There’s nothing on the website about jobs opportunities so how does this work? What is the pay?
- Chris - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 10:12 am:
“how does this work?”
They still don’t actually want nobody nobody sent.
- HA!! - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 10:15 am:
It’s got to be better than working for the Illinois Democratic Party, where you sign up to work only to find out your job involves checking signatures to kick fellow Democrats off the ballot!

Am I the only one who sees the irony in this all-female poster given the latest me too troubles within MJM’s inner circle?

There is an “Employment” link on the top right of the page, with job postings and links that open up PDFs listing qualifications and salary range.

It’s more tasteful than splashing it with banners like “Under Mostly Old Management” or “Now With Less Harassment.” /s

This poster makes staff look suspiciously diverse

They’re clearly trying to woo her back, Rich.
Occam’s Razor, etc.

You’re right. Blue on a dark green background. I didn’t see that. I guess that’s one way to weed out the old timers with bad eyesight, lol.

Who is that suspicious character standing in the shadow trying to gather information from legislators and staffers?
- Sayitaintso - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 10:38 am:
(PS- white males please ignore. Old white males take a hike)
- Lucky Pierre - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 10:42 am:
Old white males marketing to young females to work in Springfield.
Zero self awareness as usual.
They could have mentioned sexual harassment lawsuits are a great way to pay off student loans

Ron Burgundy you’re killing it.
- City Zen - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 10:47 am:
Just in case there’s some confusion as to whom is being addressed, “you” is in bold and underlined.

Actually, a number of years ago an out of state staff lawyer responded to a House help wanted ad, for example, and got the job. No connections. Zero. It’s more common than you think.

Any parents out there who would desire that their kid take a job with the present House Dems?
- AlfondoGonz - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 11:01 am:
I, a Caucasian male, was hired to be on Tech Review as recently as Spring 2016.
Let’s not throw our bloodied bodies before the world for validation, fellas.

The Feigenholtz issue raised is the least significant. There was probably a lengthy sign off process on the flyer and it is very plausible it was put together before she planned to leave the House. The issues others raised about it mysteriously being all women (despite all of the directors under the COS being white males) and the inclusion of multiple women of color is much more suspect.
- Y’all are some cynics - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 11:06 am:
I recognize the faces of some the hardest working people (who happen to be women) under the dome. Lighten up a bit guys… state gov’t could sure use more folks like them

You were surprised to find out that DPI supports incumbent democrats? Might want to look into another line of work. No offense.

Check out the SJ-R. They’ve been running ads for Office Manager/Executive Assistant, Office of the Speaker all week.
- Levois J - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 11:25 am:
They may not want no one nobody sent, they sure are laying out the welcome mat. And they should have someone they want who’s a member of the caucus in a prominent position in this graphic.

Why you hating? Yea, it probably has to go through a lot of sign off. You might be used to a one-man show, but large institutions can’t turn this stuff out overnight.
- dbk - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 11:56 am:
Hmm, I clicked on that link that’s hard for elderly eyes to make out. Might forward to Offspring #1, in an effort to get them interested in moving to Illinois.
The job announcements are fine, the ad, not so much - in addition to the other issues, there’s that awkward “Uncle Sam Wants You” ref, and it’s too busy to draw attention effectively.
Just two cents from a Boomer trying to view it from a Millenial’s viewpoint.
- I’m sorry but... - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 12:22 pm:
Much respect for Rep. Welch truly, but I have to disagree with his characterization of staff. While we all know some very talented women and people of color that have worked or currently work with the HDs, the level of diversity is subpar for it being the Democratic Party. But I guess I give them some credit for trying to attract more diverse staffers by having recruitment material that looks like the people they want to hire. Let’s just not praise them for something they haven’t yet achieved.

If it longer than two days, I’d be surprised.

Isn’t there like a total of three Hispanics working on House staff??
I like Welch. But this seems late (very).
- JoanP - Thursday, Jan 16, 20 @ 3:34 pm:
Jeez, guys.
There’s a white male in a vest in the top right-hand photo. There’s another white male in a checked shirt and tie in the middle left-hand photo.
Okay, they aren’t the focus of the shots, but they’re there.
