Monday, Feb 3, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Yesterday afternoon press release…

Mary Miller, Candidate for Congress in the 15th District, will debut her first television spot to coincide with the Super Bowl.

The ad highlights Miller’s support for President Donald Trump, religious freedom and the recent Illinois Farm Bureau ACTIVATOR endorsement.

The ad will debut in conjunction with the Super Bowl and will also run during the State of the Union Address.

Miller (no relation that I know of) is embroiled in a four-way GOP primary race to replace retiring GOP US Rep. John Shimkus. President Trump won this district by 45.5 percentage points in 2016. She is married to Rep. Chris Miller, an Eastern Bloc member. I do not know how much money she has behind this spot.

* The ad

* Script

I’m Mary Miller. My husband and I run a grain and cattle farm. But the crop I’m most proud of are our seven children, who grew up to be strong, Trump-loving Christian conservatives.

Today, Democrats are turning freedom of religion into freedom from religion, degrading our Christian values and our way of life. That’s why I’m running for Congress.

I’ll put an end to godless socialism, defend the unborn and support President Trump’s America First agenda.

I’m Mary Miller and I approve this message

I’m sure the message is the right one for the district, but, God, who decided to let her open her mouth on camera?

  2. - Deepbreath - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 7:49 am:

She is clearly not going for the moderate voters. While I disagree with every word that came out of her mouth, i do give her credit for being a “true believer”

  3. - Saul - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 7:51 am:

    What exactly is “godless socialism?”

  4. - Hamlet's Ghost - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 7:54 am:

Her rhetoric harkens back to the antebellum South, where to assert that blacks and whites are equals and men wand women are equals was condemned as godless.

In 1776 Thomas Jefferson declared that we are all created equal. Today it’s up to us to decide whether we still believe that.

  5. - Pot calling kettle - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 7:54 am:

I get a strong impression she favors a state religion.

  6. - ILPundit - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 7:58 am:

    @Saul –

When Jesus created infinte wine at the Wedding at Canaan, or when he transformed a few loaves and bread and fish into enough to feed a throng of hungry people — that was socialism WITH God.

All efforts to help the hungry and downtrodden where Jesus is not personally involved is the GODLESS kind of socialism.

  7. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:06 am:

It’s a good ad for the super-minority Trump Party (former GOP), so an A-. It’s well done.

But Democrats are “degrading” Christian values and Trump isn’t? Do these people have any sense of honesty with themselves?

  8. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:18 am:

“I’m an old, angry, rural, white candidate who invokes God and supports Trump. I’m on brand for you”

For the primary, it’s probably a “B” because it hits all the “right” things needed in the times if Trump.

The fact it represents that minority which is a majority for Trumpkins, that is quite depressing.

Still, I do appreciate folks telling me exactly who they are.

  9. - Pot calling kettle - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:28 am:

Do the Millers refuse to accept the godless farm subsidies offered by the government?

  10. - 47th Ward - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:35 am:

I believe that is a terrific ad for this race, this district and this candidate.

And I weep for the future of our Republic.

  11. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:36 am:

Godless Socialism? Does that mean she opposes governmental spending for flood control?

  12. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:38 am:

=Do the Millers refuse to accept the godless farm subsidies offered by the government?=

That is TOTALLY different. God is providing for them when THEY get government money.

When OTHER people take government handouts, well…that is something else and wrong. Really bad.

Just to clarify, when she talks about god she is only referring to the white christian god. Not he jewish one or the muslim one or the non protestant one.

  13. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:38 am:

That ad will certainly work down there. However, I cringe at the thought of anyone raising their kids to love any political figure. We don’t swear personal loyalty in the US, or at least we didn’t before.

  14. - SpfdNewb - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:39 am:

-And I weep for the future of our Republic-

47th Ward, me too, me too

  15. - Practical Politics - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:45 am:

The ad employs a lexicon unheard of since the close of the McCarthy Era.

She must be all fired up by the proposal to discontinue the use of (optional) Loyalty Oaths in Illinois.

  16. - Candy Dogood - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:49 am:

1.) How do you raise your kids to be “Trump loving” years before he became relevant to the GOP?

2.) What does being raised Trump loving look like?

3.) Do Medicare and Medicaid count as “godless socialism?”

4.) “our way of life” — Which way of life is that?

In terms of a political ad, I’m giving this a C. It seems inappropriate and unnecessary in a 4 way primary to get into a contest of “out Trumping” each other and I think it begs a lot of questions that could create some significant issues — especially in a primary where the candidates have zero incentive not to distort their opponents message.

“She wants to end your medicare. She thinks your medicare is godless.”

This is an expensive method to introduce herself to voters and she didn’t tell them anything that’s going to actually make her stand out.

Ironically, I think this language could cause her to lose some support. “Trump-loving Christian conservatives” is qualifying the kind of Christian she believes she and her sons are and historically in this country driving distinctions between sects and denominations of Christians has not been as successful as amorphous and unspecified blanket appeals. I think it also requires the viewer to put their religious faith through at least a subconscious comparison of what they know about Donald Trump.

  17. - MSIX - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:50 am:

Just a thought. Don’t both jobs (US Rep, State Rep) have pretty sweet pension and health plans? Godless socialism indeed.

  18. - NotAnonymous - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:51 am:

This ad will work well in the 15th CD.

  19. - Medvale - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:52 am:

    — Pot calling kettle —
    Remember, “God created a farmer…”

The Paul Harvey epistle made popular recently by Dodge pitching its Ram Pickup trucks.

So it would follow then, that since God made a farmer, it is ok to accept government subsidies. The opposite of godless socialism.

  20. - former state employee - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:52 am:

Yikes, reminds me of Phyllis Schafley (sp)

  21. - NoGifts - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:55 am:

I wonder how her kids feel about her using them in the add…and if they are actually christian conservative trump lovers. 7 kids? There must be one who “fell away” LOL

  22. - DownStateGirl - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 8:58 am:

I find this ad horrifying AND I think it will play perfectly in that district. That is more horrifying.

  23. - Medvale - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:00 am:

Does anyone think she would leave her daughter alone in a room with Trump, unsupervised?

  24. - Bourbon Street - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:01 am:

    =Rate Mary Miller’s New Ad=

I’d love to, but I’m so appalled by the content I can’t fairly analyze the ad in terms of style, impact, etc.

She’ll secure the Art Jones caucus vote.

  27. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:14 am:

=Does anyone think she would leave her daughter alone in a room with Trump, unsupervised?=

    Yes

  28. - NIU Grad - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:17 am:

“I’m most proud of are our seven children, who grew up to be strong, Trump-loving Christian conservatives.”

So if they weren’t one of those things, she would no longer be proud of them?

    It’s a cult, man.

  29. - Cheryl44 - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:32 am:

If that’s an effective ad for her district, I’d like to build a wall around it.

  30. - Candy Dogood - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:33 am:

  31. - Independent - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:36 am:

As a practicing Catholic it horrifies me to see so-called “evangelicals” eagerly leap into bed with Trump.

As a former Republican, it horrifies me to see the party abandon the few remaining good things they stood for and completely capitulate to an aspiring despot.

  32. - Nick Name - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:43 am:

===Does anyone think she would leave her daughter alone in a room with Trump, unsupervised?===

For that matter, would she want to be alone in a room with Trump, unsupervised?

  34. - 19th Ward Guy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:45 am:

This ad reminds me of Pat Buchanan’s speech at the 1992 convention speech. Targeted to a very small and intolerant voter. So sad for the GOP. This is a long way from Lincoln/Reagan. But maybe she and Jeanne Ives can be roomies.

  35. - 19th Ward Guy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:45 am:

    And Trump and Christian values???

  36. - Pundent - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:48 am:

Effective and sad. I’d like to think that it represents her district but doesn’t represent our country.

  37. - SubRosa - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:51 am:

Not so much an expo in dogwhistle, definitely more foghorn quality. But her target audience will be all about it.

Side note: I am grossed out by her reference to her 7 children as her favorite crop.

  38. - Headliners - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:55 am:

Your kids were raised Trump loving? As in, loving the well known playboy who actually was in multiple Playboy and Hustler articles? The guy who was married 3 times? The guy who in the 90s and 2000s supported Planned Parenthood? You raised them to love THAT guy?

    Oy.

  39. - DownStateGirl - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:55 am:

===Does anyone think she would leave her daughter alone in a room with Trump, unsupervised?===

“For that matter, would she want to be alone in a room with Trump, unsupervised?”

These comments assume one believes the countless allegations against (and things said by) the President. His blindly loyal fans do NOT believe the allegations made against him and they DO believe he is chosen / directed by God. So, I think she would have no problem sending her daughter into a room alone with him. She would probably see it as a divine intervention. The only reason she might not would be for Mike Pence-style “I can’t be alone with someone of the opposite gender other than my spouse…”

  40. - Sayitaintso - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:55 am:

OW - “I’m an old, angry, rural, white candidate…”. I don’t know about you, but if that face is your conception of “old”, what would your adjective be about your face?

  41. - thoughts matter - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 9:56 am:

Farm subsidies, state health insurance, pension. With 7 children, did they ever qualify for reduced price school lunches? I’m sure they want their parents( and their own) social security and Medicare to continue. Yet she doesn’t want anyone else to get anything she didn’t get( or even what she got). With 7 children there is bound to eventually be one who needs state assistance for something or who has a family with health issues. Ads like hers tell me she has no empathy for anyone not as fortunate as her.

As to Trump, he’s not even what she describes her children as. But he talks a good game and the wool is over her eyes.

Like others, I think she needs to read the constitution and reflect on what it means in terms of differences in people.

But the ad will probably help her in her district. People have a habit of voting for who sounds tough, instead of who has the districts interests at heart.

I can’t imagine the humiliation traditional, reasonable conservatives must feel these days.

  44. - Gooner - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:17 am:

Like it or not, the message is right on for that area.

Some of the details, including the dog-eared and marked up Bible are very good.

Still, the one issue is the lighting on the inside shots. It is dark enough to be distracting and makes it very possible to miss some the planted details.

Overll, I give it an A-.

  45. - Montrose - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:18 am:

I echo what 47th ward said.

    I also now want a “I’m a Godless Socialist” t-shirt.

  46. - Dozer - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:19 am:

perfect Ad…she should win the primary

  47. - Fayette County - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:20 am:

I live in the 15th and this ad will run well in the district. I am hoping that redistricting can get me away from these Eastern Bloc politicians. The over the top rhetoric gets old very quickly.

  48. - OurMagician - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:23 am:

Since 1995, Chris Miller has received $890,946 in USDA subsidies.

  49. - Cool Papa Bell - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:26 am:

Great ad for the Eastern Bloc. I figure they found their oldest tractor and got the video on a nice grey day at the farm to show how hard they work.

And credit because that Carhart jacket actually looks a little more lived in than Rauner’s ever did.

  50. - Nova - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:27 am:

It is perfect for her target audience, and fills me with despair that there are people who actually belief that way.

  51. - Don't Bloc Me In - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 10:49 am:

As a resident of the Eastern Bloc, I rate this add ‘distressing.’ For most of my neighbors I rate this add ‘thrilling.’

I think we have just viewed the new Rep for #15.

  53. - A Guy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:00 am:

She’s a very youthful and attractive woman who gets a “wow” for having and raising 7 children. From the sounds of comments, she’s in sync with the area she wishes to serve. Nice ad. Nice pace. Well scripted. Is her dialect particularly natural to Southern Illinois? It’s not irritating, but it is somewhat distinctive.

  54. - Pot calling kettle - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:19 am:

==Side note: I am grossed out by her reference to her 7 children as her favorite crop.==

Maybe she’s a closet Spinal Tap fan. They had a song about that…she probably should not use it in her next ad, though.

  55. - NoGifts - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:22 am:

-A guy- born in oak park, graduated from a naperville high school. :)

  56. - Don't Bloc Me In - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:23 am:

A Guy…I believe she is originally from a Chicago suburb. Defining what is ’southern Illinois’ is not easy, sometimes perilous. It’s not as easy as drawing a horizontal line to divide the state in half. But, that discussion is for another time. You will hear various voices in the 15th. Many will be interpreted as being southern. Certainly from Effingham on to the south, her accent is not heard from those raised there.

  57. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:25 am:

=-A guy- born in oak park, graduated from a naperville high school. :) =

    Southern Naperville?

  58. - A Guy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:26 am:

No G’s, thank you for sharing that. I really don’t know anything about her, and very little about her husband, other than what I read here. The sound of her voice reminds me of the dialect I’ve been hearing from Iowans being interviewed frequently lately.
    Thanks for the info.

  59. - Tom Willis - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:33 am:

=The sound of her voice reminds me of the dialect I’ve been hearing from Iowans being interviewed frequently lately.=

That would not be the Naperville dialect or one natural to Effingham area. It is what we call in the business, a put on or an affectation.

    Ask Rauner about it.

  62. - Moses - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 11:55 am:

So, as long as god approves of the socialism, then she’s for it, right?

  63. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 12:38 pm:

    This is such a telling, terrible line;

=== Democrats are turning freedom of religion into freedom from religion===

Part of the thing that Trumpkins love is that being a Trumpkin is like a religious awakening.

    Don’t believe me?

Have we not read/seen/heard… that POTUS is the “chosen one”… by divine decree?

The goal by slandering other races and creeds, and embracing this religious fervor is to be overtly racist or anti-religious zealots… unless it’s Christian-Trump… and claim Devine Right to be… all the bad Trump embraces.

That lil line… it’s allowing far uglier words to be acceptable.

Those disagreeing, well, they are godless.

I truly appreciate this era, as those hidden are now seen.

I’m sure she and her husband send all that Trump money in MFP payments over the past two years right back.

After all we can’t have a socialist agenda that only gives money to farmers can we?

  69. - Medvale - Monday, Feb 3, 20 @ 2:12 pm:

I voted for Trump in 2016 and will again but I think this is the most bizarre commercial I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe her advisors didn’t try to dissuade her from that rhetoric. It plays often in central IL and I cringe every single time.
