Attached is a summary of the results of a statewide poll CHANGE Illinois commissioned which found that an overwhelming 75 percent of voters support the creation of an independent commission to draw political maps.
The poll of 603 likely Illinois voters was conducted by Fako Research and Margin of Era Opinion Research.
The poll also found voters strongly agree — 74 percent — that Gov. J.B. Pritzker should work to help push for getting a question about the creation of such a commission on the November general election ballot.
Additionally, survey results show that in our current polarized political environment, a third of likely voters would have a more favorable view of the Governor if he were to actively engage in pushing for the question to be placed on the November ballot.
The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.99 percent.
CHANGE Illinois leads a coalition of 30 diverse organizations statewide that support the Fair Maps Amendment.
Please also find attached a collection of some of the governor’s actions and statements supporting an independent redistricting commission during his campaign and since taking office.
The poll results have been shared with the Governor’s office. We have asked to meet with the Governor to persuade him to fulfill his previous pledges and statements and to help us actively advocate for votes on the Fair Maps Amendment.

The poll was conducted over a month ago, February 4-6. Mobile phone users accounted for 67 percent of weighted respondents.
* Fako is the goods, so I give his results some credence. According to this poll, Pritzker could use the boost that would come from backing Fair Maps…

Substantive Recognition: 95%
Rated Positively: 39% (14% Very Positive)
Rated Neutral: 19%
Rated Negatively: 36% (25% Very Negative)
The Governor is universally known. His most favorable ratings arrive out of Chicago (58% Total Positive, 22% Very Positive) and Suburban Cook County (46%, 11%). Pritzker is rated more critically in Southern Illinois (54% Total Negative, 43% Very Negative) and Northern Illinois (47%, 34%).
The State’s Independent voters are net negative about Pritzker (29% Total Positive to 39% Total Negative), with Independent men being more critical of the Governor than Independent Women.
Donald Trump
Substantive Recognition: 99%
Rated Positively: 38% (29% Very Positive)
Rated Neutral: 5%
Rated Negatively: 56% (51% Very Negative)
Donald Trump is universally recognized . His ratings are significantly more positive in Southern (56% Total Positive) and Northern (52%) Illinois. His most negative ratings arrive from Chicago (83% Total Negative) and Suburban Cook County (64%).
Trump’s ratings diverge by gender, with men being more positive about him (46% Total Positive, 37% Very Positive) and women more negative about him (66% Total Negative, 60% Very Negative).
The State’s Independent voters are net negative on Trump (31% Total Positive to 57% Total Negative).
Whew, those southern Illinois numbers are bad for the governor.

The amendment plan recently introduced in the state Senate by Sen. Melissa Bush, D-Grayslake, has picked up 31 sponsors, enough to pass if it’s called for a vote. Identical language has been introduced in the House.
But Doubek conceded that the Senate’s new president, Don Harmon, has not promised to bring the matter up for a vote and has not yet agreed to meet with her group.
Harmon’s spokesman said the request is “under review.” […]
Doubek said she’s been seeking a meeting with the governor since last fall but has heard nothing. Pritzker “isn’t living up to his promises and pledges,” she said, a remark that may not help her secure that meeting.
Um, 31 is not 36, which is the actual number required to pass the Senate.
And Greg’s probably right about that meeting. As I wrote recently in Crain’s, the activists need to remember they’re trying to pass legislation, not agitating on a street corner.

… that would be more alarming, since keeping Indies with the governor is more realistic than moving larger numbers downstate numbers… right now.
Fair maps could be more than helpful with these (downstate, independents) groups, but education and higher education downstate are tangible policy things too that can move numbers with both groups.
The 39% for the Governor is a bit lower than I’d expect, but he can raise that with more visibility and showing leadership in these coming weeks.

True, but it seems unlikely to change since he has become the personification of Chicago for them. Any inroads will be small no matter how many fairs he attends or road projects funded for the Eastern Bloc. And where do all those folks come from that would rate Pritzker more favorably if he did fair maps? Probably few actual votes gained (some independents, perhaps). GOP voters might view him more favorably and still vote against him. Dems are already in the yes column. Not a third of the electorate would change.

The surprising number is not the 39%
It’s the 19% “Neutral”
They’re not the phony barkers, they are not committing, and when you see 95% “recognition”, it’s not that folks are turning on the governor, they are sitting, waiting, and watching.
Trump, with 99% recognition, only 5% are neutral.
The president is not only polarizing, polarizing at a rate of 18% under water.
You want all this to seem one way, but we can look and discuss these numbers rationally.

Considering the politics of Chicago the president’s negatives are not surprising. Even though it’s a different job with different responsibilities in a different election cycle I can’t imagine that the governor and his staff are wildly happy with his positive percentage here. That actually did surprise me. (Assuming the poll is accurate which is always questionable, JB has some work to do.)

Not surprised at the numbers on Pritzker. I suspect they will hit low 30’s during the spring session.
The progressive tax approach is an idea that has merit and should stand on it’s own. Having Pritzker being the front fellow on the idea only hurts it chances of passing.

Pritzker has been spectacular for the Democratic base, and that’s a potentially huge head start going into 2022. His accomplishments in his first GA sessions were many, and that’s just year one. Barring some bombshell or big failure, he should be getting huge support from the many allies he has.

I’m surprised by JB’s 39% positive poll as I thought it would be much higher based on comments I see here. He did do a lot in one year, but maybe all those things did not resonate as positively as some thought. And all the while a wide ranging Fed corruption probe on legislators with pay for play front and center. The experiment continues.

It better have some meat this time. All that crying wolf in the 2018 campaign over Pritzker, Madigan and corruption blew up in the ILGOP’s faces.
Plus, a Republican president who was impeached and acquitted by his party without a proper trial/witnesses let a Democratic criminal governor out of jail. Kind of trumps (no pun intended) any ILGOP corruption messaging that doesn’t involve a bombshell.

It is not surprise that the Gov’s approval in the southern part of the state is so low. Just after the end of the session last June I was in the local driver license station. I heard a great deal of grumbling about the many new taxes and fees–gasoline, auto registration–and increased costs for local businesses, especially the minimum wage increase. Our local school district and parochial schools have to pay these minimum wage increases as well. The federal and state governments don’t consider the burden on local jurisdictions to comply with many laws such as minimum wage or ADA. They cost local taxpayers a great deal.
There is also concern for the imposition of the morality of the left which does not comport with the traditional morals of Judeo-Christian culture.
The possible passage of a progressive income tax, particularly with no effort to control the budget or reform benefits (ie, a 401k like plan), is of great concern to middle class taxpayers who work hard to provide for their families and their own wellbeing in retirement. We don’t get pensions in the private sector. They are not sustainable. The state cannot provide them either anymore.

But it’s tough to see a governor, any governor with ethics and morals, concerned he/she isn’t appealing to racist.
