The libertarian-leaning Illinois Policy Institute has tried reaching out more to Democratic legislators since Gov. Bruce Rauner lost his reelection bid. Rauner at one point was so close to the group that he fired several of his longtime staffers and replaced some of them with IPI staff, which did not work out well, to say the least.
The organization’s political wing has contributed money to more than a few legislative Democrats’ campaign funds in recent months, and they were able to introduce some bipartisan legislation last year and this year — although the spring session is now mostly a bust because, as I write this, the General Assembly has no set plans to return amid the pandemic.
An IPI staffer even posed for a picture with Gov. J.B. Pritzker and posted it on Twitter last year. “Looking forward to working with his administration,” the caption read. It’s been on a serious mission to change its image.
If you go to its website, you’ll see the IPI has devoted an entire section to empathetic interviews with small business owners about how they’re faring during the pandemic. They’re well-written, including one featuring the owner of a Chicago restaurant.
“In general, everyone is standing, waiting in the wings until we’re allowed to open back up regularly, which obviously no one knows when that’s going to be yet,” the owner was quoted as saying.
The organization claimed this week in a private Facebook group it runs that it wants the state to begin planning to reopen the economy and “give people visibility on what that might look like.”
But then it tipped its hand in the comment section.
“As an owner of 2 small businesses, one essential (radon mitigation), one a restaurant … nothing I can say will express the absolute disdain I have for this man or his policies,” a commenter complained about Pritzker.
A Policy Institute staffer replied to her comment asking if she would be open to speaking to a member of the IPI team. “We’ve been doing our best to give our community a voice on our site and pressure JB to reopen the state’s economy.”
Another commenter predicted that Pritzker “and his boss lori lightfoot will kill Illinois.” An IPI staffer replied with the same request to speak with her about her story. “We’ve been featuring small business owners on our site to try to pressure the governor to reopen the state’s economy.”
The IPI’s privately admitted agenda did not go over well with the governor’s press secretary, as you might imagine. She let it fly.
“COVID-19 has left a trail of devastation across the globe. There is no country, no city, no community that is immune,” wrote Jordan Abudayyeh. “Every day, we grieve with the families who have lost loved ones in this battle. And we yearn for the time when life can return to normal.”
“We usually ignore the Illinois Policy Institute’s institutionalized and reflexive partisanship, but in this time of crisis, we cannot afford to let this dangerous ideology go unanswered. We all want the economy to reopen — no one more than the Governor,” Abudayyeh continued. “But to suggest that should happen before the science says it is safe is not only foolish, it’s dangerous.
“In Illinois, more than 500 people have succumbed to the virus and more than 16,000 people have been sickened. Those numbers climb every single day and because of that fact, an overwhelming majority of Illinoisans are working together to flatten the curve. The IPI has lobbied for some atrocious policies in the past, but this time their efforts could mean the difference between life and death for many Illinoisans. They need to stop lying to people about what’s at stake in this crisis and own up to the public responsibility we all have to be committed to a truthful and honest conversation about our collective public health.”
Yikes.
A spokesperson for the IPI said they want the governor to establish “a process and timeline to safely and effectively open the economy, so we are not only protecting lives but also safeguarding livelihoods.”
But a timeline simply isn’t possible right now because literally nobody can say with certainty when this will all end.
The spokesperson went on to say that the governor’s refusal to discuss this is causing uncertainty, which is “making residents wary.”
Wary of what, he didn’t say.
“We will continue to tell their story,” he said. And continuing the pressure, no doubt.
I’m thinking there will be no more photo-ops with the governor.

according to a doctor who worked on the pandemic for the Bush administration (and handed things off to the Obama administration which he says took things seriously) we are only in phase two of 4 phases with this pandemic. containment did not work, so now we are in mitigation and we will only get a treatment after 3-6 months when we started more containment. intensive contact tracing, isolation, and testing are necessary and another wave will return. once we get a vaccine (18 months) we contain again.that does not sound like back to business as usual right now. we have to function within the public health practices to contain the virus. Nothing can be even close to normal until we have a widespread testing program with near-immediate results. Right now, that’s not happening, and there is little prospect of it being able to happen in very short term (say two months). Without that, we are blind. We do not know the real mortality rate, because we aren’t testing enough. We don’t know the real transmission rate because ditto. We don’t know the real recovery rate, the potential size of the immune community (if, indeed, there is immunity at all) or anything else that would provide the necessary data to a “safe and effective” reopening of the economy. And the testing fiasco is almost completely the federal government’s fault, starting with missteps by the CDC, but including the President’s disinterest in taking this seriously until it was too late, and including his current seeming lack of understanding of what widespread testing means and how to get it accomplished.

Every credible scenario that addresses reopening the economy focuses on one critical task - testing. We can’t reopen the economy until we can do testing on a massive scale, period. The reason that stay at home orders exist is that testing is sorely lacking. Once you can perform routine testing we will be able to determine individuals who are disease carriers. Absent that what we’re experiencing right now will continue to be the current state. Simply stating that you want to “reopen the economy” without testing is meaningless. Junior is correct. The object of this entire “shelter-in-place” order was to flatten the curve, not overwhelm the health system, and mitigate the rapid spread of this disease. It was not originally intended to stop the spread completely. We could be practical, wash hands and social distance, keep vulnerable people isolated, and still reopen businesses…especially in the more rural areas of the state. What makes sense for the more densely populated areas of the state doesn’t necessarily make sense for the entire state.

Fun reading all the comments of those who can make pronouncements with such authority. What we know about COVID19 is still dwarfed by what we don’t know. We are, thankfully, learning more each day. But if, as the most recent information suggests, vaccines may not work against it and that transmission is primarily airborne, humanity (not just IL) will have to learn to live with it. Fortunately it appears that the death rate is low for most populations. So we will need to understand why some minority groups are over-represented. We will need to determine how to best protect seniors and determine the best interventions methods when someone is infected. We will have to determine what is the proper level of ICU beds and equipment. Because we will have to re-open society and business. That’s not a maybe, that’s a when. Because if we don’t people will die and the probable outcomes are even worse.

1. You want to compare this to HIV? Are you forgetting that if I am asymptomatic Covid-19 and cough or sneeze on you, you may become very symptomatic, at best, and possibly die, at worst.

But if you’re over the age of 16, I think you know.
Right now, all signs point to Corona and Covid-19 as having significantly less strenuous methods of infection than HIV.
2. We know what medical steps need to be taken to tamp down active HIV in a person. Care to tell us how we tamp down a mild case of Covid-19, much less predict who is going to have a cytokine storm, and how do you stop that storm?
3. A doctor can give an HIV patient Truvada for PReP, and assuming patient follows all instructions, patient’s viral load will drop to almost zero.
What medical protocol or medicine does the same for Covid-19?

Which “experts”??? Have you read anything from the experts at Stanford University’s Medical School? There are “experts” that believe we are doing more harm than good with this lockdown. That a second wave of infections will result once we all come out of hiding.
My original point of flattening the curve and the slowing the infection rate so that the health systems can catch up is still valid. Let’s hope testing becomes more available as well, but we must get back to work or there won’t be anything to go back too.

So I went back and took a look at that Morgan Stanley graphic chart.
My mom is a retired nurse, and based on what I’ve learned about science and medical stuff in my lifetime, (around the half century mark), I find almost every prediction in it unbelievable.
It’s just way overly optimistic on the proposed milestones, at best.
I’m left wondering if Morgan Stanley is angling for some type of government business or handout, and they created this graph for the orange monster who spends time at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC, and wields a veto pen.
That’s pretty much the only explanation that makes sense to me… but I’m just a girl, and shouldn’t fill my pretty little head with too many thoughts that aren’t about hair, clothes, make-up, social media, or boys. /s

I’m not even sure what reopening the country even means. Everything is allowed to open then? That’s fine, but it ain’t gonna restart the economy.
Let’s say the country “opens” on May 1 or even June 1. Who among us is going to rush out to dinner and a movie, or a concert, or any large gathering?
Personally, I’ll working from home, shopping from home (for pretty much essentials only) and not attending social events or large gatherings until there is a proven treatment or a vaccine. I’m fortunate to be able to do that, but the simple fact is I don’t want to die. And I think a lot of people in similar situations feel the same way and “opening the country” isn’t going to change our calculus one iota.

Hope? We’re up to 7K tests a day in this state. Do you have any idea how woefully inadequate that is? Opening up the economy will follow adequate testing. Absent that we will have spent all of this time at home for nothing and the damage to our economy will be prolonged and worse.
Flattening the curve was done to by us time to get testing in place, adequate PPE, and establish protocols for contact tracing. Are any of those issues being adequately addressed at this point? Do we even have a coordinated plan to do so? What purpose would it serve to shut the economy down for two months only to find ourselves exactly where we started this? And other what circumstances do you think employers will do this in mass? Businesses (not all) started shutting down long before the government told them it was the right thing to do. Are they going to be ordered to reopen? Will we demand that their employees go back to work regardless of the consequences.

Lynn. Not comparing the ‘hows’. Only someone early thoughts that a vaccine may not work..as to treatments, Gileads release over the weekend was as predicted. Unreliable control points gave mixed reviews. I do know of a much more controlled test on the same treatment that is performing remarkably well, but will need a few more weeks. Even then it is doubtful to be 100%.
My point that I have made horribly, is that we know with 50% of the workforce being deemed essential, people are going to die. Albeit at a slower pace. Somebody, somewhere has already made the decision that people are going to continue to die. It seems that the 100k number, because someone threw that out there will be within reason.

I was distraught over this no-vaccine thing. I was fairly optimistic with Johnson&Johnsons proclamation a few weeks ago when they announced they thought they had one.

I don’t think anyone has ever suggested that is a reasonable number. And, that number has been thrown out there in conjuction with keeping things locked down. So, if you want to say 100,000 is reasonable then you are also advocating for keeping things the way they are as far as the economy goes. You’re going to have to come up with a different “reasonable” number if you want to open everything back up because it’s been stated on more than one occassion that that number rises exponentially if you go back to “normal” operations.

I don’t think Blue Dog is trying to put a value on someone’s life. He is talking about how much we are willing to pay to avoid the risk of dying. In paying to avoid that risk it is necessary to have a value for human life. Everyone may not have a number but the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and the Transportation Department all have one. They put a value on each death. They use this value of human life to justify decisions to impose regulations on industry. When evaluating alternative solutions to a problem it is necessary to know the price of each of the input costs. The number isn’t the value of an individual life, it is the collective value of one life we are willing to pay to reduce a small risk of death. In this case we are asking about relaxing regulations on our economy. We have a $20 trillion economy. If we reopen our economy too soon and 100,000 people might die, the statistical value of a life is $200 million. If 10,000 people would die, the value is $2 billion. In neither case is the number the value of an individual’s life.

If you want a ‘number’ how about when deaths are within one standard deviation of average death rates in a given month? There are some details in computation, but that would tell me we are in control of the pandemic even if it hasn’t been stopped. Now, to keep it at that level we also need a robust testing system along with a strong contact tracing system. So we need to ramp up testing capacity beyond where it is now and develop a contact tracing work force quickly.
BTW, the notion that rural areas are less vulnerable misses that they also have a more vulnerable population in an aging population and more limited health care facilities.
