“I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.”

Tuesday, Apr 14, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Chicago Magazine is out with its list of 50 most powerful women in the city. Frankly, many if not most would be on my list of the city’s most powerful people, regardless of gender.

Anyway, Number 1 is Mayor Lightfoot, of course. Their Number 5 is the governor’s chief of staff Anne Caprara

Before her 30th birthday, Caprara had served as chief of staff to two different members of Congress. She has since overseen Hillary Clinton’s $190 million PAC — the largest in presidential campaign history — and, without the benefit of membership in the Illinois old boys’ network, run the campaign that beat Republican governor Bruce Rauner by almost 16 points. Now Governor Pritzker’s chief of staff, she’s been his point person for the state’s massive coronavirus response. And she’s funny on Twitter, too.

Just about anyone who knows her will read that last sentence and likely think of this

You mean, let me understand this ’cause, ya know maybe it’s me, I’m a little #@&%*$ up maybe, but I’m funny how? I mean, funny like, I’m a clown? I amuse you? I make you laugh? I’m here to #@&%*$ amuse you? What do you mean funny? Funny how? How am I funny?

She’s quite something. And she more than earned that place on the list.

Anyway, congrats to all!

Any additions you’d make to their list?

FYI, its ‘I wonder about you sometimes, Hendry…”

  2. - Rutro - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:34 am:

No Anne Burke (ok)? No Kelly Cassidy (not ok). What about the former ComEd CEO, she may roll the entire establishment down at 219?

  3. - Tommydanger - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:39 am:

Hard to imagine a list like this omitting Lisa Madigan.

  4. - Billie J - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:45 am:

Not a very serious list but these things rarely are.
Maggie Hickey writes a report detailing wrongdoing and workplace issues in Mike Madigan world and is selected to do CPD monitoring and she isn’t on it. There are many other women of consequence who should be on a list like that.

  5. - Oak Parker - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:46 am:

City Clerk Anna Valencia and City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin didn’t make the list

  6. - Annonin - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:47 am:

    No Schakowsky, Lisa Madigan?
No Kathy Byrne — about to head IL Trial Lawyers
Bet Toni and Suzanna never talk with Crains again.
One might wonder why Hampton and not the skillfull flacks who made the tale newsy

  7. - chica1 - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:50 am:

I don’t know if her official residence is chicago or Springfield, but certainly her name should be on this list, as her influence and expert handling of the covid19–alongside the gov, has been felt across our great state.

  8. - Chica1 - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:50 am:

Of course, I meant Dr. Ezike

  9. - Back to the Future - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:51 am:

Not an addition, but I would move Alaina Hampton into
    the top 5.
She took on the most powerful political folks in the state and won.
Personally I am certain her courage and all she risked by being an advocate for change was nothing less than inspiring for women working in government and politics.

  10. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:52 am:

    Maria Pappas?

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:54 am:

=== She’s (Caprara) quite something. And she more than earned that place on the list.===

That twitter, dare I say, “comedy gold”

Congrats to all on the list, to Ms. Caprara you’ve earned the respect of many here, and you have done it with hard work, smart policy and politics, and some real good humor for balance. The hard work now in this crisis, you should be commended and recognized, thank you for working with the governor and all in your team, leading the way in a very tough spot.

    Stay well, keep tweeting.

  12. - Mugs - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:57 am:

Sen. Heather Steans, tireless and expert budgeteer always delivering for the city and state’s most vulnerable residents.

  13. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 11:57 am:

    ===omitting Lisa Madigan===

She’s out of office and in private practice and hasn’t made a public appearance in I don’t know how long.

  14. - South Side CHI - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:05 pm:

Allison Arwady at CDPH really has been amazing. I think she should be included.

  15. - Ok Boomer - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:06 pm:

Chica1 Dr. Ezike is a resident of the 3rd District. In other words, she resides in the western suburbs.

  16. - Tommydanger - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:06 pm:

===She’s out of office and in private practice and hasn’t made a public appearance in I don’t know how long.===

And yet I’m sure she could pick up a phone and call anyone on this list and they wouldn’t send her to voice mail.

  17. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:08 pm:

I get that they want a variety on the list and truly ranking “power” would make it boring, but for the record every female 7th Circuit and District Court judge wields more power than most on this list. Special mention to Judge Diane Wood of the 7th Circuit, who’d make a great Supreme Court justice.

  18. - Steelerfan - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:13 pm:

Roberta Lynch, Executive Director, AFSCME Council 31.
Thanks to her, a fine staff, and a very active membership, AFSCME not only survived the Rauner years and a devastating US Supreme Court decision, but became stronger in so many ways. Tremendous achievement.

  19. - Steve Rogers - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:23 pm:

Anne Burke - Chief Justice of Illinois Supreme Court
Diane Wood - Chief Judge for 7th Circuit
Heather Steans - Ill. Sen. and Approp. Committee Chair

  20. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:25 pm:

I would add Rep. Cassidy and Sen. Steans, with their major social policy accomplishment of legalizing marijuana (maybe the biggest anybody’s ever seen). Women legislators had the primary role in that.

  21. - Blue Beard - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:29 pm:

If Mendoza hadn’t run for Mayor and embarrassed herself, she would certainly be in the Top 5 today. Sometimes it’s better to look both ways before running across the street Mendoza.

  22. - LizPhairTax - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:32 pm:

With all due respect to Lauren Underwood, what part of Chicago is in the 14th Congressional District?

Also, 13 and 8 should be flip-flopped and 18 shouldnt talk to 10 because it makes problems for 6 and helped 1 become 1.

  23. - Been There - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:34 pm:

=== Chica1 Dr. Ezike is a resident of the 3rd District. In other words, she resides in the western suburbs.===
I live in Chicago and I am a resident of the 3rd district. Take a look at the map. She could also live in Bridgeport Beverly Orland etc.

  24. - Leatherneck - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:35 pm:

    Jordan Abudayyeh?

  25. - Annonin - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:36 pm:

Speeaking of “out of office” (an apparent qualifier for Capt. Fax) how about Barbara Flynn Currie the head of the Pollution Control Board.

  26. - Leatherneck - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 12:41 pm:

“With all due respect to Lauren Underwood, what part of Chicago is in the 14th Congressional District?”

No part of Chicago–or Cook County for that matter–is in the (current) 14th Congressional District. (Who knows what the remap might bring, however). Apparently suburban women are not eligible for consideration on this list.

  27. - Pyrman - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 1:08 pm:

    MK Pritzker

  28. - Practical Politics - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 1:08 pm:

Tina Chen? Her telephone calls almost cost Kim Foxx renomination and contributed to the appointment of a special prosecutor.

  29. - John Lee Pettimore, III - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 1:13 pm:

Notably missing is Eileen Mitchell. Former Chief of Staff to Mayor Emanuel, current President of AT&T-Illinois and an all around great person.

  30. - The Snowman - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 1:39 pm:

49 Marie Newman…Chicago Magazine has a time machine apparently, knows for sure she’s going to be elected in November.

  31. - Boone's is Back - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 1:43 pm:

That goodfellas quote is great haha

  32. - JoanP - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 2:15 pm:

An odd list, How are a novelist and a chef “powerful”? An interior designer? Really?

  33. - Left Leaner - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 3:04 pm:

Anne Burke, Steans, Cassidy and Schakowsky: Odd they’re not on this list.

Maria Pappas and Lauren Underwood - both influential and great in their own right - are odd members of this list. Same with Marie Newman - I don’t understand that at this time.

Anna Valencia and Melissa Conyears-Ervin are great too, but rightly not included here. That could change quickly though.

  34. - Sasha Fierce - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 4:35 pm:

Khadine over at the ACLU would have been top on my list for the sheer legislative impact on the state and city in the last couple of years.

  35. - DTAG - Tuesday, Apr 14, 20 @ 6:55 pm:

    Dr. Ezike
