Some people will believe anything on social media
Wednesday, Jun 3, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller * From the Join the Lawsuit against Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker Facebook page… Click the pic to read the comments. Whew. Needless to say, it’s a completely goofy claim not supported by any facts, but whatever. Waiting for a breathless post on Second City Cop in 3… 2… …Adding… From Mayor Lightfoot’s conference call with reporters today…
As we’ve already discussed, that wild rumor about thousands coming from Indiana to protest was all over social media and Ald. Lopez took it seriously. To be clear, there probably were several Hoosiers in town. Chicago would be the closest big protest for anyone living in northwest Indiana. Plus, lots of Chicago-area folks have moved to Indiana and they still have friends and families here. So, that’s to be expected. But an organized caravan of thousands of people from Indianapolis, or whatever, was just nonsense.

Wow, I can take a nap now. I have read my quota of stupid stuff for the day. Is there not enough factual information out there? Is it necessary to just make stuff up? We have got to get better then this.
- NIU Grad - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:07 pm:
Oh gosh I forgot about Second City Cop and what they must have been posting over the last week. For the sake of my sanity, I’m resisting the urge to click on that link…
- Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:09 pm:
It is ridiculous, as it implies. Why would JB send bricks to Reuters? Does he have an ownership share?

I’ve had a real bad pain in my roiters from sitting in a desk chair at home.
Lot going on there. The burden is on the poster to 1.) Prove current ownership using reputable sources (reddit doesn’t count); and 2.) Prove intent (lots of intermediaries sell and deliver bricks). I’ll wait.

Meant to ask yesterday:
Rich, are you enjoying your week off?

===Rich, are you enjoying your week off? ===
Immensely. /s
It’s actually a good thing I didn’t take the week off, though. I had my 14-year-old pontoon boat taken out of storage yesterday, but the fuel pump almost immediately died (I was like 200 yards away from the boat launch) and they had to order a part.

It seems like a legit VC pitch…
Think of it like Uber for bricks. We provide delivery of curated, artisanal bricks for patios, and riots.

There’s so few good uses for social media.
For every great story, some we’ve seen here on this blog, the dozens and dozens of false or fake things spread, rarely is social media the good contributor.
I say that as someone fooled by things I’ve seen too.

I used to laugh, but not after the last few days. As Rich’s headline alludes to, the number of people who believe this crap is alarming — including people I thought were rational adults. George Floyd’s murder and the aftermath have shined a light on many long festering problems, the misinformation and disinformation social media has injected into our culture is one of them.
- LoyalVirus - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:36 pm:
Naw, we all know those bricks were supplied by U-Line
- Back to the Future - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:38 pm:
Grandson of Man and One Man,
While we are all in difficult times, you two sure got me laughing.
The Morans sign link was something to see. The “bricks for patios and riots“ was also special.

Is it just me, or is the quality of the trolling getting weaker?
- Token Conservative - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:40 pm:
All they had to do is read that riots in Indianapolis were pretty devastating. But, that would require reading.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:45 pm:
Northsider, that person is hilarious. Most of his comments don’t get thru (must be in the water in Bedford Park), but here’s a sampling:
1676 extremely intelligent people! (on a post about how Chicago’s population had declined by that much since 2010)
Amazing thing about polls is how phoney they real are!
Bailey for governor,!!! The guy will make Illinois proud!
- Bigtwich - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:47 pm:
You could tell the Hoosiers. They were saying, “Look who’s in the big town.”
- Chatham Resident - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 1:56 pm:
What are “roiters?”
- DuPage Saint - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:00 pm:
Grandson of Man: that is a funny site. Also I appreciate his choice of baseball teams /s
- Nearly Normal - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:06 pm:
Grandson of Man — as a Cubs fan I really enjoyed the shirt the Moran sign dude was wearing. I suppose if someone wants to they could find a meme of Cubs fan who is also “spelling challenged” out there.
- Southside Markie - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:10 pm:
Please start getting the news right. Those weren’t Hoosiers that were driving in to protest. They were Martians disguised as Hoosiers. It’s true. I saw it on Facebook. (For those who can’t tell, tongue planted firmly in cheek.)

The amount of deliberate misinformation is reason #101 why I’m not on Facebook…and you can’t even line a birdcage with it.

It isn’t just social media. The same bricks rumor was broadcast on AM radio this morning.

DuPage Saint,
Thank you for making comment about his team. It has taken every bit of restraint in my being not to make the obvious comments.

And that brief list is why I thank the Lord every day that you moderate your site, Rich.
Although I got sucked into the Second City link…blech. Good reminder of why I don’t go there. Definitely not the voice of the people I know on CPD.

I hardly believe bricks are being sold to rioters and looters; they would steal them.

the ‘get a brain, morans’ guy is a staple on Baseball’s Best Fans on twitter (www.twitter.com/bestfansstlouis) - a must follow for all Cubs and most non-Cardinals fans

What makes this even more hilarious is that I saw a post warning that a bunch of scary Chicagoans were on their way to disrupt Indianapolis.
- West Side the Best Side - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:49 pm:
I know the Morans from the neighborhood. Very nice family, couple of their kids went to school with a couple of mine. They all seemed very bright, don’t know why people would want to pick on them.
- Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 2:59 pm:
Well that’s 20 minutes of my life I’ll never get back because I read all the comments and watched some of the crazy youtube vids. I love how he apparently founded Marmon before he was born.
But the sad reality is that Trump has made all this more likely by his full frontal assault on the media. If you can’t believe anything you read, then nothing is true other than what he says. Ugh.
- From the 'Dale to HP - Wednesday, Jun 3, 20 @ 3:06 pm:
Most of the rumors seem to be coming for cops themselves (in my experience the last week) so maybe we can start there for starters.

I tried to keep up a map of where all the outside agitators were coming from. So Indianans came to Illinois, but then Illinoisians went to Minnesota, then it must’ve been Missourians in Michigan and Pennsylvanians in New York with New Yorkers going to New Jersey. It was beginning to degenerate into the traveling salesman problem (a classical computer science exercise involving weighted graphs).

Nothing has changed. When you are incensed all the time about nothing when something happens you can’t get more incensed. When the dial goes up to ten and you are at ten everyday you can’t increase it.
Anger increases adrenaline, which the body needs in times of danger to, for example, fight off a bear. But long term day in and day out the adrenaline is poison to the internal organs and will destroy them. So I wonder how many people at Second City Cop will get sick and die too young. They would be better off seeing psychologists and learning how to cope.
