Question of the day

Wednesday, Jul 8, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Tribune

Orland Park bars, restaurants and other businesses could reopen to full capacity before the end of the month under a plan approved by village trustees. […]

Orland Park officials believe they have authority to offer their own guidelines for a local restoration of business activity after a southern Illinois judge last week voided the governor’s executive orders that restrict the activities of residents or businesses. […]

Trustees Kathy Fenton and Dan Calandriello said they were still concerned about the village sponsoring the concerts and Taste of Orland, which draws in the neighborhood of 40,000 people.

Calandriello said it would potentially increase the risk of transmission of the virus, and that maintaining social distancing would be virtually impossible.

“People are on top of each other” at Taste, he said.

* The Question: Got any suggestions for rebranding the 2020 Taste of Orland?

Hold it outside block off more streets further spacing between booths which can only be single vendor booths. No live music; hire a DJ. Significantly more entrances/exits which are wider in spacing. Need significantly more porta-potties (probably won’t be enough regardless). Lower capacity limits expand hours, have a day and night pass with intermission in-between to clear people out and re-sanitize. This would be a start but would lower the financial viability of the fest. I’m sure more would need to happen as well.

Having lots of fun reading these.

Seriously, though, would this activity be covered under the village’s liability insurance policy? Given what we’ve learned so far, just seems to fall under the “too stupid to deserve coverage” part of the policy. Or is the village self-insured, and Orland residents just don’t care, they want to send every penny they earn to the village treasury?

If I was a good vendor or restaurant, I think I’d come up with, “I’d love to, but I’m so overbooked that month that it’s simply not feasible for me and my staff to participate”, when asked if I want to join this Covid-19 festival.

Telly 12:31pm. His hopes for being Governor will be down the drain when he gets defeated for Mayor by the very popular township supervisor Paul O’ Grady. That 150,000$ part time salary will stop him from being the Mayor again and the future Governor.
After going on with the taste of Orland he might do well if he gets into the funeral business.

    - Hard D -

Agreed. He got elected by running Proft-produced cable ads against the previous mayor’s pension and pay boost, but he’s taken the 150k salary since assuming office. Orland Park is one of the most Trumpy towns in the Cook County burbs, so I’m guessing he hopes his Covid-denying enthralls the base and obscures his hypocrisy on the pay raise.

    - Telly- your spot on but his base has taken a big hit over numerous other issues he has had. Also the 4th of July fireworks show only had a few hundred people show according to the Dailey Southtown down from the 5-6000 that normally do. That indicates people are very very scared and that includes the Republicans in Orland Park.
If a Republican gets a one on one with him they split the Republican votes and most all other voting groups he loses. Unions, Dems, Females who he has very little support from along with other voting groups he’s turned off.

ajjackson, 40 states now have increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases.

Care to share your ideas on how opening up can be down, without Illinois joining the growing list of failed “but at least we’re open (banned punctuation)” states?

  105. - Pundent - Wednesday, Jul 8, 20 @ 4:00 pm:

=I think we can carefully open up more quickly than we are.=

Nobody has outsmarted the virus yet. We should continue to make decisions based on what the scientific and medical community advise. They won’t always be right but it sure beats guessing.

  106. - benniefly2 - Wednesday, Jul 8, 20 @ 4:38 pm:

Pekau isn’t earning his $150k/year if he can’t get Gilead pay to make this “The Taste of Orland Park: Sponsored by Remdesivir.”
