Your perception is NOT reality

Thursday, Jan 7, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Effingham Daily News

[Rep. Blaine Wilhour’s, R-Beecher City] reasoning for asking [US Rep. Mary Miller] to reject the election results was that he believes the election needed to be examined for fraud.

“Clearly, there’s some irregularities,” Wilhour said. “I think things need to be looked into more thoroughly. When you have all these absentee ballots and mail-ins, it’s going to make fraud easier and more prevalent. There’s definite potential.”

No credible claims of fraud or systemic errors have been sustained and judges have consistently turned away legal challenges to the results.

When asked to provide specific irregularities, or if he personally believed there was fraud in the 2020 general election, Wilhour said: “I don’t have the evidence to tell you yes or no and I never pretended to.”

You don’t overturn elections based on somebody’s feelings. Period.

Are you trying to say that allegations and evidence are 2 different things?

  2. - Ok - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 10:10 am:

And you cannot pretend otherwise. The objection wasn’t to open an investigation. The objection was to replace the result of the election (vote-based electors) with legislatively-determined electors.

I find it funny that these people think a solid defense now is “I just thought it was too easy for people to vote.”

I think Rep. Blaine Wilhour’s tax returns needed to be examined for fraud.

There’s definite potential. I think things need to be looked into more thoroughly.

The people who support Trump will complain about irregularities and fraud even if there are an infinite number of court cases tossed and bipartisan election certifications. They just won’t accept defeat, really the biggest snowflakes.

American institutions—our courts and Congress—have proven to be rock solid, no matter who appointed the justices and partisan makeup. America and her laws and ideals are eternal as long as we exist and will not cave to transient fascist dictators. Kudos to all who uphold our laws and institutions.

What a travesty, the Bears should be undefeated this year. I believe the NFL referees committed systemic fraud through their irregular calls on the Bears throughout the season. I don’t have the evidence, but all of the scores should be changed accordingly.

I have a feeling that Donald Trump should give all his money equally to everyone. If he has so much then it shouldn’t be a big deal. He can always make mroe. Ken Griffin should too.

I love Illinois and we used to travel to southern Illinois 4-5 a year. We felt pretty good supporting this beautiful but depressed part of the state. When I listen to people like Bost, Miller, and this clown I wonder about the population that gives them power. On our last visit people at the wineries freely shared their opinions when they saw people with masks and the Pritzker Sucks signs were everywhere. Their anti government views are so ironic since they are definitely a government dependent region. May find other areas of the state to visit in the future. BTW I’m a moderate Republican. Rarer than a Unicorn

That’s ranks right up there with Kellyanne’s infamous “alternative facts” theory.

Reps. Miller, Niemerg, & Wilhour should take their ‘hunches’ and either a) go to the track or b) hire a private investigator.

In both cases, they’re likely to be poorer as a result.

Don’t believe the fake news media reports that the Chiefs won the Superbowl last year. If you look at the score in the third quarter, the 49ers were way ahead. Way ahead. Are we supposed to believe that the Chiefs dumped 21 points in the fourth quarter when that was more points than they scored the whole rest of the game?! I feel like somebody cheated.

I think one should be very careful about lauding Kinzinger, Sasse, Barr, Graham, and all the other enablers for whom yesterday’s insurrection event was “the last straw.” Perhaps they all underwent true conversions but, typically, all con men (and women) change their story when it is in their interest. Personally, I’m not buying it - all of these guys have shown me for years that they lack any moral compass or beliefs and I’ll take them at their (prior) word.

  26. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 11:10 am:

This whole thing is a sham. Republicans spout a bunch of nonsense allegations of fraud, pass them back and forth among themselves in their internet bubble, then use those same allegations that they spread as justification for seditious language. “We’ve got to do something here, there are so many allegations out there”. Republicans are actively engaged in the worlds saddest circle-jerk and it isn’t going to stop until a few of them go to jail

The sitting president spent weeks riling up his base with lies and rhetoric and called on them to converge on WASHINGTON and set then loose in an attempt to have the electoral ballets destroyed before they could be entered into the official records.
America deserves a new, ethical, honest and patriotic party to take the place of this now corrupted and tainted Republican party.

== typically, all con men (and women) change their story when it is in their interest ==

Well said, WestBurbs. That’s why I really wanted everyone’s votes on record yesterday. Sadly, for many reasons, that didn’t happen. I believe more Republicans would have voted to overturn the E.C. votes if the riots hadn’t happened.

That’s really interesting. Some people are saying that Rep. Wilhour’s alleged tax fraud is a result of millions of dollars in bribes for legislative actions.

This type of spineless appeasement is what foments the anger we see in those who are upset their candidate lost. It needs to stop. One side embraced mail in voting and the other demonized it. One side claimed the election was rigged if they didn’t win and the other turned out voters. This madness has to end, we have to live in a world where we start from facts, not feelings or the whims of one man.

    ” There’s definite potential.”

If that was the same as something being ‘real’ I can now claim that I had great success in dating in High School.

Since the Bears are in the playoffs “There’s definite potential.” in them winning the Super Bowl, which doesn’t mean we need to investigate when it doesn’t happen.

  36. - Amalia - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 12:01 pm:

Ignoring the judgment of multiple legal proceedings and authorities who accepted judgments is very dangerous. There were so many legal rulings regarding election questions that you cannot possibly think things were not investigated. look at the actual evidence.

  38. - thisjustinagain - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 12:44 pm:

That there was SOME election fraud is not in doubt. Georgia’s SOS had 1,000 voters in their primary double-vote (first by mail, then in person). There is always somebody somewhere who does it, and maybe gets away with it. And there are some investigations or hearings pending or were held nationwide after this election. BUT there is ZERO proof that fraud on a scale to overcome a roughly 7 million vote difference happened. These facts make no impact on the “true believers”, and never will.

  39. - Mr. Smith - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 1:31 pm:

Let’s face it, folks.. The evangelical Right is populated with many folks from whom the standard of truth is “The Bible said it. I believe it. That’s the end of the discussion”. They also apply this standard to Trump when it comes to race, conspiracy theories, and their absolute right to power.

Mary Miller and the Eastern Block[heads] are just more obvious examples of this.

  40. - Steve Polite - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 2:26 pm:

    Mr. Smith,

I am a christian and believe in the bible. What is being perpetrated by many of the so called evangelical Right is not biblical. Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” We are to love all our neighbors regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Paul said, “Obey those in authority over you.” Not once in the gospels did Jesus ever mount a protest or riot against the Roman government of his time. He never even spoke against them. He focused on loving, serving, and helping individual people. When asked about paying Roman taxes he said, “Pay to Caesar what is Caesar’s.” instructing his followers to pay taxes. Now our government and laws allow for peaceful protest; however, many people who claim to be Christian, say and do things that violate the precepts of Christianity including disobeying state laws with which they disagree.

It sounds like you’re saying facts trump feelings.

  42. - Pete - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 3:31 pm:

From the outside looking in, there is too much far right and far left. To say no, we don’t need to look into any irregularities is not right. Neither is investigating based only upon what one believes.
Neither side has the moral ground to stand on here. If the election parameters are not looked at then there will continue to be a large portion of the public that distrust our election process and that helps no one on the right or left. Where is our common sense?

  43. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 3:54 pm:

Manufactured grievances by the most privileged can be very dangerous and destructive, as we saw. Yesterday’s insurrection was based on complete and willful misinformation about the election. It was a purely fascist attempt to attack democracy, not based in anything that can be construed as a true grievance. It was quite shocking to watch insurgents breaking and entering in the Capitol with little or no law enforcement presence.

  44. - Demoralized - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 4:21 pm:

==To say no, we don’t need to look into any irregularities is not right==

Nobody has said that. There have literally been dozens of court cases where the courts ruled on this. States have audited their ballots. Georgia counted theirs 3 times for crying out loud. The issue is more people voted by mail. It benefited Democrats because the leader of the Republican party told his people not to utilize that method. And, the Democrats won so they are now crying foul about mail in ballots and their “solution” is they want to ignore the votes. Mitt Romney said it best last night when he said the way to combat this is to tell the truth to people. Some Republicans, including the President, have been lying to people for 2 months. Tell the truth.

  45. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 4:27 pm:

=== Where is our common sense?===

Counts, recounts, 1-62 in court rulings

No fraud, even Lindsey Graham called the winners the legitimate POTUS and VP Elects.

Indeed, where is our common sense?

  46. - JoanP - Thursday, Jan 7, 21 @ 5:35 pm:

The Republican-filed lawsuits didn’t even bother to allege fraud, just procedural irregularities.
