* Hannah Meisel…
“I’m with Madigan until I hear from him that he is withdrawing his candidacy to be the Speaker of the House,” State Rep. André Thapedi said Monday. […]
State Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) said there’s no path forward for Williams.
“Ann Williams doesn’t have a cross-section of the state backing her,” Moylan said. “There’s no people who look like me — male moderates — she has one Black male, that’s surely not representative of the state, one Hispanic female, there’s no male hispanics, also there’s nobody from downstate…So how is she going to appeal to the rest of us?”
Asked if he thought Madigan’s play on Monday was a display of leadership, Moylan said others from the caucus are free to announce their candidacy to see if they can get to 60 votes.
Thapedi, a member of the House’s Black Caucus, said he likely wouldn’t look kindly on any candidate for House Speaker who comes forward now that Madigan suspended his campaign, calling them “opportunists.”

MJM, through his allies, is pressuring the Fab 19 to get back in line. Peer pressure, anyone?

=Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) said there’s no path forward for Williams.=
One path would be if Speaker Madigan released his faction and urged them to support her. Just sayin.

=== pressuring===
The 19 will turn itself from coal to a diamond if pressure is applied.
They are meeting their sole goal, deny Madigan.
Loyalists better find another way.
- Pizza Man - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 4:02 pm:
Look folks no speaker candidate is going to reach a 60-vote threshold as long as Black/Latinx caucuses are solidly locked in with him.
Until and when he gives the green light to release this chunk of votes, no one is gonna be speaker for some time.

aggrieved, old, white male probably isn’t the selling point you think it is right now, Marty. We saw a lot of that last week in DC
- Yeehaw - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 4:06 pm:
Moylan’s second point about the lack of diverse members supporting Williams, while articulated somewhat crudely, is a real problem for the Williams team.
Am I wrong in thinking that a white State Rep from the wealthy North Side neighborhoods of Chicago with (essentially) no support from minority members may not make the best choice?
I hope she proves me wrong and is hard at work locking down the support of Black caucus and Latino caucus members right this very second. But as of right now Moylan is spot on: this is a five-alarm fire.
- SuburbanWoman - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 4:10 pm:
How does this work for the Speaker’s staff? Do their jobs continue until a new Speaker is elected or are they in a lurch once the new GA is sworn in if there is no Speaker for a while?

Marty, my man, you are not helping. White male tears aren’t going to move the ball.

I’m going to be honest. I’m a liberal, and good riddance, the Illinois Democratic party is worse than any rural Republican. I’m not sure how they can be sooooo bad (the details of the corruption are complicated), but I primarily blame Madigan for the culture of thievery that created the current state of our state.

Um. It’s a bunch of politicians. Of course they are opportunists.
- Ferris Wheeler - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 4:23 pm:
what Moylan cannot see is the problems that Ann Williams has with the left.
In October, in the wake of George Floyd and BLM protests, Williams called for an increase in policing on Chicago’s north side, with more police, tactical units, anti-gang units and cameras.
That is not gonna get you to 60, it only a matter of time before Cassidy bumps her off.
Right now Cassidy is probably trying to nail down an endorsement from Equality Illinois and Personal PAC.
The real question is who has the dough? Unless you are going to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pritzker, you have to be able to raise money on your own.
Cassidy’s last quarterly report said she had $30K on hand. That’s plain awful.

This is what is known as a miscalculation. It happens to the best politicians. In 1968, Lyndon Johnson thought that the Democrats would demand he be the nominee and made plans to helicopter into the convention. This feels a little like that.

Wow, this whole thing really is revealing the level of intelligence in the HDems caucus. Apparently that was another thing MJM’s strong leadership helped to conceal.
- Astonished - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 4:44 pm:
Oswego is correct. The 19 do not need to get to 60. They have enough to deny the Speaker. Their only goal.

Why is it surprising that people who back Madigan still back Madigan? It’s a double standard to think “of course the 19 are staying strong” but to think the other side would not. Also, can we talk about Rep. Mayfield’s confident statement last night that Madigan will get to 60? Why is she not taken seriously?

When you’re done arguing with yourself, I hope you come to terms… the 19 have more power in denying than anyone cobbling at this point

I’m not arguing with myself, Willy. Just because someone disagrees with you, it isn’t necessary to deflect and sigh.

Just stop. You part the igop echo chamber. Either put up or shut up. If you have proof of corruption, spill the beans. Until then, carping about Madigan corruption is rehashing the rauner myth of Madigan corruption.
Until Madigan is charged with a crime, or until someone produces the goods, Madigan is clean.
- Toothpicks and Ice Cream - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 5:23 pm:
However, I do agree with you Willy, that the only power the 19 have is to deny.

- SpiDem - Monday, Jan 11, 21 @ 6:03 pm:
I don’t think it’s an accident that Madigan finally acknowledged the math with barely 48 hours before they start casting ballots on the floor.
In the best of circumstances, putting together a successful leadership campaign takes more than 2 days. Under deadline pressure and with MJM clearly not releasing at least some of his votes? Very, very hard.
He knows this. He wants chaos, and is using it as a tool to bring the caucus to heel.
I don’t expect it to work.

@ Toothpicks, I do not. But like any group within the chamber, there are leaders and…others. They are not the leaders. My guess is that the next speaker will come from the Black caucus once either Madigan releases them from their commitment, or they release themselves in the interest of the entire Democrat caucus and agree on a leader from within their own ranks.
