Opponent declares while Duckworth gains more national exposure

Friday, Mar 12, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* WJBC

A Pekin woman said she wants to be Illinois’ next U.S. Senator, replacing incumbent Democrat Tammy Duckworth.

Allison Salinas said she’s running as a Republican, having gained attention for staging “Open Graduations” last year because commencement ceremonies were prohibited in Illinois due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Salinas also organized “Back the Blue” and “Open Business” rallies in several communities to show support for people in uniform and small businesses.

* WMBD TV

Allison Salinas is running on a platform of healthcare, school choice, infrastructure, and immigration. She has previously hosted “Back the Blue” rallies in Peoria. […]

Regarding school choice, Salinas believes public schools are saturated with government and unions dictating what children learn. She would prefer for parents to be aligned with what their children learn.

Lots more at the link.

* Meanwhile, lots of folks were all atwitter about this topic yesterday…

And people wonder why I refuse to cooperate with cable TV shows. I know everyone will be tempted to blow a gasket over this, but try to keep the vitriol to a minimum in comments, please. Thanks.

Thanks for the Duckworth tweets Rich. The chuckles over her toasting Tucker were just what I needed to wake up and start my day.

As for Ms. Salinas, it will take a strong GOP year for anyone to beat Duckworth. And then, only the perfectly positioned candidate with statewide name recognition, LOTS of money behind her/him, and something special that gets the suburbs to turn away from Tammy. Some downstate school choice, back the blue candidate isn’t going to do it.

Why are middle-aged white men so angry?

  3. - zatoichi - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 6:57 am:

Even FOX says Tucker is just an opinion guy, not part of their news division. With Trump away he is struggling to find a way to stay noticeable.

  4. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:06 am:

Congratulations on your second term Senator Duckworth.

  5. - Halstead - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:20 am:

TC seems like a big yapping, weakkneed man of inaction. A total embarrassment to himself and our country. He really hasn’t done anything with his life but talk.

  6. - PublicServant - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:21 am:

Salinas is another government hater trying to get into government to say no…to everything. As previously said, I wish Senator Duckworth well on her next term in office.

  7. - ;) - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:26 am:

Keep it classy, Tammy. Smh. Way to set an example for little girls and boys.

  8. - former southerner - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:29 am:

Friday, I assume you were constantly after Trumpkin to keep it classy. Tammy could either “shut up and be a good little girl” or call out a fool in a powerful way. You go girl!

  9. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:34 am:

    ===Keep it classy, Tammy===

Do you also agree women shouldn’t serve in the military?

    Tucker does.

    Is that classy?

  10. - Glengarry - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:35 am:

    Tammy isn’t wrong.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:43 am:

===“My plan caters to the student, as an individual,” Salinas said. “My plan allows for flexibility and ensures success and mastery of the subjects. Imagine your child bringing home all A’s and B’s! Imagine your child being excited to learn, not just memorize a bunch of meaningless facts. Education is supposed to be fun and engaging, not a tedious chore.”

She said her plan provides the highest quality of entertaining education, while significantly reducing stress on everyone. She said she would work to ensure teachers would not endure “after-hours binge grading” or give students and parents “hours of homework” anymore.===

Maybe she should run for a school board.

This sounds like an awful mailer you’d get during a school board race.

  12. - Hamlets Ghost - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:44 am:

GOP candidate Salinas wants to decouple health insurance from employment and assure that individuals can buy affordable coverage.

I think that idea already has a name - Obamacare

  13. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 7:46 am:

    “Keep it classy”

Woman lost both legs while defending this country.

You think she isn’t classy because she typed, kind of, a swear word?

    Clown.

  14. - Nick Name - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:02 am:

===Way to set an example for little girls and boys.===

So you’re fine with what Carlson said about pregnant service members and our military?

  15. - Ryan - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:11 am:

“unions dictating what children learn” She clearly doesn’t understand how education in Illinois works.

  16. - DuPage Saint - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:20 am:

I am not fine with Carlson at all and Duckworth can make fun of his dancing provide many examples of heroic women including her in the military and show in so many ways his ignorance. I just think she should have used better public language. Think of JFK who could be viscous but could cut someone down with a quip

  17. - Anyone Remember - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:24 am:

==but could cut someone down with a quip==

    “We’ll talk later, Dunkin.”

  18. - Don’t care - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:31 am:

The Dan Proft of Fox News.

  19. - Pundent - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:31 am:

=Way to set an example for little girls and boys.=

Agreed. The best way to deal with a bully is not to cower but to stand up to them. Kudos to Duckworth for setting an example.

  20. - Levois J - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:32 am:

I don’t blame you on cable news. It doesn’t matter what channel I do watch it’s just a bunch of hyper talking heads. Although I will admit I watch Tucker.

  21. - EssentialWorkingMom - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 8:35 am:

I see the troll is keeping it classy this morning. Tammy isn’t out of line with her comment. The kids are fine. I admit I don’t watch TC’s show, but it kinda seems like he’s a Rush Limbaugh wannabe; always trying to keep the anger/hatred/bigotry in his audience consistently stoked, keeping his feelings all up in the mix of things that have nothing to do with him and he knows nothing about; i.e. women who serve in our military while also being mothers.

The Allison Salinas campaign has had their website copyrighted since 2020 so it seems like this plan to run has been in the works for a few months at least. It could use some proofreading though. Maybe with all of the “merch” that is coming soon she can take the profits and hire an editor. /s

  22. - truthteller - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:09 am:

this will be an easy rel-election of Duckworth. GQP has no viable statewide candidate as far as the eyes can see

  23. - Larry Bowa Jr. - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:13 am:

“She would prefer for parents to be aligned with what their children learn.”

If you want schools to protect your kid from information that would conflict with the priors he/she brought from home, there is a simple answer: don’t send them to school. Keep them home and teach them that the earth is 5k years old or whatever gibberish you want to saddle them with, but just leave them out of public school. It’s not an a la carte plate.

  24. - Independent - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:20 am:

I agree with Senator Duckworth’s sentiment and understand why she is deeply offended. She lowered herself by using profanity. Use facts and sharp wit to take down the Carlsons of the world without stooping to their level. She could look to Kinzinger as he has been great at this.

  25. - Cheryl44 - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:25 am:

Look at all the boys shocked a woman used a swear word.

  26. - Blake - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:27 am:

You may not go on cable news, but do you go on Chicago Tonight or other local TV news? The only time I can think of seeing you on TV is IIRC “Illinois Lawmakers”.

  27. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:32 am:

Tucker Carlson is a professional troll. If the media was a park, he would be the overflowing and filthy portable outhouse. It’s best to ignore him.

  28. - Paddyrollingstone - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 9:39 am:

As someone who was named after my uncle, shortly before he went to Viet Nam as a Marine, it continually baffles me as to how or why someone who did not serve in the military would criticize those that have. Rush Limbaugh, the Swift Boaters, Tucker Carlson, etc. How can you live with yourself and that kind of hypocrisy?

  29. - walker - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 10:07 am:

Duckworth is brief and on point. Spoken like a veteran.

  30. - Triple K - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 10:26 am:

She doesn’t need to use profanity to express her disagreement with an arrogant cable opinion show host.
Its a sop to the worst kind of wokeism/progressivism to show outrage by using language of that kind. Not something Paul Simon would’ve done and no one ever questioned his beliefs or toughness.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 10:31 am:

    - Triple K -

Your mockingly fresh name puts into perspective your drivel.

Thanks for putting out who you are right away.

  32. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 10:32 am:

“Not something Paul Simon would’ve done”

Yeah, the political landscape, players, and atmosphere has changed a wee bit since his days.

By the by, Nixon and Johnson cussed blue streaks, just didn’t have twitter.

  33. - Rich Miller - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 10:46 am:

===do you go on Chicago Tonight or other local TV news?===

I only do Public Television these days.

  34. - JoanP - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 10:53 am:

Oh, honestly, I’m not thrilled that she used that sort of language, but I can sure understand why she did. I care more about the *substance* of what she said, which is right on target.

  35. - Candy Dogood - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:00 am:

I wish I had the kind of detachment from reality that Republicans do so that they can clutch pearls over Senator Duckworth’s well chosen words for Tucker Carlson after having spent the last 5 years licking the fingers of Donald Trump.

  36. - Roman - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:01 am:

Call me a prude, but I’m not a fan of the growing trend of elected officials swearing. I guess it’s great for attracting social media attention, but it fuels the toxicity that has taken over political discourse. You surrender the ability to complain about trolls if you employ their language.

  37. - Anon E Moose - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:02 am:

What courage has Tucker ever shown? When has he ever done something brave?

  38. - dan l - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:03 am:

I’m getting in on the ground floor with this Alison Salinas person. I’m her 9th twitter follower.

You can find her at: @Allison81821881

  39. - Rudy’s teeth - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:30 am:

Oh, Allison. All those pesky facts and dates that students learn during their school years. Might be to your advantage to lay off the liberal use of exclamation marks. Not a good look on a website.

  40. - Annonin' - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:36 am:

    Mr/Ms Don’t Care
We know Dan Proft and TC is no Proft plus Dan has a famous partner to brighten the show

  41. - Language please - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:38 am:

Nice use of language for a US Senator, Tammy. You can make your point without resorting to cursing. I realize it is the “in” thing with politicians but really . . .

  42. - low level - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 11:55 am:

    == Keep it classy, Tammy==

But Tucker kept it classy, right? OK, Buttercup. LOL

  43. - Jocko - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 12:02 pm:

==She would prefer for parents to be aligned with what their children learn.==

Heaven forbid new information come to light that might lead someone to question their core beliefs.

  44. - dan l - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 12:29 pm:

you guys Tammy has to be careful. This woman has a campaign facebook page too. She must have serious social media game.

    https://www.facebook.com/USSenate2020/?ref=page_internal

  45. - low level - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 12:38 pm:

“ She (Salinas) said her plan provides the highest quality of entertaining education, while significantly reducing stress on everyone.”

Uh, OK. (Insert eye roll emoji here)

  46. - Justin - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 12:56 pm:

Allison Salinas isn’t the only GOPer to likely declare that they want to face off against Tammy Duckworth, as far-right MAGA hack and 2020 Senate candidate Peggy Hubbard is considering running. No matter the opponent, Duckworth will be favored to win easily.

  47. - Steve Polite - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 1:30 pm:

‘Salinas also organized … “Open Business” rallies’

That tells me all I need to know about her. She won’t get my vote.

  48. - Nick Name - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 2:59 pm:

We have to remember that Tucker Carlson is where he is only because Bill O’Reilly got fired for sexual harassment.

  49. - Veil of Ignorance - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 3:05 pm:

All of this stuff from the conservative talking head world - including Tucker - is about trying very hard not to talk about the COVID relief that Biden and the Dems just passed…and the GOP opposed.

  50. - Siriusly - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 3:09 pm:

As a Dem, my view on Sen. Tammy was always “she’s good, yes I will support her”.

But I was never very enthusiastic until now. That was awesome and I now love her. The Fox Opinion people are human garbage.

conservative or liberal or whatever you are, maybe just try to be a decent human being ?

  51. - Sammie from Schaumburg - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 3:27 pm:

Ms. Salinas: “would not . . .give students and parents “hours of homework” anymore” Hey, that was the platform when I ran for 8th-grade class president.

  52. - Mama - Friday, Mar 12, 21 @ 3:52 pm:

==”She would prefer for parents to be aligned with what their children learn.”==

If that is what you want, you need to home-school your children. Tailoring education to what every parents wants their child to learn would be a nightmare when you have at least 30 students in each classroom.
