*** UPDATED x1 *** Remap roundup

Friday, May 21, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As I told subscribers earlier this week, releasing the new maps on a Friday and holding redistricting hearings over the subsequent weekend while most members of both chambers are back in their districts makes sense and is a tried and true tactic. So, we’ll see…

While Republicans have called for an independent process, spending records and vouchers filed with the Illinois Comptroller’s office show they are also actively working on a backup plan.

The House and Senate combined to spend more than $1.4 million so far to re-draw the maps. In the Senate, Democrats reported spending $557,594.80 so far, dwarfing the $173.731.44 in Senate Republican map-making expenses. Meanwhile, House Republicans reported spending $427,165.77 compared to $260,627.05 for House Democrats. […]

Expense reports show House Republicans are hiring attorneys, redistricting experts, data consultants, and purchasing software and IT equipment — all the tools they would need to draw the maps themselves.

Eleni Demertzis, a spokesperson for House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs), said, “the majority of the fees are for attorneys/counsel which are necessary to explore all different avenues during the redistricting process.”

There’s no guarantee, though, that the Democrats have actually submitted all their vouchers for payment. So, the numbers may not mean that much.

*** UPDATE *** Daily Southtown

Tinley Park officials gathered in the center of town Thursday afternoon to give updates and express concern regarding the former Tinley Park Mental Health Center property, where it was recently discovered that 2.1 million gallons of water spilled out of the property’s buildings and into Tinley Park’s storm sewers due to a water main break. […]

“The Village has been pleading with the state to do something about this for years,” [Tinley Park Mayor Michael Glotz] said. “I cannot for the life of me understand why those with the power in State Government to effectuate a transfer of this property to the Village continue to stonewall Tinley Park.” […]

Glotz said he has sent over 13 emails to Sen. Michael Hastings, who represents the 19th District. Hastings never directly responded to Glotz, but the mayor alleged that in an indirect response, Hastings “threatened” to “cut Tinley Park into five different districts, so Tinley Park never gets anything done.” The mayor added that Hastings said “a couple of other despicable comments” that he didn’t want to repeat.

Hastings told the Southtown that the allegations were “baseless.”

How much grifting is there on the Raunerites side if you spend $400+K and all you’re doing is press pops, even if they are getting the likes of Maxwell to edit the slanting better than the HRaunerites could if given a week to craft.

    Oh.

Maxwell coulda went through the parking lot, but when you look at that open, I mean, tell me the HRaunerites coulda produced something better.

I will be very intrigued to see House and Senate Raunerite drawn maps. You’re pushing over $400K… any map in the future?

  2. - Crash - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 9:38 am:

While generally the map isn’t a big deal (it has been done since the 1790s at least) the one thing that does matter to me is my hope that my part of Arlington Heights is drawn out of Tom Morrison’s district.

We all have our priorities for that map, and that is mine.

  3. - Union County Shoeless - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 9:46 am:

Another missed opportunity to do something different and meaningful will come and go with this remap.

Illinois politics has an earned reputation of being a self serving business.

Independent maps could have signaled that the desire to serve the people has risen above than the desire to manipulate elections.

Again we will be sorely disappointed, but not surprised.

  4. - Norseman - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 9:52 am:

Surprise, surprise, surprise, the GQP is playing the game too. That’s to be expected. What is suspect is that so many media types are too willing to play up the GQP political stunts without pointing that out.

  6. - Joe McCoy - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 9:56 am:

Not garnering as much attention in the redistricting discussions is that county boards also have statutory responsibilities and timetables to meet for redrawing county board districts. The delay in receiving updated federal census data is a hinderance for counties, too. ISACo has offered two different legislative drafts for consideration that would create the space necessary for the most current federal census data to be utilized. County board districts should be reapportioned using the best and most detailed information available. This can happen with sensible accommodations.

  7. - The Dude Abides - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 10:17 am:

The Democrats will draw the maps in a way to insure that they continue to be the majority party. As we speak, in GOP run states they are drawing the Districts in a way to pick up as many seats as possible. Why would the Democrats play fair when the other party isn’t?

Interesting that Rep Ozinga introduced legislation to sell the Tinley Park Mental Health Center when the property is in Rep Meyers-Martin’s district.

LOL… the superminority isn’t know for blazing the scene either.

I mean, Grant Wehrli ran last election touting his ineffectiveness.

Sometimes, it’s not a party. Sometimes legislators are who they are.

Agree with Union County - the ILGA had a chance to do something different with a fair map that turns the page on incumbents choosing districts. Illinois isn’t ready for reform as incumbents look like hogs at the trough.

  16. - thisjustinagain - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 11:56 am:

Dear Tinley Park: Go get a court order allowing the shutoff, and do it yourself. Then call JB, nevermind your Rep.

Politican Reform: “Hi, I’m nobody that nobody sent. Let’s talk about reforming Illinois government….”

  17. - low level - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 12:07 pm:

I wish I was a GOP lawyer specializing in this. Easiest money you’ll ever make. Draw maps to your heart’s content, no chance of their being approved. Get paid big bucks.

====Dear Tinley Park: Go get a court order allowing the shutoff, and do it yourself. Then call JB, nevermind your Rep.=====
Heck just skip the court order. Let them go to court to have you turn it back on.

  19. - Huh? - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 12:45 pm:

“what happens to the boundary for South Gondor”

Draw Mordor out of the map. Easy peasy.

  20. - Precinct Captain - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 1:33 pm:

    Consider the source.

Michael Glotz was the ringleader in a racist campaign of lies against an affordable housing complex in Tinley Park that ended up costing the village millions in judgments with the developer and the Justice Department for violating fair housing laws.

–I mean, Grant Wehrli ran last election touting his ineffectiveness.

Fair… In this instance, it does show more about the character of the individual than the party. I vote both ways my whole life. However, let’s put our outside perspective thinking-caps on for a minute and think about what area and what state we are talking about. This isn’t an out-of-line conversation; this is the reality of policy-makers in IL politics. Problems tend not to get fixed.

Hasting probably runs the same IL Dem playbook each election cycle. To encompass that into this conversation, it’s a governing style that likely advocates for more government assistance to solve community’s problems in order to help constituents as a whole. I LIKE THAT, but…

During working hours it doesn’t seem to me like he truly means that. I bet if this was occurring near estates in Frankfort his response would be different; instead, it is at a Mental Health Institute so there is not a priority. Seems to me more like a guy trying to climb the ranks than a policy-maker, no? So yes, classic Illinois Dem. Having no real path to solvent policy solutions just all tough talk, literally I guess.

  22. - thisjustinagain - Friday, May 21, 21 @ 2:31 pm:

To Been There ref Tinley Park; While the Illinois Municipal Code allows TP to “define and abate nuisances”, they’d be better served by that court order in case the State decides to try suing them over trespassing and turning off the water to an abandoned property. But I’d have shut if off a long time ago either way, and filed condemnation proceedings on it as well. TP has been too patient (and the State too slow) for too long.
