So I'll spend all day feeling a little less like the communications director for the Speaker of the House and more like the kid in Youth & Government who, well, forgot to pack dress socks.
Many of us have been there. But you have to wonder how many people would have noticed if he hadn’t tweeted it out, then had said tweet republished by an influential blog…
He’s doing what many of us have done in that situation: have a laugh and go about your day. Good on him.
Unpopular opinion: sockless during summer is fashionable.
Popular opinion: donate to Illinois Youth and Government, those kids are smarter than most of the eastern bloc and we need better people in government.
Those of us who spent decades wearing dresses and skirts lamenting that we were down to using a pair of ‘nylons’ with runs or none at all feel his pain.

I think even the likes of Dollar Generals and Family Dollars stores, both of which there’s a ton of locations in Springfield, sell socks and other basic clothing, if in a pinch. Same with Walmart too. Including some socks that can be conceived as “dress socks” but maybe aren’t.

I’m done with dress socks (thin, not absorbent)…I found some comfortable athletic-type socks that are black…and no one knows. Comfort rules…especially if you are on your feet all day.
Alternatively, I wear white athletic socks and forget about it. If I’m standing up, walking around, or sitting at a desk or table, no one sees them.
It was a while ago, but I was in Springfield for an association lobby day. Upstairs in my room before 8 a.m. at the Hilton, suiting up so I could speak at 10ish. Bend over to put my socks on and r-i-i-i-i-p goes my suit pants. There used to be a tailor in the shops downstairs and so I headed down, with my suit jacket serving as concealment, got the tailor’s number from the desk, he came right over and sewed me right up. Clothing mishaps, don’t let it ruin your day!

While never having had a high-power job like a comms director, I too have had similar experiences. I feel his pain.

Socks are overrated, but necessary for men’s suits. I have several pair purchased out of desperation. Not great.

In the immortal words of weatherman FLip Spiceland “sox suk”. Flip went on to network gigs sockless. Likely no one noticed

just reading the words “Youth & Government” makes my heart happy.

Mets committed malpractice running deGrom out 5 days after leaving with elbow discomfort, only to see him exit early with shoulder trouble.
And with his arm half on, he gave himself a shot to throw greatest game ever pitched (asterisk next to it because of that lineup).
