After meeting with Lightfoot, sponsor says elected school board bill “will be sent to the Governor’s desk in the coming days”

Thursday, Jun 24, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From Assistant House Majority Leader Delia Ramirez, the House sponsor of the elected Chicago school board bill…

This morning a small group of legislators and I met with Mayor Lightfoot to discuss a trailer bill on the Elected School Board. As I have done for the last two years, I will continue to work with all stakeholders to address issues as we transition to a fully elected board.

HB2908, my bill with Senator Martwick to create a fully elected school board, will be sent to the Governor’s desk in the coming days.

Her Honor is not having a good week.

It was obviously a productive, pragmatic conversation that demonstrated Rep. Ramirez and Mayor Lightfoot can find common ground and work together closely moving forward. (is the “/s” really necessary?)

Um, isn’t that what the Committee Hearings in the Senate and House are for? So impacted parties have a chance to testify and perhaps influence legislation? Or, say, the telephone? Zoom? Email? Letter?

Definitely not a good week for her. Seeing the council votes from this week… haven’t seen rollcalls like that since 1983-87. She’s not only unhinged but losing quite a bit as well.

I really wanted Lightfoot to be successful, but she has been her own worst enemy time and again. The pandemic was a tough issue to deal with, but it could also have been her opportunity to really shine. She has failed, and there is likely no longer an opportunity to turn it around.

Does the mayor have a single ally in Springfield to draft and submit a trailer bill? Does she know how to build support for her ideas?

The 180 on her campaign promise to democratize the schools is part of an undistinguished record of accomplishment. Her public behavior has been consistently abhorrent.

Daley would call the alderman in, one by one, and ask them what one small thing they really needed for their ward, and would give it to them in exchange for their support of his budget. Today’s mayor, on her first day in office, publicly lit into the aldermen, as a class, and stripped them of certain powers.

Her top three EOs in CPS resigned together last month, along with many other top administrators, one by one over the last two years.

She’s built a record that will be hard to run on for re-election. I expect many primary opponents and a run-off that she will lose.

She’s polling well over water, and her constituency isbt about the nuance.

Tough to see who could beat her… today.

    Lightfoot losing.

She’s about 2-3 more losses away from wondering who ate the frozen strawberries

OW, stick to SPF and not Chicago.

So you agree she’s polling above water.

    Thanks. :)

  10. - JP Altgeld - Thursday, Jun 24, 21 @ 5:39 pm:

There have not been any recent polls. The last one I saw was weeks ago.

You said her constituency isnt about nuance. Who is her constituency?

    === - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 5:48 pm

The mayor is in the unfortunate political position of representing the moderate Democrats and the Republicans but whose base is naturally among the progressives, who have not stopped campaigning against her since she’s been sworn in.

That my friends will get you poll numbers like these.===

  12. - James - Thursday, Jun 24, 21 @ 5:58 pm:

OW, I appreciate your thoughtful analyses on this blog. Your point about the most recent polls is well taken. I was just stating my opinion. Time will tell.

    The May 31st - June 1 WGN poll…

    Lightfoot

    Approve - 48
    Disapproved - 38.8
    Unsure/No opinion - 13.2

    So there’s that too

    - James -

It’s all good, and all a snapshot in the polling too. She’s got two years, better or worse.

    Be well.
