Question of the day

Tuesday, Aug 10, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Yes, it’s not Illinois, but we’ve had our share of bad-guy governors, so any Cuomo thoughts?

  1. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:31 pm:

Glad he finally saw the writing on the wall and did the right thing by resigning. Like Al Franken, it’s only the Democrats who have a sense of shame and remorse. Republicans are apparently immune.

  2. - Anyone Remember - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:31 pm:

Illinois has had worse. Suspect that Cuomo’s legion of enemies were just waiting for him to step on a banana peel … and he obliged them.

  3. - Lurker - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:33 pm:

Resigning and no chance of jail time? New York amateurs.

  4. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:34 pm:

He resigned. He should have resigned. He should have resigned months ago.

  5. - Amalia - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:35 pm:

well, not jail time from the legislature but perhaps from state courts.

  6. - SWIL_Voter - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:36 pm:

Super corrupt, should have been shown the door any number of times before this, glad he’s finally gone though

  7. - JoanP - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:36 pm:

    Ciao, brutto.

That “I do it to everyone” montage he did was proof positive that he has absolutely no clue that his behavior was vile.

  8. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:39 pm:

Unlike evil Republicans, Democrats are virtuous and have a sense of shame and remorse but somehow Bill Clinton who did far worse is welcomed everywhere he goes

  9. - DuPage Saint - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:39 pm:

I was hoping for an impeachment trial. I wanted to see Blago’s commentary on Fox.

  10. - Donnie Elgin - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:40 pm:

In a contest between Creepy Cuomo versus Illinois corruption line-up of gov’s, Cuomo wins hands down. Plus he had the potential to be a national political figure.

  11. - 10th Ward - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:42 pm:

Andrew can count…he knew they had the votes to impeach him. This way he leaves, goes to counseling, writes a book, starts a foundation to help women who have been discriminated, abused, harassed and treated disrespectfully. The American public is a forgiving nation. Cuomo will be back. May take 12-18 months but he needs the public attention and his bro Chris will help him fix his image.

  12. - NIref - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:48 pm:

NY legislature should move forward with impeachment and conviction. Such failure to meet basic standards of an elected official should result in banishment from holding office again.

  13. - Benjamin - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:51 pm:

Good riddance. Last year, when people were floating Cuomo’s name as a compromise presidential candidate, I kept telling anyone who would listen that Cuomo was dirty and we should all keep our distance. And I didn’t even know about the sexual harrassment yet.

  14. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:52 pm:

1998 called LP. It wanted to remind you that Bill Clinton was impeached.

Can you think of any GOP scandals since then? Any at all?

  15. - Candy Dogood - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:56 pm:

As we go forward it will be harder for people maintain their political careers or ascend to higher office if their success relies on ignoring their personal actions in order to support their official acts.

Hopefully politicians that are coming up in the world will recognize that as an elected official or candidate what you are doing is still work and the people around you are still employees with rights in the work place and that at some point ones friends cannot over look the behavior if it is against their ideals.

But since we’re on the topic, we still have a member of the United States House of Representatives that trafficked a minor for sex and one of his colleagues that covered up and failed to report a subordinate of his that was sexually assaulting students on a team he coached.

The GOP seem to be incapable of establishing any measure of accountability for any type of crime. They will welcome seditionist and child rapists into their ranks and do nothing to hold them accountable or discourage them and we suffer from this same problem in Illinois.

The Democrats hold their own and do their best to hold others accountable in the current era, and the Republicans do their best to burn every standard of decency and respect to the ground while we fail to address our impending extinction.

  16. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:56 pm:

==Bill Clinton who did far worse is welcomed everywhere he goes==

Your whataboutism is noted, LP. But let’s use a more recent example. Care to condemn the GQP’s King Donald the First and denounce his ‘grab them by the p***y” comment?

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 2:58 pm:

The difference between “Cuomo and Nixon” and Rod comes down to realizing when impeachment will likely lead to removal, and history will remember a resignation differently than an impeachment.

Like… Clinton and Trump are forever impeached presidents. Both, - Lucky Pierre - are “seemingly welcomed”… yada, yada, yada…

  18. - Dosseis - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:00 pm:

Goodbye Cuomo. And good riddance to his presidential ambitions…. I hope

  19. - Cuomospiracy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:01 pm:

He eventually rubbed too many people the wrong way…

  20. - Rabid - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:01 pm:

Out the door with pension, got dirt on legislative leaders?

  21. - Me Three - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:02 pm:

Andrew Cuomo’s luck finally ran out. He was someone who had major connections to fail upward. The 21st century isn’t a place to harass women at work. He’s a relic of the past. What’s interesting is how many media outlets looked the other way on his behavior over the years ?

  22. - Silent Bob - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:03 pm:

The GOP seem to be incapable of establishing any measure of accountability for any type of crime

Illinois made a domestic abuser Speaker of the House, so there’s that.

  23. - Donnie Elgin - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:06 pm:

“The Democrats hold their own and do their best to hold others accountable in the current era, and the Republicans do their best to burn every standard of decency”

Corruption and indiscretion know no party…”FBI Briefs Pelosi And McCarthy On Rep. Swalwell’s Ties To Suspected Chinese Spy”…
“U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham admits to sexting with California strategist” …”Rep. Katie Hill is resigning from Congress. Here’s how the California lawmaker became embroiled in a scandal over her affair”

  24. - Anyone Remember - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:08 pm:

=== but somehow Bill Clinton who did far worse is welcomed everywhere he goes ===

Ever heard of Newt Gingrich, who was set on the path to becoming Speaker by former Illinois Congressman Henry Hyde?

  25. - Panther Pride - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:14 pm:

==He eventually rubbed too many people the wrong way…==

    Cuomospiracy, grow up.

  26. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:16 pm:

The days of powerful men getting away with sexually abusing women (and anyone) have to end. It would be very wrong for Democrats to try to excuse or downplay sexual abuse by saying, “Trump got away with it,” or, “Republicans didn’t demand Trump resign,” and so forth. It doesn’t matter what opponents do or don’t do when people get abused, especially by those in power. Kudos to those who brought pressure to bear.

  27. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:22 pm:

He would have been impeached more than likely. Get out before that goes on your record.

  28. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:24 pm:

What’s with these NY guys being brought down by inappropriate sexual issues - Spitzer, Weiner and now Cuomo.

Here in Illinois, with all the corruption we have, very little of it seems to be of a sexual nature.

  29. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:29 pm:

===very little of it seems to be of a sexual nature===

It’s like everybody forgets about Denny Hastert.

  30. - Irishman - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:33 pm:

    This piece says it all:
    https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/andrew-cuomos-war-against-a-federal-prosecutor

  31. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:39 pm:

I wonder if Random House regrets the $3m book advance. Good riddance.

  32. - OneMan - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:41 pm:

I’m guessing he is imagining that there will be a groundswell of support over the next two weeks so he can decide to stay.

  33. - Al - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:42 pm:

Wonder how many women said “yes”? I never liked his father either from a policy point of view but I conceed his dad was a great orator.

  34. - JoanP - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:44 pm:

= I wanted to see Blago’s commentary on Fox. =

That would have been . . . interesting.

= NY legislature should move forward with impeachment and conviction. =

They’ve got two weeks. You can’t impeach someone who is no longer in office.

  35. - Huh? - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:45 pm:

==He eventually rubbed too many people the wrong way…==

No conspiracy involved. Because he couldn’t keep his hands to himself, he really did rub too many people (women) the wrong way.

  36. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:47 pm:

    - Al -

First “illegal Mexican girls”… now that?

    You’re on quite a roll today…

  37. - Proud Sucker - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 3:58 pm:

I sense quite a bit of strategic realization here. If he stayed through impeachment, all the proceedings would likely be admissible in the criminal case which was filed. This way, he can play dumb all the way through his trial.

  38. - City Guy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:13 pm:

Years ago I remember hearing people say “the better you know him, the less you like him.”

  39. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:19 pm:

How quickly fortunes change; remember when Cuomo was being lauded for NY’s handling of Covid? Just like Blagojovich, we have not heard the last of him.

  40. - 32nd Ward Roscoe Village - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:23 pm:

==Out the door with pension, got dirt on legislative leaders?==

This article was interesting on the subject: https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/andrew-cuomos-war-against-a-federal-prosecutor

  41. - 32nd Ward Roscoe Village - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:23 pm:

Sorry, I see Irishman already posted the New Yorker piece link.

  42. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:27 pm:

Tina Tchen is the Kevin Bacon of political scandals.

  43. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:35 pm:

A friend of mine raised this question (and yes, I did try asking the google machine first). So now I’ll crowdsource — how far back do these allegations go? Usually men don’t adopt this type of behavior suddenly in middle age. Are there previous cases likely to come out of the woodwork, or did the guy just lose his damn mind a few years ago?

  44. - All this - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:35 pm:

“Illinois made a domestic abuser Speaker of the House, so there’s that.”
    This has never been proven.

  45. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:43 pm:

    ===This has never been proven.===

At sentencing… Judge Durkin made Hastert admit what he did to his victims… and Hastert admitted during that sentencing.

    You probably know that

  46. - PublicServant - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:49 pm:

We pursue our violators, unlike the right wing, who venerate them.

  47. - JoanP - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:52 pm:

    @OW -

Pretty sure Silent Bob and All this were referring to Chris Welch, not Hastert.

Hastert’s crimes were not “domestic” abuse.

  48. - Frumpy White Guy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:53 pm:

Hormone replacement at birth. I swear the only way we are going to end white male toxic masculinity is medically.

  49. - Responsa - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:56 pm:

    cleanup on aisle frumpy

  50. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 4:57 pm:

    - JoanP -

    My bad. Apologies.

Also, I stand by my comment

Stay cool. It’s a scorcher out there

  51. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 5:03 pm:

    ===Republicans are apparently immune.===

Republicans like it when their pols are predators.

  52. - Captain Obvious - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 5:06 pm:

Well Biden thinks he’s done a “hxxx of job, but I would disagree. Were he not run out of office for being a perv, he should have been run out for killing all those folks in nursing homes.

  53. - JoanP - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 5:09 pm:

    = Stay cool. It’s a scorcher out there =

We’re also under a severe thunderstorm watch in Chicago.

Just your typical summer weather here.

  54. - Out of Illinois - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 5:42 pm:

Can we get a 2 for 1 and get rid of his younger brother as well? He might be more obnoxious than his brother.

  55. - Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 5:47 pm:

==He eventually rubbed too many people the wrong way…==
I think that’s what did him in. Got to ask permission before rubbing, right way or wrong.

  56. - FormerParatrooper - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 6:24 pm:

Cuomo didn’t seem to hide his “friendliness”, but he doesn’t take ownership that his actions were wrong. Just like Blago without the children’s hospital shakedown.

They say power corrupts, but is that true? Could it be the corrupt seek power? The political class seems to epitomize corruption to power.

  57. - one of the 35 - Tuesday, Aug 10, 21 @ 8:48 pm:

Are we 100% certain that Cuomo was not born in Illinois?

  58. - Mason born - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 5:31 am:

Cuomo has had this coming a long time. His arrogance should of been a tell honestly.

As for parties jettisoning toxic people it sure seems that it’s highly relative to wether it benefits their opponents. Dems can rid themselves of the jerk Cuomo without the slightest worry that R’s will gain an advantage. I suspect NY were a competitive state like VA less fervor would be found. That is certainly not a traight singular to any one party. For instance easy to replace a Greitens if his replacement is likely to win next election.

  59. - The Dude - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 6:47 am:

    Good riddance.

I think his brother should go too and CNN has some explaining to do as to how they allowed Chris to speak about and to his brother on air.

  60. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 6:52 am:

“As for parties jettisoning toxic people it sure seems that it’s highly relative to whether it benefits their opponents.”

Aren’t all lieutenant governors the same party?

  61. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 8:34 am:

And, good riddance to Cuomo. I personally do not like these political legacy family deals at all.

  62. - Suburban Mom - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 9:28 am:

Proving once again that men as a group as too impulsive and emotional to hold positions of authority.
