Question of the day

Wednesday, Aug 11, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* ABC News

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 1 million people who have received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine have gone back for an unauthorized third booster shot.

Florida is among the states reporting the highest number of people opting for a booster shot, followed by Ohio, California, Illinois and Tennessee.

The estimated 1.1 million, included in an internal CDC briefing document reviewed by ABC News, likely is an undercount because although it counts Moderna and Pfizer shot recipients it ignores people who may have received the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine and got another shot.

* The Question: Did you already get a booster shot or do you plan to in the future? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please…

  1. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:04 am:

I’ll wait until my physician recommends a booster, which I expect will be yearly, like the flu shot.

  2. - Huh? - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:05 am:

Yes, if CDC and doctor recommend a booster.

  3. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:07 am:

Yes, if recommended by the CDC/medical provider.

  4. - Rayne of Terror - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:08 am:

I’ll for sure get one if that becomes a thing, but not now. I know two immune compromised people with transplant organs who have gone for boosters because they are following the news out of France re: transplant healthcare and covid.

  5. - NIU Grad - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:09 am:

I get a flu shot every year that is customized to fight the dominant flu variant of the year…I don’t see why a vaccine booster shot is any different, besides the “politics” of it.

  6. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:10 am:

I got the one-shot J&J vaccine. I most likely will add a booster if/when available.

  7. - HCMcB4 - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:11 am:

When it’s recommended, I’ll absolutely get a 3rd Moderna shot.

  8. - Cool Papa Bell - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:13 am:

Double vaxxed on Pfizer. Trending data coming out right now shows Moderna the better of the two vs Delta.

Will be looking around by late fall if FDA doesn’t act.

  9. - wildcat12 - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:15 am:

Only voted no because I will wait until it is recommended. If/once it’s recommended, I’ll get them yearly if need be.

  10. - Original Rambler - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:16 am:

Voted no since got Pfizer and not recommended…yet. I will listen to the experts at the CDC.

  11. - Big Jer - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:18 am:

I voted plan to but it is more “maybe”.

My thought process is that all the vaccines were developed so quickly that revised i.e.improved versions will be needed. That is part of the scientific method. The first scientist starts the process and then they and others learn more and revise their findings. So many people think scientists, etc. should cover everything on the first try. That is not how it works. Viruses mutate, adapt, and learn, hence the Delta variant. Viruses mutate, adapt, and learn especially when you don’t kill it when you had the chance and let it linger.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:22 am:

My plan is to be ready and aware if/when boosters are recommended and available… and to get one once I am eligible.

  13. - JoanP - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:22 am:

    I’m a “Plan to if it’s recommended”, so I guess that’s a “Maybe”.

  14. - Froganon - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:23 am:

I plan to get a booster in the late Fall. I’ll follow the CDC recommendations.

  15. - Seats - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:24 am:

Once it is officially recommended by the CDC I will get one. I’m not autoimmune compromised so i’m not convinced the CDC plans to recommend it anytime soon though.

  16. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:25 am:

I would like to. I got my original two Pfizers at the Orr Building. Will the fairgrounds clinic allow me to get my booster shot even before CDC approval, or do I have to go elsewhere?

  17. - Tommydanger - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:25 am:

Plan to when its recommended and available. I don’t plan to lie or jump the line before its recommended for me to receive the booster for my age and health.

  18. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:27 am:

And eventually I would think that COVID vaccine chemicals will be mixed into the annual flu shots which I receive each fall. (IIRC swine flu vaccine formula was added in 2009 to the flu shots after that year’s outbreak).

  19. - RNUG - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:31 am:

No for now. Moderna, last I saw, wasn’t recommending it.

  20. - Fav Human - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:32 am:

I got Moderna, so I dont feel the need of it.

And, frankly, I’ll see what my local doctor recommends.

  21. - Nearly Normal - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:32 am:

I get an annual flu shot so will treat the booster the same.

  22. - DuPage Saint - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:35 am:

I will if recommended. How do you even get an unauthorized booster shot? Is it free? Do you just walk in and they give it to you? Do you lie and say you never had a shot?

  23. - Langhorne - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:42 am:

Plan to at first opportunity, once a booster is recommended and made available to me. Moderna.

  24. - Anotheretiree - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:43 am:

==Dupage== Yes, people are lying about having gotten their first shot. I will consider doing that if no authorization by Winter and the Delta or Desantis variant is raging. Other countries have already authorized third shots. We tend to move slower.

  25. - Club J - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:44 am:

I voted NO. I’ll wait until my Doctor says to get a booster. I got my shot the end of March so I’d think I’m good for now.

  26. - wayward - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:45 am:

Was tempted to see if I could get a shot that would have otherwise gone to waste as a third dose, but local public health director said not to do that. So I’ll wait to see what CDC says.

  27. - Bruce( no not him) - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:46 am:

I’ll get one when the Facebook epidemiologists who barely graduated high school tell me to. I’m looking at you, Darren Bailey.

  28. - Chuck - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:46 am:

Need an option for “Will get one if recommended.” That’s my plan.

  29. - Zim - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:46 am:

Voted yes since I plan to if recommended by the CDC.

  30. - Mason born - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:53 am:

I’ll get one if my MD, CDC or Moderna tell me I need it. Otherwise no.

  31. - cermak_rd - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 11:54 am:

I voted no, because it is not recommended by CDC now. When it is, I will get one at the earliest opportunity. I don’t mind if it’s a yearly thing. This COVIDtide has taught me the importance of flu shots as well.

  32. - PublicServant - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:04 pm:

I voted “plan to”, but what I’m wondering is whether the booster will be just a third shot of the original vaccine, or will it be tweaked like my annual flu shot to better fight the delta variant?

  33. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:05 pm:

I voted no. I would gladly get one if recommended. I would likely get an antibody test first.

  34. - Benjamin - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:08 pm:

Haven’t done so yet, but am happy to do so when the CDC advises it. Until then, I’m not going to play Monday morning epidemiologist.

  35. - Smalls - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:24 pm:

I received the one shot J&J back in March, and am also immunocompromised. I talked with my doctor about it, and he recommended I get a Pfizer booster now. Unfortunately, the only way to go about doing that is to say you haven’t been vaccinated previously.

  36. - DuPage - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:27 pm:

Yes, especially if the updated shots they are working on become available. The updated will include the variants. They are saying it might become a yearly booster like the flu shot, or even combined in one shot.

  37. - thunderspirit - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:30 pm:

Plan to, when the CDC/my doctor recommend one. Until then, no.

  38. - Leslie K - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:39 pm:

Voted no, but only because it isn’t recommended yet. Will get in line when it is, however. Especially if the booster is a tweak for the new variants.

  39. - John Presta - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:44 pm:

I answered “no” but with the caveat that if a booster is recommended by the CDC and/or my family doctor, I will do so. To merely get a booster shot without the blessing of the health professionals doesn’t work for me.

  40. - Norseman - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 12:52 pm:

#4 Haven’t got it, but will take it when recommended.

I support the reasons for not jumping the gun. To address breakthrough concern, I’m wearing my mask and going back to earlier social distancing behavior.

  41. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:09 pm:

Nope. Not until cdc/medical experts advise it. Then will be ß front of the line.

  42. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:09 pm:

I voted yes for 5he same reasons others voted no. I’ll do it when it’s recommended by my doctor.

  43. - CK - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:19 pm:

I was wondering the other day if people could get a booster. I would like one, but since I don’t think we really are supposed to be doing that yet, I will wait for official approval.

  44. - Groucho - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:27 pm:

I did not know that a booster was an option. I will be first in line if it is.

  45. - Former Bartender - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:28 pm:

Voted no but like others here, will get it if recommended.

  46. - thisjustinagain - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:29 pm:

Plan to get any and all boosters once the science is clarified behind needing boosters or cross-vaccine shots (I had Pfizer). I just finished mine in mid-May of 2021, so I shouldn’t be rushing the line when others haven’t even gotten first shots.

  47. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:39 pm:

Will get one if its recommended.

  48. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 1:41 pm:

Like we did with the first round, we will wait for Docs to call and whistle us in

  49. - Annon3 - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 2:12 pm:

When my oncologist recommends it I will.

  50. - Nick Name - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 2:13 pm:

Fully vaccinated since April. No plans to get a booster shot unless recommended by the CDC.

  51. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 3:02 pm:

I will get a booster shot if it’s recommended.

  52. - Amalia - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 3:04 pm:

Got my 2 shots and will get a booster when they recommend. probably will become an annual thing. just heard the head of the American Heart Association urge everyone to get a flu shot this year, so put that on the vax list too.

  53. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 3:32 pm:

Had second Moderna in Feb at local hospital. When CDC and Pub Health recommend boosters we will get them.

  54. - Ben Tre - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 3:41 pm:

NO! World Health Organization is urging people not to get a booster shot so that more shots are available for unvaccinated people worldwide. Following their advice seems both ethical and self-interested, as getting more people vaccinated is critical to beating COVID.

  55. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 3:48 pm:

I voted “plan to” as I expect that at some point it will be needed and recommended.

  56. - Snarkie from Schaumburg - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 4:03 pm:

Yes, if recommended by CDC. And when I return to eating in restaurants I will ask for a booster seat.

  57. - Mama - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 4:50 pm:

Once CDC recommends getting a booster and the booster shots become available, I’ll be there with my sleeve up rolled up.

  58. - Trying to Be Rational - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 5:33 pm:

My pharmacist said it is illegal to get additional shots beyond being fully vaccinated.

She said insurance won’t pay for additional shots once you’re fully vaccinated. And that federal law prohibits paying for a shot out of pocket.

I did not ask her to prove what she was saying. I also did not ask about special medical cases. My doctor said to just sit tight and wait for a booster when it is offered.

  59. - RNUG - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 6:17 pm:

Was just reading the results on a Canadian study of a 3rd dose of Moderna for immunocompromised people such as transplant, cancer, and assorted degenerative diseases. It shows some benefit to a 3rd dose of the immune system is weak, but it also says to test the antibody levels first and only get the 3rd shot if low.

  60. - Jaguar - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 7:07 pm:

If they recommend one for the Pfizer vaccine, I’ll get the booster.

  61. - Coco - Wednesday, Aug 11, 21 @ 8:53 pm:

I voted no, that I have no plans to, however having had the Pfizer vaccine, if it’s recommended, I will get it. Heck, I’ll get 10 booster shots if it means I can stop wearing a mask. I wear one now, mainly for my daughter, who can’t get vaccinated.
