A quick Illinois Republican Day roundup
Thursday, Aug 19, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller * Some may have been uncomfortable, but nobody said anything to disavow this guy’s “jokes.” State party chair Don Tracy told reporters afterward that he doesn’t like fat jokes and he doesn’t like face jokes, but wouldn’t go any further than that…
In general, it’s a good idea to leave the jokes to comedians. Also, maybe vet the speeches beforehand? Sheesh. Along those lines, US Rep. Mary Miller avoided saying anything goofy today, so that’s a plus. She spent most of her time talking about a school board race in Tennessee, however. Miller (no relation) rarely ever talks about her own district. * More from the show…

The “How about that, huh?” is an indicator that he wasn’t getting too many laughs…but I’d be curious how much he was getting from the crowd.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:38 pm:
Not a soul stopped the jokes, not a one disavowed the “comedian”…
Tracy already told me… in his remarks after becoming Chair
===So, whatever your political leanings, wherever you live - if you want to fight corruption, restore fiscal sanity, grow our economy, and stand for law and order - you’re on our team. It’s time to suit up, work together, and bring home some wins for the people of Illinois.”===
So we can add tasteless jokesters to racists, insurrectionists, and conspiracy theorists.
See, they’re telling us who they are. I’m not shocked that the “set” was at minimum “tasteless”… talk to an “in-law” uncle or check his “Facerbooker” or “instagramering”
They love these jokes, you love your favorite aunt.
What a total disgrace of a party function
- Techie - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:40 pm:
I don’t know who was in attendance, but those kinds of jokes are very standard fare for Republicans/right-wingers I know. Perhaps some of them looked uncomfortable simply because they didn’t want to be seen looking amused in public?
- Stagman - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:41 pm:
Its hard to believe Paul lost the mayoral race in 2015
- Moe Berg - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:46 pm:
The Cruelty Is the Point.
President Trump and his supporters find community by rejoicing in the suffering of those they hate and fear.

- Crash - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:47 pm:
For those keeping score at home, when the GOP stopped being the party of Mark Kirk and instead became the party of the likes of Palozzolo is when the GOP became the party nearly unable to compete statewide.
- uialum - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:53 pm:
Don Tracy’s new standard: no fat jokes or face jokes but people who praise Hitler and opposed recognizing the bravery of the Capitol Police should come right up to the microphone!
- OneMan - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:53 pm:
You have to wonder the thinking here, if there was any.
Was this some sort of ploy on his part knowing that his ‘routine’ would end up as the story coming out of Republican day at the fair. A chance to make this about him an appeal to the crowd who finds this interesting/funny political discourse.
Or
Was he so unaware that this was going to bomb because he thinks this is what Republicans want to hear?
I’m gonna go with the second option which is just as embarrassing as the first.
- FIREDup!! - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:55 pm:
Did they let Rep. Butler speak? Or is he now ostracized for telling them all to get vaccinated?
- Grandson of Man - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 2:58 pm:
“GOP stopped being the party of Mark Kirk”
Also of Jim Edgar, Jim Thompson, JBT, Richard Ogilvie, et al.
- Chicago Cynic - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:00 pm:
Sounds like pretty standard GOP crapola. When you have no ideas, you come up with stuff like this.
- Rudy’s teeth - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:02 pm:
Very weak sauce. If I were Palazzolo, I wouldn’t quit the day job and hit the club circuit. He’s no George Carlin.
Palazzolo should stick to calling Bingo numbers at the local VFW.
- Independent - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:03 pm:
Real entertainment would have been Kinzinger crashing the party.
- EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:09 pm:
==“GOP stopped being the party of Mark Kirk”
Also of Jim Edgar, Jim Thompson, JBT, Richard Ogilvie, et al.==
And of George Ryan.
- Sir Reel - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:13 pm:
Class act
- Henry Francis - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:14 pm:
Well, this Palazzolo fellow makes Darren Bailey seem like a decent guy in comparison. Maybe that was the plan?
- B Team - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:15 pm:
So this Paul Palazzolo is the Sangamon County Circuit Clerk, apparently heavily involved with the Sangamon County GOP, and serves as campaign chairman for State Senator Steve McClure. Waiting for the backpedaling…
- Blue Sangamon - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:17 pm:
—-Unknown emcee—-
Unknown emcee?? He’s a legend, just ask him.
- Dance Band on the Titanic - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:19 pm:
I see the GOP had no problem social distancing at their event.
- Rudy’s teeth - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:30 pm:
Palazzolo missed his opportunity. Dark blue suit, white shirt, red tie, and a Donald wig.
Since he has quite the girth, Palazzolo could be a body double for you- know-who.
- Lurker - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:32 pm:
As a Republican, I disliked Tracy less for the 50 years I knew him as a Democrat
- Candy Dogood - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:36 pm:
===the GOP welcomes disenfranchised Democrats ===
Fun statement form a guy that represents a party that is literally trying to take the right to vote away from people as an electoral strategy.
- Crash - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:38 pm:
Grandson of Man, exactly what I was thinking.
One more note:
Palozzolo comments about Speaker Pelosi, and then the party collectively scratches its head wondering why the gender gap exists.
- Lt Guv - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:38 pm:
Just as predicted. . . toddlers throwing a tantrum.
- Norseman - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:39 pm:
This speech was true to today’s GOP motto:
- Pundent - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:44 pm:
Not much that can be said about this. But if the goal is to expand the reach of the ILGOP this doesn’t accomplish that. Probably worth making note of when we hear the inevitable excuses in 2022.
- Kayak - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:47 pm:
Gross
- Arsenal - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 3:58 pm:
Man, the ultimate indignity is that Palazzolo got called “unknown emcee”. That’s gotta sting.
- don the legend - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 4:24 pm:
I’m sure Palazzolo’s in laws are pleased. They own a 100+ year old funeral home business.
Also the guy is in charge of making sure orders of protection are issued and he makes jokes about peeping toms and Cuomo.
Clueless and arrogant.
- Just Me 2 - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 4:27 pm:
I’m happy they were able to have a very strong policy discussion.
- The Dude Abides - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 4:29 pm:
Palazzolo is just a crude and rude person, not funny at all. The party of Edgar & Big Jim is no more. JB should cruise to another term.
- Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 4:50 pm:
“And of George Ryan“
No, these people are at least as hubris filled horses behinds as George Ryan. He would fit in beautifully.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 4:53 pm:

Not defending GHR, but we have no idea what Geo Ryan would say about Trumpkins or this party… unless someone asks.
Edgar has been asked, as an example.
- danray - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 5:11 pm:
Have met Paul a couple of times. He’s not funny an some may say that he’s a jerk. Many people are saying…
- Frank talks - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 5:23 pm:
Are you not entertained?
This is what it is, the GOP and how they roll. You can’t stop it. Jeanne Ives with her ad three years ago. The belief is politics and governance is a radio talk show not an actual real thing that impacts real people. Incite anger and hatred. How many GOP were there from areas that lost population while those darn Dems grew their bas in She-caw-go?
- It's your party and you'll cry if you want to - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 5:23 pm:
Hey Jim Durkin. Guess where all the disenfranchised Rebublicans went years ago.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 5:24 pm:
To the day;
What has been seemingly given as “Republican Day” is turning out to be a day where comedic malpractice to political posturing set a tone where even the later speakers couldn’t find a path to expand the party or seem more viable outside the base it was pandering to, and words of an echo chamber of anger that was under a bright blue sky.
You need to point out, and on a day like this it should be an obvious, what was the pitch, what was the common thread… what was the rallying to build bigger and better and use today to begin a crawling out of the bottom.
Where was that?
Here’s what I took away;
* Don’t alienate Trumpkins
* Cruel and vile is still the feature, not the bug
* Davis goes publicly wishy-washy with his office shopping
* Mary Miller can hold back what she’s thinking it appears
* Tracy, Durkin, McConchie… who is steering this… thing?
I saw no Reset, Regroup, Recruit.
I did see Reruns, Returns, and Reductions
I dunno… was it a good day?
- Amalia - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 6:31 pm:
well, at least some people know who Palazzolo is now. and it becomes a meme, to palazzolo is to go fully offending.
- EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 6:33 pm:

If we had only elected Poshard in ‘98. And maybe not only escaped the Ryan nightmare, but eventually that of Blago too (and maybe even altering Illinois history at least all the way to Rauner too).
- zatoichi - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 8:16 pm:
Paul Palazzola was the international president of Kiwanis back in 2010. He knows better. That is embarrassing to anyone involved in Kiwanis.
- thoughts matter - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 9:46 pm:
So people have moved from hiding behind Facebook memes to just throwing it all out there on a stage. I wonder just who is thrilled to listen to this stuff?
- Southern - Thursday, Aug 19, 21 @ 11:38 pm:
I’m sure Palazzolo will be in big trouble with GOP leadership. They will find it inexcusable and unconscionable that he didn’t use the opportunity to also make fun of people with developmental impairments, minorities, gays, etc.
- SubRosa - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 12:49 am:
I’d be offended if he/they weren’t so irrelevant.
