Captain’s log, May 123rd:
Supplies running low, spirits even lower. The last time a crew mate said “ahoy!” I pushed him off the plank. I’m not proud, but it’s what the Pirate Legend Madigan taught me to do. Old habits, I guess.
Lord, I know we don’t speak often, but I’m sincerely asking for some guidance. Do we commit to the mysterious land of Exelon? Should we lean into the winds (and solar rays) of change? And what of the burning rocks that have warmed our ancestors for centuries?
My better angels know the future could be bright but right now it looks bleak. May should only last 31 days, I know that for a fact! Or at least I thought I did. And yet every page I turn in the calendar says May, May, MAY. The month that never ends, a tortuous notion that traps me in nightmares of marble halls and thick gray smoke.
Perhaps the best course of action is pouring another glass of rum and allowing myself a wee nap…
