If you want people to support local news, then please don’t be so bad at it

* Oh, for crying out loud…

The plant, not the utility, will have to close in 24 years unless CWLP can reduce/capture all carbon emissions.

…Adding… They thankfully deleted the tweets. I saved one of them, though…

This just in: Local news fails to cover local news accurately.

  2. - Ok - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 12:02 pm:

This just in: CWLP themselves proposed to close Dallman earlier this year.

This plant won’t make it until 2025. It is wayyy too expensive to run.

    It’s not news. It’s Fox.

  4. - Hmm - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 12:13 pm:

That is Sinclair Broadcasting. Renewables will keep chipping away at demand for CWLP. They likely won’t make it that long.

  5. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 12:15 pm:

Sinclair must have some Ameren lobbyists among their shareholders.

It would also help if Channel 20 (and their Fox 55 sister station) actually hired more experienced, older, more seasoned journalists than getting someone barely out of college and their first job out of J-School. If they even went to J-School at all.

Somewhere in Springfield Don Hickman is probably turning over in his grave now.

And the SJ-R isn’t much better either. Basically Springfield has no local city-based news outlet anymore, other than the Illinois Times, which has gone downhill since they fired Bruce Rushton.

An apparent dearth of editors and originality at WICS…and Fox.

Hmm.@12:13. You are so correct. Renewables have been chipping away at fossil fuel electric every year. But as you know they are not reliable energy sources. We absolutely have to have either gas or coal(or nuke) backup sources. The whole point of this is to reduce our carbon footprint. The USA has been doing a very good job of this the last decade. Solar technology is much more affordable now than 10 yrs ago. But as we switch to an EV fleet we will needs much more capacity, and therefore much more backup capacity.

I agree local TV news is abysmal. But I do like the idea of municipal ultilities, answerable to the voters. They have other options than coal.

  9. - The Dude Abides - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 12:50 pm:

I live in Springfield but switched to watching Decatur local news years ago. I also dropped my SJR subscription years ago. I feel sorry for those that still work for that rag.

  10. - Ben Bluesman - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 12:54 pm:

Maybe if Hearst, Gannett, Sinclair, etc. would pay for more than the young kid out of J-school, you might get better coverage.

They make mistakes just like the old, seasoned veterans do…just read here once in awhile.

  11. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 1:02 pm:

Sure wish in the digital TV era it was still possible to get 24/7 weak fringe reception of St. Louis stations in Chatham. Like it was in the analog era. And maybe even also on cable in the early cable days too.

  12. - Bruce( no not him) - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 1:04 pm:

Breaking News: Springfield going back to wood fires and candles, just like Abe Lincoln did. Officials expect boom in tourism.
New city motto: Live like Lincoln.

  13. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 1:34 pm:

These local/small market stations are essentially an extension of facebook news now. That is where they find nearly all of their local stories.

==These local/small market stations are essentially an extension of facebook news now. That is where they find nearly all of their local stories.==

Whatever little bit of “local stories” you get. With emphasis on the quotations as Channel 20 claims to be a Springfield station but runs tons of Champaign, Danville and Eastern Bloc news and hardly anything that happens in the Capitol City (unless it’s something at the Capitol, City Hall, or somewhere in Springfield that’s nothing more than clickbait).

Plus also relaying tons of national and entertainment headlines and passing them off as “local news” too.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 1:39 pm:

It’s about the clicks and continuing false narratives designed to bring angst and/or division.

The honesty to task, the trade of news reporting is seemingly not the intent these day with some local outlets, and in that gins up social media wildfires.

  16. - Dirty Red - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 3:18 pm:

The same mayor in-charge of CWLP now is the same mayor who needed the Governor to call him directly about canceling the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March 2020.

  17. - Joe Schmoe - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 4:19 pm:

You aren’t going to get the media talent you want In Springfield when the entry level reporter can make more at McDonald’s.

  18. - Stormsw7706 - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 4:44 pm:

Springfield resident = Decatur for news and Champaign for sports. Have not watched Springfield news for over 2 years. Was painful to watch a once good station sink to Sinclair’s propaganda broadcasts

  19. - Mcleaniac - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 5:14 pm:

..then there is The Pantagraph 🙄

  20. - Anyone Remember - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 5:41 pm:

Springfield - local TV news is Sinclair & Fox - worst of all possible worlds. Now, if Snooze Channel 20 would fund their “news” they way they fund their “weather” it would be a different story.

  21. - East Sangamon - Wednesday, Sep 15, 21 @ 6:00 pm:

I watch Decatur for Springfield news, and Channel 20 and 3 I never watch. If they can’t find news in the area, have a five-minute news summary at 10 pm with the weather and shut the transmitters off.
