ILGOP jumps on Pritzker’s “governor of Chicago” quip

Thursday, Dec 2, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* ILGOP fundraising pitch…

Rich,

This is laughable.

Not only did Pritzker and his Democratic puppets take off to a climate change summit in London while blatantly ignoring the problems at home (what does the Governor of Illinois have to do with the U.N. anyway?) — now it’s come out that he described himself as “the governor of Chicago.”

Check it out:

First of all, if Pritzker had to describe himself to the people at this conference, we would like to reiterate our question: What does the governor of Illinois have to do with the U.N.?

Secondly, we’re not sure if Pritzker is aware, but there is much more to Illinois than just Chicago!

Send Pritzker a Reminder

Maybe if our governor spent more time addressing our lagging economic recovery ALL ACROSS OUR STATE, he wouldn’t forget about the rest of Illinois.

If you’re as tired as we are of Pritzker’s political games, we’re asking you and 54 other patriots in your zip code to step up and PROVE to him there’s more to Illinois than just Chicago!

Thank you,

Illinois Republican Party

Contribute

* The governor was asked about his comment earlier today…

Reporter: Could your rivals have kind of hopped on that that to say ‘See? He doesn’t really represent the entire state’? Would you like to comment on that?

Pritzker: Apparently they don’t have much to complain about. It was a joke. I was pointing out, though, that people know the great global city of Chicago and the name of Chicago everywhere in the world. They may be less frequently aware of what state Chicago is in. You couldn’t tell me, I couldn’t tell you what’s what county Glasgow is in. But people know Glasgow. So I was just pointing out that sometimes when people wondered where Illinois was, it was easiest just to say ‘Chicago.’

When I moved out of Chicago to Springfield, I would still say I was from there or a few hours from there when I traveled abroad. I get it, but maybe the governor shouldn’t say it out loud. Too late now, though.

* On a related note, the leader of the GOP’s donor class, Ron Gidwitz, is hard at work trying to find an opponent for Pritzker who is also acceptable to the state’s wealthiest resident, according to Greg Hinz

But at the same time, none of the declared candidates have exactly set the world on fire. That’s why some top party insiders, such as former Ambassador Ron Gidwitz, are said to be shaking the trees pretty hard in search of a reform-minded business type who could move voters—and get mega party donor Ken Griffin to follow through on his pledge and actually bankroll a credible challenger to his fellow billionaire Pritzker.

Gidwitz and Kirk Dillard are old pals, so that doesn’t bode well for Dillard’s chances.

Not the best flub given how the ILGOP makes everything “Chicago”

Got relaxed in a moment, it bites back.

  2. - Norseman - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:42 pm:

    === bankroll a credible challenger ===

There is no “credible” in the GOP.

  3. - Jed - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:43 pm:

When you’re the ILGOP, you’ve got to grab on to whatever slingshot ammo you can find.

Dear Gov, more people know Scotland than Glasgow, but go ahead and keep digging.

  4. - Pundent - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:44 pm:

The problem with Gidwitz’s approach is that it’s addition by subtraction. Hard to see how that works in the current environment. And if that candidate loses the ILGOP primary it could very well set the party back even further. It might be better to concede to Bailey at this point and hope the climate is a bit better in 4 years.

  5. - ChicagoVinny - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:44 pm:

Technically he is the Governor of Chicago, and Springfield, and Carbondale, and Dixon, and etc.

    emmmmk

  7. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:48 pm:

The ILGOP should field and fully find credible candidates for Secretary of State and Treasurer well outside whomever the nominee for Governor or Senator turn out to be… and focus on Congressional races, less the possible abortion fallout in those races… that’s how they can move forward.

Gidwitz is on a fool’s errand to a possible colossal type fall… the taint of the Trump/Rauner parlay of idiocy is still strong

  8. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:48 pm:

Ill-advised comment. But compare to the GOP candidate who refers to Chicago as one would a foreign country.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:50 pm:

    === But compare to..===

Bailey was signaling to a group, purposely, and not being part of that groups matters not to Bailey.

    Pritzker’s was a misstep

  10. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:50 pm:

    “Gidwitz is on a fool’s errand…”

Pretty much sums up his political career. I once attended a Ron Gidwitz meet-and-greet that Ron Gidwitz did not attend.

  11. - Treefiddy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:51 pm:

Have traveled abroad several times, found out first-hand how much easier it is to tell people you’re from Chicago rather than Illinois. Illinois usually got blank stares, but mentioning Chicago typically got a knowing smile from the older folks and a comment like, “Oh, Micheal Jordan and the Bulls!”

  12. - JS Mill - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:51 pm:

The ILGOP needs to say something about something since they have chosen not to comment in Larry Ligas and the good news on the bond sale. I mean goodness, why would they talk about those two serious issue when you can try to rip the governor for talking about Chicago.

  13. - The Dude Abides - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:52 pm:

The ILGOP never tires of the Chicago bashing. There’s not enough votes among the downstate Chicago bashers to defeat the Governor though.

  14. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:52 pm:

===“Oh, Micheal Jordan and the Bulls!” ===

Harold Washington used to say that for years, Europeans would talk about Al Capone when people said they were from Chicago. “Now they all ask ‘How’s Harold?’”

    Always got a big laugh.

  15. - TheInvisibleMan - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:53 pm:

= more people know Scotland than Glasgow, but go ahead and keep digging. =

Yes, but Scotland is the name of the country, not the county, Glasgow is located in.

You’re proving his point in not even being able to tell the word county from country, much less knowing anything at all about the county of Lanark.

  16. - dan l - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:54 pm:

fast forward a few years to an alternate reality where bailey is governor. Imagine him,
    1) being invited to the UN
    2) getting in there without being confused with a out of place tourist
    3) explaining to foreign dignitaries what the hamlet of Xenia is.

  17. - dan l - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:57 pm:

I do a lot of work with a lot of Swiss and German folks. I’d hazard a guess that maybe 80% of the Xer’s, Elder Millennials wish to see……’Al Bundy Fountain’.

  18. - Long Time Independent - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 1:59 pm:

Not sure if GOP has anyone that can beat Pritzker. But JMO I really believe that Dillard would have the best chance. He’s from downstate originally with ties to both Dupage and Cook County. He’s far from a Trumpster and could attract Suburban House Wife’s back to the GOP. With a primary full of far right wingers he might pull it off being in the center. Also remember most people who went with Rauner against Dillard now regret it.
    Again JMO

  19. - OneMan - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:00 pm:

It wasn’t his best comedy moment, it is going to move votes away from him, unlikely, it is useful in playing to those folks who think he is too Chicago-centric. Yep.

== There is no “credible” in the GOP. ==

I think you could find it, call me nuts (that would be fair) tbh the name of Dan Rutherford has come to mind lately. Don’t think he could win the primary but that type of candidate could be a possibility in a general.

  20. - Dotnonymous - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:00 pm:

Clarence McClain used to tell me that story with a big smile on his face.

  21. - Arsenal - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:00 pm:

Gidwitz has long been out of touch with Republican primary voters. It makes sense that he’d blanch at the current crop. But it is interesting that, if this report is true, he’s having trouble finding any other takers.

I suspect the field is just about set.

  22. - dan l - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:01 pm:

By the way, just days after a school shooting in michigan killed a bunch of little kids, Bailey is proud to share with us that he’d sooner ‘die’ on his ‘porch’ then ‘done give up thar’ firearms as he called for the removal of the FOID card.

  23. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:03 pm:

===Also remember most people who went with Rauner against Dillard now regret it===

Yeah, I’d like to see some data on that before agreeing. Also, remember that Dillard went hard right in 2016 in an attempt to win that primary. Didn’t work against Rauner.

  24. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:03 pm:

Wish I could learn how much (how little?) the ILGOPs raise from this pitch.

Bet the under if you get the chance.

  25. - Give Me A Break - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:05 pm:

Really don’t understand the GOP thinking. Do they get up every morning and say, “hey what can we do today to tick off the voters in the most populated area of Illinois”?

  26. - Benjamin - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:08 pm:

Given that about 65% of the state lives in the Chicago metro region…the goverenor’s not *that* wrong.

  27. - Publius - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:09 pm:

I also travel for work in Europe. Everyone there knows Chicago. No one really knows about Illinois. I think he used it as an opportunity to make that explination. Also, just as important no one in Europe really knows how states work compared to the Federal government. Most countries don’t have strong states that function like a country elsewhere. The UK has the closest with devolved parliments in Scotland and Wales. However the England doesn’t have one. England affairs are decided in the UK Parliament where Scotland and Wales have members.

  28. - Duh Bears - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:09 pm:

-just days after a school shooting-

So are gun owners supposed to feel shame or something every time something bad happens?

  29. - Anon221 - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:22 pm:

“You couldn’t tell me, I couldn’t tell you what’s what county Glasgow is in.”

I was assuming “county” was either a misprint or mispeak, and “country” was the intended word.

However, if Pritzker did indeed say “county” then fine… good point. A point flying far over most folks heads. But still, he was there supposedly representing all of Illinois. That joke is going to continue to reverberate in election ads whether he joked or not. Very poor misstep.

  30. - Spin Doctor - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:22 pm:

Like OW said, he was in a relaxed moment with a mostly friendly crowd and wasn’t thinking about the ramifications. That said, perfect opportunity to hit back and tout all the ways he’s trying to put Illinois back on the (global) map so that he won’t have to make that clarification in the future. After all, he was there to highlight a lot of stuff happening in Central Illinois, not just Chicago(land).

  31. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:24 pm:

===I was assuming “county” was either a misprint or mispeak===

Why would you assume such a thing?

  32. - Demoralized - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:25 pm:

    ==reform-minded business type==

Yeah. That’s what we need. Another Rauner type. We see how that worked out.

    Any Video Link?

  34. - Galway Bay - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:33 pm:

I will say it again. Dillard is the only Republican who can beat JB. Certainly none of those already announced can. Who could possibly be sitting out there right now that Gidwitz magically produces to run who is electable?

  35. - Anon221 - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:37 pm:

Rich- Spellcheck can do wonky things. I didn’t hear the audio. And like I wrote, if not and he was emphasizing the word “county”, fine, good point, but a poor attempt at a geography lesson.

  36. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:42 pm:

“Governor of Chicago” is a gaffe but I know what he means.

I spent some time in UK and Ireland in the oughts and quickly gave up saying Illinois as where I was from when getting blank stares from people because they always knew what I meant when I then said I lived near Chicago. Now their knowledge of Chicago was mostly confined to Michael Jordan and Al Capone but that’s another story.

  37. - Captain Obvious - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:43 pm:

If Dillard is the best shot for governor, GOP is better off putting the lion’s share of funding into congressional races, cause Dillard is a 5-7 point loser to Pritzker. I would love to be wrong but I don’t think I am.

===That joke is going to continue to reverberate in election ads whether he joked or not.===

And move the needle not one bit. Whoever is miffed about this was already voting for anyone who isn’t JB.

  40. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:53 pm:

Rutherford’s “Friday Fiasco” is up there as one of the biggest soul and career crushing moments in recent Illinois political history.

Boy, in real time, that implosion…

Yep, a “Rutherford type” might be interesting, but in these times, the reason it’s tough to find them is they left before it was too late.

  41. - Anon221 - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 2:56 pm:

Jibba- I’m miffed about it and will be voting for him. The minute I read that yesterday, it was obvious he was handing the GOP campaign fodder. All I ask is that he be more mindful of his quality of “jokes”.

  42. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:06 pm:

Who cares? I get it, it’s something to keep the comms flunkies busy, but can’t they figure out a better way to spend their money? If party honchos honestly believe that this joke (or admission, I assume they’d say) is going to change the mind of one single voter or get them one extra dollar in donations, they all need to have their heads examined.

  43. - Thomas Paine - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:11 pm:

    1. The “between the lines” is that Jesse Sullivan is not that person, and neither is Gidwitz pal Leslie Munger.

    2. Best of luck finding someone that we’ve never heard of that can beat Darren Bailey in a primary, even after the “revelation” that he is tied to the January 6th insurrection, as if Mary Miller was not tied to him at the hip.

  44. - FormerParatrooper - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:11 pm:

When asked where I live and I say Illinois, more than one person asked if Illinois was in Chicago.

Seeing the Gov was over the pond I can understand why he said Chicago. The ILGOP is disappointing in trying to make it an issue. They should have embraced this and used as an example why the whole State should shine and be memorable for more tha just one city.

  45. - Galway Bay - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:23 pm:

Captain O—never know you might be right. But Dillard was outspent 10-1 by Rauner and still came within a vote per precinct. Dillard—this hurts in a primary I get it—cut an ad for Obama and voted for the Illinois version of the dream act. At least he’s got a punchers chance of getting votes in Beverly and Benld, Springfield to Sauganash and on and on. He would be the best shot the R’s have by far.

  46. - DuPage Guy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:32 pm:

= You couldn’t tell me, I couldn’t tell you what’s what county Glasgow is in=

Trick question. Glasgow isn’t in a county. It’s its own Council.

  47. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:33 pm:

Who exactly would be a Dillard constituency in a primary?

Would Dillard and Sullivan be fishing off the same pier?

What message does Dillard bring in this midterm, after Trump, that can both win the primary and win a general election?

===Gidwitz and Kirk Dillard are old pals, so that doesn’t bode well for Dillard’s chances.===

Sometimes one sentence says more than the few words used.

  48. - Pundent - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:37 pm:

=Dillard is the only Republican who can beat JB.=

Maybe. But we don’t even know what a Dillard campaign would look like so it’s pure speculation at this point. Beating Pritzker at a minimum means uniting downstate and suburban Republican voters. And right now there isn’t much that unites those voters. Doesn’t matter if the candidate is Bailey or Dillard that’s the task.

  49. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 3:39 pm:

    ===Trick question. Glasgow isn’t in a county. It’s its own Council.===

    Everyone knows that….

    Not.

Pritzker felt too comfortable in a public setting *in* Chicago and it plopped out.

If it is the tipping point, now you’re voting against him, odds are, if that wouldn’t have happened ya woulda found another tipping point soon.

It’ll be in ads, it’ll be a “thing”, but it’s for a base already not in Pritzker’s camp. New chum for the sharks… but chum, not food.

    I had heard this once and it stuck;

It’s not the hostile environments that the big gaffes can happen, it’s the safe places where the guards are down that usually bring out the worse ones.

  50. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:11 pm:

Thomas Paine mentioning Mary Miller being tied to Darren Bailey at the hip just got me imagining Mary Miller as Bailey’s lite gov ticketmate. lol. who would be a Bailey lite gov candidate though?

  51. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:13 pm:

“So are gun owners supposed to feel shame or something every time something bad happens?“

Only the ones that think freedom requires no responsibility. People that think that there is no need for a foid card. People that think there is no need for a conceal carry class. Those people should feel bad. Unfortunately they never will.

  52. - Otto Wanker - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:15 pm:

The headline is priceless “jumps”…. Many in Illinois media feel part of their job is to protect/deflect criticism from healthy JB Pritzker.

  53. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:15 pm:

Stop with the Dillard, Rutherford talk. Neither can win a primary. The only person that can beat JB Pritzker is JB Pritzker.

  54. - Rathskeller - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:27 pm:

If Gidwitz is looking for a winning candidate remember that Dillard came within nearly a vote per precinct of beating Rauner in 2016 despite being outspent by over 10-1.

  55. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:36 pm:

    ===… remember that…===

    All pre-Trump.

This is not the party of Edgar or the ever evolved Dillard.

  56. - Rathskeller - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:39 pm:

The problem is, 2016 was a long time ago.

And 2014, when that actually happened, is even moreso.

  58. - Suburban Mom - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:42 pm:

Not only do most Europeans not know what “Illinois” is, but when you try to explain where Chicago is beyond “in the middle,” and you say, “Okay, so you know the giant lakes you can see from space?” a lot of them say, “WAIT, WHAT GIANT LAKES YOU CAN SEE FROM SPACE?” and are startled to be shown the Great Lakes on a map.

(It is a long-time pet peeve that the same people who have no idea where Chicago is will tell you, “I’m from Aargh” and you say, “Oh, I don’t know it, where’s that?” and they get sniffy and say, “You don’t KNOW? It’s a city of 1200 where Charlemagne’s horse once sneezed, Americans are so ignorant of geography, you should KNOW, it’s very IMPORTANT.” But you’re like “Chicago” and they’re like “never heard of it, Americans are so provincial thinking people care about minor American towns.”)

Anyway, yeah, JB shouldn’t have said it, but the complaints from the ILGOP sound pretty provincial if taken at face value.

  59. - Long Time Independent - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:42 pm:

So assuming that the present candidates are on the far right it leaves that middle open for Dillard. The Cook County and Dupage County GOP would easily line up with Dillard. He’s from Dupage and is close with Dan Cronin. In Cook County the present Chairman Morrison turned on Rauner seconds after he lost to Pritzker. In his op-ed he mentioned that he regretted not backing Dillard although he backed Rauner twice.
The other thing being the Chairman of RTA he’s been in position to expand his base of supporters and has grown his fundraising base.
JMO he’s the only one that has any chance out of the announced candidates.

What is laughable is not understanding the politics that what you may like about Dillard, or what I like about Dillard ain’t the 2021-2022 GOP.

It’s funny you can’t grasp that, but not funny to Illinois having a functioning two party system

  64. - Demoralized - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 4:59 pm:

==when non-Republicans like yourself try and define who belongs to Illinois GOP==

I think that the “our way or the highway” Republicans do a pretty good job of that. I mean, isn’t the only test to be a Republican anymore that you show absolute fealty towards Trump? I don’t see any other requirements in today’s Republican party. It’s pretty much follow him or else.

  65. - Long Time Independent - Thursday, Dec 2, 21 @ 5:00 pm:

Rathskeller— great point he always telling Republicans what’s right what’s wrong in the party but never seems to support any Republicans. He’s even left of Rhinos

= When I moved out of Chicago to Springfield, I would still say I was from there or a few hours from there when I traveled abroad. I get it, but maybe the governor shouldn’t say it out loud. Too late now, though. =

If you are from northern, central, eastern, western, southern, or Metro-east Illinois and had a pen pal in the Encyclopedia Britannica era, you have made the same reference. I’ll bet those world leaders can point to Chicago on a ap no matter where they are from while we cannot name the continent they are from.

The Chicago metropolitan area puts Illinois on the map. The city is not something to be ashamed of. This kind of bickering might be why we are hollowing out faster.

By that logic Adam Kingzinger would be getting a lot of support by the suburban GOP and I hear crickets. The idea that we can turn back the clock and pretend it’s 2014 is wishful thinking. Jim Durkin tells me so. Actually that’s not true. Jim Durkin doesn’t say much these days on these topics. But he is probably commiserating with Dan Cronin about the good old days.

Several years ago took a trip to China with people from all over USA and Canada. Mostly university alums. Saying I lived in central Illinois was a nothing addon to any conversation. Saying I grew up in Chicago became a 15-20 minute big city comparison of sports, music, and museums. Once I casually mentioned that two much older uncles played in Capone’s private party band.
