Today’s quotable

* Marie Newman via E&E News via Politico…
“I’m not running against Mr. Casten. I announced my reelection first, and then he announced his reelection,” she said. “My reelection was requested by my entire district, voters and constituents. So I’m running for the district.”
- The Real Downstate - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:22 am:
Although I understand that the new 6th has more of Newman’s old district than Casten’s old district, she literally lives in a different district than Casten. And “requested by my entire district” falls a little flat when you look at Casten’s endorsements.
- Kam's Floor - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:23 am:
If your entire district requested your reelection, is it an election or an anointment?
- Wow - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:23 am:
Is Dan Lipinski coming back from Notre Dame?
- Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:25 am:
-I’m running for the district.-
Just not the one I live in.
- regular democrat - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:25 am:
This lady a real treat. Good luck with her. I see why the party didnt do her any favors
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:26 am:
===“… I announced my reelection first, and then he announced his reelection,”===
What is she… 9?
“I said it first, I said it first…”
She continues to disappoint, and make it solely about her, and her vision… of herself.
- Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:27 am:
-My reelection was requested by my entire district, voters and constituents. So I’m running for the district.-
As a resident of the current and new district, I can categorically say this statement is patently false.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:28 am:
===“My reelection was requested by my entire district.”===
A legend in her own mind. Makes one long for Lipinski.
Who uses “requested” when you’re being drawn out on purpose?
- Soo.... - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:29 am:
Ron Burgundy
As a resident of the current and new District as well, I second that
- Amalia - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:29 am:
what a ridiculous comment, totally not necessary.
- West Side the Best Side - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:30 am:
Maybe what she meant to say was that her current district wanted her to run in the new district.
- Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:32 am:
“I got dibs.”
“I’m not running against him. He’s running against me.”
- City Zen - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:38 am:
Vanity.
- Norseman - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:42 am:
=== “My reelection was requested by my entire district, voters and constituents. ===
Then she has no problem. Tongue planted firmly in cheek.
- Frank talks - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:47 am:
I’m first so there’s that. Also which district asked her to run? She knows Dupage has never met her right? That’s actually a good chunk of the district.
- Wow - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:51 am:
New DuPage portion, and the southeast part of the district is Lipinski territory.
- Jocko - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:53 am:
==I’m not running against Mr. Casten. I announced my reelection first==
Someone needs to tell Marie that calling something ‘first’ only gets you the passenger seat when riding with a group of friends.
- Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:55 am:
I think her whole campaign strategy is to file first, so she appears at the top of the ballot. That’ll win it for sure. /s
- UPS - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 9:57 am:
Team Lipinski often raised the alarm about Marie and her deeply self centered and flawed character. While it is good that the rest of the state has now become aware of the situation its unfortunate that a half decent public servant like Lipinski was trashed by Newman and her out of district handlers while the rest of the party remained silent, or worse jumped into the pile on. The Democratic party will receive its comeuppances for allowing this obscene disaster to ever step foot into public office when that 6th district flips to the Republicans party next November.
- DuPage Moderate - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:03 am:
It won’t matter. The Dems are going to get crucified at the ballot boxes in the suburbs.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:05 am:
=== The Dems are going to get crucified at the ballot boxes in the suburbs.===
Now factor in abortion.
Way too early to be imbibing, 10+ months of politics yet to go.
Now… Newman… she won’t be helping herself as a candidate with how she’s rolling
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:06 am:
===crucified===
Tone it down.
- Bourbon Street - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:08 am:
==Someone should tell Marie that calling something ‘first’ only gets you the passenger seat when riding with a group of friends=
And even that ends once you get older than 10.
- Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:10 am:
-GOP chances in district-
Yes they could have a chance, but you can’t beat somebody with nobody. And the Orland Park mayor backed by Jeanne Ives isn’t gonna make it.
- ChrisB - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:12 am:
Sounds like she’s going to have some very painful months ahead. A shame, really.
- Skeptic - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:14 am:
“No, you hang up first.” “No, you hang up first.” “No, you hang up first.” “Ok, we’ll hang up on the count of 3.”
- Huh? - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:16 am:
“I’m not running against Mr. Casten.”
If you aren’t running against casten, who are you running against? Your self?
- Techie - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:20 am:
Interesting to see where they get their campaign cash from:

Looks like Casten gets a decent amount of money from venture capitalists, conservative-leaning thinkers (U of Chicago people), and stock traders. Newman gets a decent chunk from union groups, progressive groups, and the healthcare industry.
Neither is perfect, but I’d take the latter over the former.
- TNR - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:20 am:
Between these strange comments, giving out Harmon and Welch’s cell phone numbers, and the jaw-droppingly stupid employment contract she sign to keep a potential (and decidedly non-threatening) opponent from running, she’s done a great job of establishing herself as one the most erratic and downright wacky figures in recent Illinois politics.
- Jaded - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 10:29 am:
It’s like when the Packers play the Vikings. Don’t care about the outcome, just rooting for injuries.
- Downstate - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 11:03 am:
“Now factor in abortion.”
To be sure. But, the RNCC will be beating the drum on education and crime. And polling isn’t trending the Dems way on either issue.
- Responsa - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 11:21 am:
Some people are just not cut out to be politicians. It’s starting to look like Marie may be firmly in that category.
- Nagidam - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 11:32 am:
===“Now factor in abortion.”===
Abortion has always been a big issue in the suburbs for Republicans. And I’m sure it will be again next cycle. But, Chicago stepped up policing for last weekend to try and halt retail thefts and there were still four high profile smash and grabs. There is no concrete plan to instill confidence that the authorities can stop the problem let alone all the violence. Add in that States Attorney Foxx has been wounded by the Smollett case and you have a perfect storm of an issue brewing for 2022. Is there time to right the ship on crime? Sure, but they need a plan.
- cermak_rd - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 11:40 am:
UPS,
Lipinski the younger inherited his seat in an undemocratic fashion from Lipinski the older and failed to keep up with the change in his voter composition. Hardly a model of public service. Not that I care for Newman. I was highly grateful when I was revectored into Gutierrez (and now Garcia’s) district.
- Mr Illinois - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:08 pm:
I supported Newman in 2018 and 2020 not because of her personality but because she was a rare candidate who will stand up to the defense and healthcare industry interests. Amazes me how many people just fixate on how ‘rude’ she is. I have dealt with a lot of politicians, at least 90% of them are egomaniacs. Maybe Casten isn’t, but his record is unimpressive to me regardless. Maybe you have to have a little attitude to actually fight for something good.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:22 pm:
===Abortion has always been a big issue in the suburbs for Republicans. And I’m sure it will be again next cycle. But, Chicago===
If abortion is curtailed in any way… that just like any other year.
Nope.
- Techie - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:24 pm:
@Mr Illinois
I’m inclined to agree with you here. Of course it would be best to have a candidate who is a pleasant person and doesn’t put their foot in their mouth.
But at the end of the day, as long as the person isn’t nuts or a complete jerk, their voting record is what’s most important. I’m not a student of Casten or Newman, but from what I know, Newman’s record is more friendly to middle and low income people than Casten’s.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:25 pm:
=== To be sure. But, the RNCC will be beating the drum on education and crime. And polling isn’t trending the Dems way on either issue.===
The thing you are missing… in the suburbs, and women, it’s stronger as a whole the abortion issue, otherwise GOPers here in Illinois would, statewide, run pro-life, and win.
Is there a Dem CongressCritters in the suburbs that’s pro-life?
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:26 pm:
===Amazes me how many people just fixate on how ‘rude’ she is.===
Politics is a game of addition, not subtraction.
Alienating her own colleagues says a great deal than her manners.
- Glenn - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:26 pm:
==Lipinski the younger inherited his seat in an undemocratic fashion==
Lipinski Sr. slyly announced his withdrawal from his re-election campaign very late, leaving only Lipinski Jr. as a viable candidate, obviously appraised of his intention by Sr., thus keeping the seat in the family by virtue of having the only organized campaign.
The overwhelming Democratic Party support for an anti-abortion candidate like Lipinski was disappointing to me, and Newman had to overcome a lot of undemocratic party obstruction to take the Lipinski seat.
- Teddy Salad - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:32 pm:
Lipinski focused on bringing home the money for all aspects of Illinois transportation needs.
He was a lousy politician, but a great “bring home the bacon” guy.
- Vincent Vega - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:34 pm:
The new 6th is a blue district and the GOP candidates for the 6th (don’t forget Grasso from Burr Ridge and Cruz from Oak Lawn) are far from moderate candidates. The GOP primary is likely to turn off most swing voters and any 6th district voter who is worried about CRT likely did not vote as a democrat in the past. A moderate GOP candidate could hurt Casten or Newman but I don’t see that candidate materializing and I am not sure they could win the primary.
- Ollie - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:38 pm:
Newman behaves like a petulant child. She whines, she lies, and she stamps her feet. Bribing opponents, misrepresenting endorsements, and the list goes on. She needs a time out- and come June 28th, she will be getting just that.
- Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 12:44 pm:
-Alienating her own colleagues says a great deal than her manners.-
Right. How are you best serving your constituents by picking fights with your own delegation? I want someone who can work with others instead of a crusader who thinks they can do no wrong.
- City remap - Tuesday, Dec 14, 21 @ 4:31 pm:
Never forget being just a few feet from her in 2018, as she turned to a campaign operative and stated “Let that J__k off wait” concerning concession speech. Easy to say I wasn’t there in 2020.
