Question of the day

Tuesday, Apr 26, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Sen. Darren Bailey sat down with Crain’s Chicago Business the other day

Greg Hinz: Are you glad to see those ads from the Democratic Governors Association?

Darren Bailey: Oh, yeah. Yeah. I dig ‘em And, that’s beautiful because, you know, the establishment on both sides don’t believe that some farmer from Southern Illinois would ever be a governor. But here’s what they don’t understand - and it’s actually one of the same things that got President Trump elected - a grassroots movement, people who have never been involved people who have been forgotten. We’ve seen this many times in history when people rise up because they’ve had enough. And that is certainly what we’re doing in Illinois.

* The Question: Do you think embracing the DGA ad campaign on his behalf is the best approach for Bailey? Explain.

Yes. He can’t afford to advertise his message, so he might as well accept the free stuff on the principle of “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Don’t think it is a winning message, but it gives him a puncher’s chance to get through the primary.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:25 pm:

Couldn’t hurt in the primary, playing to the angry extreme…

  3. - AC - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:31 pm:

If his embrace of the DGA campaign commercials were coupled with the kid of shrill, bombastic anti establishment ads we all expected from a mask rule defying Eastern Bloc legislator, it might help. With his current generic ad campaign, it only confuses a lot of people about who he is and what he’s about. To the casual observer, he now seems to be the candidate of choice for anti vax, pro-Democratic Republican voters. It’s incoherent.

    The enemy of my enemy…

  5. - Real - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:37 pm:

Between Irvin and Bailey I see that only Bailey has a base while Irvin only has someone’s handout.

  6. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:50 pm:

=Between Irvin and Bailey I see that only Bailey has a base while Irvin only has someone’s handout.=

Bailey has taken $1 million from Uihlein , so who is taking handouts? Yes, Irvin has wealthier sponsor, but still…

Bailey has no choice than to embrace the DGA material. It will haunt him in the general if he gets there. So will his socialism and tax increases.

  7. - Roman - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:51 pm:

Yes, lumping JB and Irvin/Griffin together as part of the establishment is a good strategy. A big part of Trumpism has nothing to do with conservative ideology and a lot to with pure populism and the desire to flip-off anyone in power — regardless if that power comes from Wall Street or from under a Capitol dome.

  8. - Real - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:52 pm:

    -JS

Context matters. Only Irvin has a TV ad out stating that handouts keep people down.

  9. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:56 pm:

=Context matters. Only Irvin has a TV ad out stating that handouts keep people down.=

    You are right, context matters.

Between fed farm subsidies and PPP bailey has taken over $3 million while trying to deprive those who were truly needy of support during covid. He went so far as to call it socialism, which is a laugh riot considering his status as an active socialist.

    Context does matter.

  10. - ArchPundit - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 3:58 pm:

I think it was the right strategy and he worked into his message. Pretty tight answer. You cannot stop it and complaining about it is worthless so he shifted it to make his point.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:13 pm:

===He should gain the initiative by proposing legislation to prohibit it.===

    What, stifle freedom of speech?

    lol

    Nope.

  12. - OneMan - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:16 pm:

The old school approach would be to condemn “interference”, ‘aw that’s terrible, golly, I don’t like when Democrats step into our primary’…

    While liking it.

I guess being ok with it is the new normal in the GOP? So I suspect embracing it isn’t a bad approach.

  13. - Ainsley Hayes - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:26 pm:

“He can’t afford to fund his message.”

He can’t? He’s got a million in the bank. They certainly can afford it. The question is why aren’t they?

  14. - Osborne Smith III - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:30 pm:

The fact that Senator Bailey still believes he has a chance of winning the GOP Primary, much less in November, is reason enough to find anything he says laughable and not worth the kilobytes to discuss them.

  15. - Leslie K - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:34 pm:

    What SAP said

  16. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:39 pm:

He sounds like a martyr, preparing to sacrifice himself for his movement. The DGA ad reinforces that for him.

His campaign is all coming down to one final interview with the only voter who matters. If he doesn’t get the endorsement at Mar-a-Lago, he might as well stay in Florida.

  17. - Nick - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:41 pm:

why would Bailey be mad about the DGA getting involved?

Of course he’s okay with it I’ve been told repeatedly that he almost voted for Biden!

  18. - PublicServant - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:50 pm:

=== Only Irvin has a TV ad out stating that handouts keep people down. ===

Except him getting Griff’s handouts, of course.

  19. - Raising Kane - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 4:54 pm:

It’s one thing to be happy about it….it’s another to say it. Those things have a nasty habit of coming back to bite.

  20. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 5:33 pm:

I have no idea what this means.

  21. - Lincoln Lad - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 5:35 pm:

    “Run Forrest, run!”
    That’s the tag line…

  22. - The Old Man - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 5:51 pm:

A Bailey candidacy on the November will lead to HUGE legislative losses in the suburbs for the GOP, don’t believe me just look at Trump’s impact in the suburbs last cycle. Always heard when the republicans form a firing squad we get in a circle, well the circle is forming.

  23. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 6:01 pm:

===He’s got a million in the bank. They certainly can afford it===

That’s a week on Chicago TV

  24. - Louis G Atsaves - Tuesday, Apr 26, 22 @ 10:07 pm:

So Bailey thinks the DGA’s attempts at defining him are wonderful?

  25. - Pundent - Wednesday, Apr 27, 22 @ 8:07 am:

=So Bailey thinks the DGA’s attempts at defining him are wonderful?=

Isn’t the better question to ask, “how does the ILGOP find itself in a place where this can happen?” The opportunity for the party to distance itself from Darren Bailey and others like him has long since past. When you embrace all without qualification this is what you get.

  26. - Friendly Bob Adams - Wednesday, Apr 27, 22 @ 8:25 am:

I think Bailey is happy for the attention, from the DGA or anywhere. He’s short on money and can’t get any publicity north of his home base.
