Today’s quotable

Lightfoot, in a statement from her campaign via supporter Ald. Scott Waguespack, 32d, “welcomed” Vallas to the race:
“Paul Vallas running and losing has become a stunt. Chicago doesn’t want his failed experiments that closed schools, hurt already struggling neighborhoods and ignored police misconduct that cost the City millions. He hasn’t been taken seriously by voters because his outdated and destructive ideas would only make the most challenging issues facing the city worse.”
Ouch.

Lightfoot likes to throw out those zingers.
All in favor of both of these politicians taking a bow and departing for a much-deserved retirement, please raise your hand.
- thunderspirit - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:19 am:
I’m no fan of Vallas, but I would say taht if there’s one think Lightfoot knows well, it’s failed experiments and costing the city millions.
- Friendly Bob Adams - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:21 am:
I think it’s time for the press to start referring to Vallas as a “perennial candidate”.
- TinyDancer(FKA) - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:36 am:
She’s right about one thing….Vallas was a disaster for CPS.(Let’s end social promotion (banned punctuation mark) Flunk everybody (banned punctuation mark))
What’s sad is Lori’s so vulnerable and there’s not one decent challenger.
- Big Dipper - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:42 am:
==Vallas was a disaster for CPS==
He was also a disaster in Philadelphia and New Orleans. Not sure why he thinks he’s qualified other than sheer ego.
- Blue Dog - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:42 am:
I get confused. Is it Pat Vallas or Paul Quinn.
- TNR - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:47 am:
I get bashing him on schools, but not sure what position he was in that had anything to do with investigating police misconduct.
It is interesting that Lightfoot is now employing aldermanic surrogates to zing her opponents. It’s probably smart to have someone other than her toss around the vitriol.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:52 am:
Paul Vallas is one John Kass “likes”
Keep that in mind, and why it is Kass likes Vallas
- low level - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 10:56 am:
Wags brought in to respond. Talk about failures.
Ill vote for just about anyone in a runoff vs Lightfoot. She is a fiasco.

The old guy who nobody asked for who runs for everything and is bereft of ideas? Yes.

Anyone that does what they should at CPS is flogged by CTU. CPS was and is in dire need of serious change, but it will never happen. Vallas was not a great Superintendent but he was not a disaster. He inherited a disaster and it still is.
That is in no way an endorsement. The fact that he took the CPS position might be indicative of his lack of judgement.
But Lightfoot calling anyone out is a hoot. Worst mayor ever and that is saying a lot.
- PublicServant - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 11:02 am:
You know what they say about people in glass houses, and throwing stones…

That may be a road she lives to regret going down. Some of her harshest critics are other Alderpersons.
- low level - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 11:09 am:
Under Vallas, not only did test scores go up but new college prep high schools were built that now rank among the best in the state. Paul Vallas did that.

Villas represented the FOP in negotiations with the City.
The FOP.
Under its current “leadership.”

Easy to increase the average score when your policy is flunking out the lower-achieving kids and encouraging them to drop out.
The charter schools also “counsel” the problem kids out.
And where are those kids today?
Causing chaos in the streets.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 11:43 am:
===And where are those kids today?

That’s a bit unfair, almost of the same process of single parent homes.
With respect.

No humility, just more arrogance from a Mayor elected with 73% of the vote now polling at lower than 30%

== one John Kass “likes” ==
Kass is always quick to promote a fellow Greek. But your point on their ideological synergy is correct. Vallas has tacked noticeably rightward. Wins him plenty of twitter likes, but not a lot of votes in those waters in a citywide elections.
- low level - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 11:54 am:
==causing chaos in the streets==
If we assume the ones causing the chaos are 16-25ish, we will realize they were not of school age when Vallas ran CPS, so your point fails.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 11:55 am:
===No humility,===
No need to be humble against a guy who got (checks notes) 5% last time he ran
Can’t beat someone with no one, but someone with a 5% base of voters the last time they ran ain’t one to be feared.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 11:57 am:
===If we assume===
Like I said, same as single parent homes.
“Assuming”
Yep. So much of a want to things.
- low level - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 12:04 pm:
==someone with a 5% base of voters the last time ==
Fair enough, but someone who has lost as much support as Lightfoot has doesnt strike me as being particularly strong right now either.
The race will be who can get to the runoff. I suspect the anti - Lori vote will be high.
- Baloneymous - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 1:01 pm:
If this race is between Lightfoot, Vallas and Quinn, yikes. Talk about needing a “none of the above” candidate.
- Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 1:02 pm:
if he’s such a fly, why is Lori swatting? I can’t stand the guy.
- thisjustinagain - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 1:02 pm:
Vallas and Quinn…the Two Horsemen of the Appalling.(TM). Although I have no issue with ending social promotion, both men have had their time in the limelight, took their chances, and now they should find new projects other than elected office.
- Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 1:14 pm:
-why is Lori swatting?-
That’s what she does. To everything.
- MavGoose - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 1:58 pm:
Wags is dead on. I’ll be voting for him AND Lori, lest we get some Trump-cult member in the race.
- low level - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 2:11 pm:
==lest we get some Trump-cult member in the race.==
You mean like how Lori has publically yelled at two members of the socialist caucus - Jeanette Taylor (20th) and Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th)? Calling them liars? That’s real progressive behavior let me tell you.
- TinyDancer(FKASue) - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 3:35 pm:
=If we assume the ones causing the chaos are 16-25ish, we will realize they were not of school age when Vallas ran CPS, so your point fails.=
Right.
Except that the policies he initiated persist to this day:
all focus on the best performing students, who definitely deserve our attention, but not at the exclusion of those who are struggling.
Ignore the unmotivated and the discipline problems at your peril because they’re not going away.

….and that doesn’t change the fact that he thought out was a good idea at the time.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 22 @ 3:47 pm:
=== ….and that doesn’t change the fact===
It actually refutes the idea of the who and the what of want the comment wanted.
