Question of the day
Thursday, Jun 2, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller * Those who misspell “lose” as “loose” grate on my nerves, so I guess I’d better stay out of Wisconsin…
The fact that Texans can’t spell “normal” is hilarious. * The Question: What words do you have the most trouble with?

Definitely

Texuns don’t need no spellun tips from yankees.
- Papa2008 - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:10 pm:
Recieve. Receive. And I know the “I before E except after C”. Correct way just doesn’t look right to me.
- Earnest - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:13 pm:
Remember. It somehow got shortened to “rember” in my head and has carried through from printing to cursive, manual typewriters to electric. It’s so nice to be able to make corrections without an eraser, or putting in a caret, or whiteout or correction tape. Even if we don’t all get to have jetpacks, it’s really nice to be living here in the future.
- Nearly Normal - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:15 pm:
Occurrence has plagued me since the 1964 episode “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” on The Twilight Zone. It was based on a short story by Ambrose Bierce and our sophomore English class read it. Our teacher also required us to watch it on TV so we could discuss it in class.

I always want to put a Y in there.

Go ahead then and stay out of Wisconsin. Your lost, not theirs.
- Jake From Elwood - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:18 pm:
Not a problem for me, but so many in my circles talk about a “mute point” instead of a “moot point”.
It bugs me and it is hard for me to stay mute about it.

I’m dyslexia-adjacent, so I have trouble with words like “dyslexia” and “adjacent”…

Is West Virginia ok?
- twowaystreet - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:23 pm:
==Definitely==
I had an old coworker who always misspelled it as defiantly. It was a fun running joke around the office about them being resistant to everything.
- twowaystreet - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:26 pm:
A new thing for me is always spelling constituents wrong. I keep typing without the second T.
If I see it spelled wrong, I can spot it but for some reason my lizard brain keeps skipping it when I type it.
- Amalia - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:28 pm:
temperament. I’m often leaving. out the a.

== Is West Virginia ok? ==
Absolutely hilarious.
- Torco Sign - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:37 pm:
I always spell “restaurant” correctly, but I usually say to myself, “Oh, this is a word people often get wrong.” Maybe that’s just a me thing
- G'Kar - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:40 pm:
Restaurant–if the blog didn’t have spellcheck, I’d have misspelled it here.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:43 pm:
I won my local grade school spelling bee and advanced to the county competition. I made it to the final round and lost on the word assessor. Believe it or not I was so ashamed to spell A-S-S in front of an audience and on live radio that I spelled it ASESSOR. I lost, of course. I’ve had to spell that word a lot in my adult life and almost every time I do, I think of that day.
- Anon - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:43 pm:
I have never once spelled “accommodation” correctly in the first round.
- Grandson of Man - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:46 pm:
Super-nerdy wordsmith type thing, but perseverance. Once though it was spelled perserverence.
- Excitable Boy - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:47 pm:
Embarrassed. I always start with one R.
Iowans having trouble with cousin explains a lot.
- Anyone Remember - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:47 pm:
Words ending in “el” or “le”
- May soon be required - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:49 pm:
I always spell ‘GRAY’, but isn’t ‘GREY’ also an acceptable spelling?
- Better than plumb - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:50 pm:
People who say “then” when they should be saying “than”. And people who say “in one fell swoop” instead of “at one fell swoop”, which is the way Shakespeare wrote it. One should never try to improve on Shakespeare.
- MSIX - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:50 pm:
I always type “form” when I want “from.” I know the difference, but my fingers just insist on typing the wrong word.
- MisterJayEm - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:50 pm:
Knowing I didn’t have a chance, I would tank every spelling bee, go out in the first round, then sit at my desk and read my book.

- Norseman - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:52 pm:
Juxtaposing “there,” “their,” or “they’re” are my frequent errors when I’m quickly typing a Twitter of Facebook post.
- twowaystreet - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:53 pm:
==I always spell ‘GRAY’, but isn’t ‘GREY’ also an acceptable spelling?==
That’s the American and British versions so both are correct. Same thing as color vs. colour. And there’s a bunch of other similar words in England there is an extra u between o and r.
- Earnest - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:54 pm:
>Believe it or not I was so ashamed to spell A-S-S in front of an audience
Could one of the more clever commenters make some kind of joke about how Rich’s life would be different if they’d asked him to spell “bite me” instead?
- Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:56 pm:
Search warrant has always been problematic. One word, two words, hyphenated?
Indictment is an even bigger problem. Seems like there should be a silent g in there. I mean the g seems to be in everything these days.
and then there’s conviction. Lotta problems. I just avoid at all costs.
- vern - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 3:56 pm:
I trip over lots of words that start with a vowel and cc, but “occasion” is my real enemy. The single s just doesn’t seem right.
- Anon221 - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:09 pm:
Separate… always want to spell it as “seperate”.
- Been There - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:09 pm:
I ditto “Definitely”. Can never get that right. I am pretty much a terrible speller so I could have a long list. But I do try to make sure I write words correctly and I am one of those that actually love google correct except when I am trying to write like I talk.
- wowie - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:11 pm:
similar always gets me. Restaurant and vacuum are others that I always have to triple-check.
- Been There - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:11 pm:
====I won my local grade school spelling be and advanced to the county competition. ====
As I just noted above, I am not the best speller. But I always thought it was “spelling bee”. Google seems to agree but correct me if I am wrong.
- Sir Reel - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:13 pm:
Appears Utah has the best spellers since no one can spell boutonneire, much less know what it means.

What’s up with Idaho? Are that many people actually looking up Tokyo?
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:14 pm:
===But I always thought it was “spelling bee”===
It is. Ironic, no?
- What's in a name? - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:16 pm:
“lable” instead of “Label”; I have a constant battle with auto-correct.
Each time I look at the map I find another word to smile about.

I’m a dyslexia atheist-
I don’t believe in Dogs
- Merle Webb’s Jump Shot - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:23 pm:
My students struggle with attach (attatch) and the already identified separate (seperate). Personally I cannot spell accommodate or recipient without the help of autocorrect.
- DuPage Saint - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:24 pm:
I have always been a poor speller. I think that caused me to have a good vocabulary because I would find an alternate word and it also made m have horrible handwriting. Always ask does spelling count on a test then I figured if teacher couldn’t make out all the letters in a word because my writing so bad maybe she would not see the misspellings
- Streator Curmudgeon - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:25 pm:
Somehow it doesn’t surprise me that Texans can’t spell “normal.” Most of them probably have never heard anyone use it in conversation about that state.
- charles in charge - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:29 pm:
“Sheriff.” Does it have two r’s or two f’s? I can never remember until I type the word out and see whether it looks right or not.
- Joe Bidenopolous - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:30 pm:
Judgment.
Did I spell it right? I’ll never know if there’s another e in there or not
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:30 pm:
I was wishfully thinking that maybe Texans get confused by NORML, the cannabis reform group. Doubtful, but I can still dream.
- Huh? - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:31 pm:
Over all.
When sports radio hosts are talking about when a particular player was drafted they will use words like “… was picked 12th over all …”
The only player picked “over all” was the number 1 draftees. Everyone else were picked afterwards.
Drives me screaming nuts.
- Zoomer - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:33 pm:
“Attorneys General”
- Huh? - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:35 pm:
Moot vs mute.
The first is debatable. The second is speechless.
It is a moot question that Rich Miller will be mute if the Sox will the world series.
- Demoralized - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:37 pm:
Judgment. I always want to include an e.
- Wensicia - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:39 pm:
My problem word is aesthetic.
- Teacher Lady - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:40 pm:
…see whether it looks right or not.
That’s how I spell, too. Sometimes I may not know how to spell a word correctly, but I can look at it and tell you if it’s wrong.
“Thoroughly” and “sleigh” are the words I went out of the spelling bee on in successive years. I neglected to ask for a sentence for sleigh, and spelled ’slay.’
- jackmac - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 4:53 pm:
Mississippi, reported to be one of the most obese states in the country, ironically has trouble spelling exercise.
- Misplaced - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 5:05 pm:
Someone should introduce Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota to the movie Bruce Almighty.
“Guarantee” is a word that I have butchered so badly that even spell check doesn’t know what I have attempted to say…
- JoanP - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 5:13 pm:
= Judgment. I always want to include an e. =
Including an “e” is correct - if you’re British.
- Soccermom - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 5:45 pm:
This blog has ruined me on rein vs reign. I see “free reign” so often that I struggle with which is which.
- Frank talks - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 5:54 pm:
Wednesday doesn’t make sense
Also why is it spelled Favre but pronounced Farve
- Frank talks - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 6:04 pm:
@jackmac looks like you may have trouble with geography
- In_The_Middle - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 6:58 pm:
My word is right at the top of this page. I always get Capitol and Capital mixed up.
- Slugger O’Toole - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 7:25 pm:
Acknowledge always has to be spell corrected for me (even here).
And it bugs me when someone drops the R in surprise.
- Alex - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 7:31 pm:
Pleaded.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 7:48 pm:
Loose lose is a major irritant, almost as bad as c/w/sh/ould “of” instead of “‘ve.”
It would’ve been easier to write that without spell check.
- FormerParatrooper - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 7:51 pm:
During Desert Storm my Father would address letters to me using Dessert Storm.
People I served with there when writing Saudi Arabia would write Saudia Arabia.
- Radio Frequency - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 8:58 pm:
Subpoena–the silent “b”, prairie–the “ir”
I used to have an email address with “prairienet as the domain name. I commonly flubbed it up. This is a long time ago when things didn’t autofill.
- Proud Papa Bear - Thursday, Jun 2, 22 @ 9:14 pm:
Vacuum. I can never remember if it’s one c or one u or two of each.
I used to get tripped up on “license” but now I just think that c comes before s in the alphabet.
- Just Me 2 - Friday, Jun 3, 22 @ 7:41 am:
Rich - clearly you don’t know how to spell “facts.”
- Just Sayin - Friday, Jun 3, 22 @ 8:32 am:
Giannoulias. Sometimes I confuse the spelling of Alexi’s last name with that of the former RI County Dem chair’s last name (Gianulis IIRC).
- Da big bad wolf - Friday, Jun 3, 22 @ 11:37 am:
Effect versus Affect. I have trouble figuring out which word to plug in there.
Also, how does anyone misspell “gray?”
