Just grappling with the fact that “white life” Mary Miller may become my new Congresswoman.

  2. - SouthernCentrist - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:44 am:

    Happy Monday, Rich.

Glad to see the Cubs take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals across the river this weekend. The North Side Nine aren’t any good, and it will get worse when Willson Contreras and Ian Happ get traded next month, but beating the Cards never gets old!

  3. - Peanut Gallery - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:46 am:

The amount of people I talked to this weekend that have no idea there is an election tomorrow.

  4. - Vote Quimby - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:48 am:

I’m glad both my daughters live in Illinois. I didn’t realize how much so…until last week.

  5. - Frank Manzo IV - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:50 am:

I think Tuesday’s primaries and the Ken Griffin news were just on my mind but I had a dream that JB Pritzker and Ken Griffin stopped putting money into political campaigns and instead put millions into “name, image, and likeness” (NIL) money to recruit football players to the University of Illinois. In my dream, I was also back in my college townhouse on Springfield Ave in Urbana.

So it was a weird dream. The Illini (or Northwestern, since that’s where JB went) would have a really good team if that was true. Would also make the campus even more fun, which could attract more students there instead of going out-of-state.

  6. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:51 am:

The “delay” in Trump endorsing Bailey. Does Trump owe money to Griffin?

  7. - Steve Rogers - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:52 am:

    Great day to be outside.

  8. - hisgirlfriday - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:53 am:

Illinois making lots of national news. Mary Miller was going viral all weekend for all the wrong reasons and overshadowed everything else about Trump’s rally in Quincy. Still chuckling at “snollygosters” in the NY Times write up of the gov race. And JB just showed up on “Morning Joe” to talk up the Illinois special session on abortion rights and access.

  9. - CubsFan16 - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:53 am:

    Peanut Gallery-

    Same.

  10. - WestBurbs - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:55 am:

Really struggling with SOS race as back in 2010 I said I’d never vote for AG due to ethical issues — fast forward to today and I’m loathe to pull the lever for AV given her ethical issues, including her initial dissembling response and failure to produce emails.

Who is the lesser of two evils and why?

  11. - Steve - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:55 am:

Federalism is alive and well in America.

  12. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:55 am:

-NY Times write up of the gov race.-

Another terrible piece of parachute journalism. The rural parts of the state are propping up Chicago with their taxes, don’t you know? /s

  13. - Redneck Bill - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:57 am:

Gonna be a rough Tuesday night for leader Durkin as he will no longer be considered a leader by anyone within his caucus.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:57 am:

===Federalism is alive and well in America.===

The rights of people differ from state to state, that’s not too great.

To Illinois, if women travel to Illinois to exercise rights, how is that good for one nation?

  15. - Galway Bay - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:59 am:

Great weather. This is not snark and I am curious how others think about this. I happen to like Rodney a lot. Good guy known him a long long time. Can the Bailey mojo and Trump endorsement pull Mary Miller over the finish line. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:00 am:

===Gonna be a rough Tuesday night for leader Durkin as he will no longer be considered a leader by anyone within his caucus.===

I have yet to hear of a caucus coup planned after Tuesday.

Durkin losing, in November, the likes of Bourne, Demmer, Batinick, that won’t help.

How that vacuum is filled will be interesting, someone Right of even McConchie isn’t helpful for that caucus

  17. - hisgirlfriday - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:02 am:

@RonBurgundy - The author of that piece is a Peoria native.

  18. - Steve - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:02 am:

-The rights of people differ from state to state, that’s not too great.-

Some people struggle with that Roger Sherman fellow.

    https://www.amazon.com/Roger-Sherman-Creation-American-Republic/dp/019992984X

  19. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:07 am:

In Roger Sherman’s time, people were deemed in different categories.

Again not too great. Awful, even.

  20. - Giselle - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:08 am:

Having an activity that was legal for 50 years made illegal overnight by a court decision is absolutely no way to run a nation.

  21. - Pundent - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:10 am:

=I have yet to hear of a caucus coup planned after Tuesday.=

Not seeing it either. But Durkin’s chances of keeping the caucus united in the short term are about to take a major hit. And in the long term, who knows? And it’s not just about Durkin. A whole bunch of reps and other establishment Republicans are about to find themselves on the outside looking in after endorsing Irvin.

  22. - Candy Dogood - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:12 am:

I don’t know about you guys, but I am starting to think that Chris Miller knew exactly what that 3% logo on his truck was all about.

  23. - Zim - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:15 am:

==Still chuckling at “snollygosters” in the NY Times write up of the gov race.==

I had the same reaction when I read it. Ned Flanders immediately came to mind.

  24. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:16 am:

-@RonBurgundy - The author of that piece is a Peoria native.-

Then the author should have known better than to let someone they interviewed spout misinformation, and not only not challenge it, but print it unchallenged.

  25. - Anonymous - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:18 am:

** The rights of people differ from state to state, that’s not too great. **

    Now do gun laws.

  26. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:18 am:

===Federalism is alive and well in America.===

    Not according to Todd …

  27. - Big Dipper - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:19 am:

==Who is the lesser of two evils and why?==

I think her lapses are worse because they are more recent and she was using her public office to enrich her husband and thus indirectly herself.

  28. - Jose Abreu's Next Homer - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:23 am:

Talked with seven of my friends over the weekend. Not one knew about the primary on Tuesday. Think we need more tv ads.

  29. - Amalia - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:26 am:

Congratulations Mary Miller. You made the British tabloids. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10953679/Congresswoman-Mary-Miller-thanks-Trump-historic-victory-WHITE-life-Supreme-Court.html

  30. - Humboldt - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:30 am:

WestBurbs - I went with AV. I believe she’s been good at her jobs, despite the ethical issues. I don’t believe AG has been good at his jobs, despite the ethical issues.
That’s a simplification, but we all have different reasons for voting how we do.

  31. - hisgirlfriday - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:36 am:

@RonBurgundy - Ah gotcha. I agree with your concern about putting the beliefs of voters in print without putting factually incorrect beliefs in context.

  32. - Pot calling kettle - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:38 am:

=== I am starting to think that Chris Miller knew exactly what that 3% logo on his truck was all about.===

Same. Waiting for some news folks to pick up on that as well.

  33. - Annonin' - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:38 am:

For the commenter trying to sort out the SOS race never forget ‘Lexi could never point to a legit bank deal ever, had a very cloudy record as treasurer, invisible as the head of community college and unknown in recent banking career. Plus the mish mash endorsement of Tom Cross AND losing to CommandoKirk. The last 2 should bar him for elected office forever.

  34. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:43 am:

==Who is the lesser of two evils and why?==

David Moore. Because he’s not AG or AV. Sure, he may not win, but I can’t stomach voting for either of the other two in the primary. I’ll hold my nose and vote for the nominee in the General, whoever it is, but I won’t be happy about it.

  35. - WestBurbs - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 10:15 am:

Thanks for the SOS feedback. This is supertough for me as I think the SOS is a hugely important position b/c most Illinoisans have to intereact with the office.

But I lean towards the argument that AV is ethically worse because she abused her office while AG committed his arguable crimes while a private citizen. And, to my knowledge the criticism of AG as Treasurer is not ethical but competence (yes, faint praise)

Crazy that our choice is so horrible from an ethical perspective….

  36. - West Side the Best Side - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 10:44 am:

Mary Miller just misspoke. Just like she did when she was quoting Mr. Hilter from a campaign speech in the North Minehead by-election. (A very obscure Monty Python reference. Sorry, don’t know how to do links.)

  37. - Lakefront - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 10:58 am:

Trump claiming that Bailey is “totally respected” by all in the Illinois Senate around the 20 minute mark gave me a nice laugh over the weekend.

  38. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:17 am:

-Mary Miller just misspoke. Just like she did when she was quoting Mr. Hilter from a campaign speech in the North Minehead by-election. (A very obscure Monty Python reference. Sorry, don’t know how to do links.)-

And the crowd mis-clapped and mis-cheered.

  39. - Just Saying - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:19 am:

==AV is ethically worse because she abused her office while AG committed his arguable crimes while a private citizen. ==

If the definition of “abused your office” also includes mismanging Bright Start, then Alexi also abused his office while Treasurer.

  40. - WestBurbs - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:28 am:

Just Saying — is there any reasonable suspicion that AG’s BrightStart debacle benefited him or anybody connected to him?

I don’t consider incompetence to be “abuse” as I reserve that term for unethical conduct that benefits the officeholder in some way.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:30 am:

    ===BrightStart debacle benefited him===

    It didn’t benefit investors

  42. - Blue Dog - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:32 am:

yesterday drove north to the Red Bud Fireman’s parade. what a show. if the price of gasoline is affecting anyone you sure couldn’t tell by the turnout. thousands. more fossil fuel used up than at a NASCAR race.

  43. - WestBurbs - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:41 am:

OW - totally agree that the BS debacle hurt investors. But is that your cryptic way of suggesting it therefore must have benefitted AG or his buddies? Or is it just incompetence?

  44. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:43 am:

    - WestBurbs -

The investors know they were hurt.

After that, it’s up to them how they see that.

  45. - Lefty Lefty - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 11:46 am:

Just went to Sidney Moore’s website and saw a grammar error and a spelling error in the first paragraph. That helps me enormously.

  46. - WestBurbs - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 12:19 pm:

OW - sorry to push but do you have an opinion on whether AG directly or indirectly benefited from the BrightStart debacle?

I’m deciding this one on ethics, which is the thinnest of lines between AG and AV so the answer is important to me.

  47. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 12:24 pm:

Isn’t an ethical obligation to run a program where the foundation of the program is to be a steward of people’s invested money?

Ethically speaking if someone did investments for me explained incompetence is ok if they don’t benefit from it, but isn’t the benefit the idea that the investing person keeps their credibility?

Trying to think of a financial planner that sees incompetence as not an ethical issue.

Hope that helps. Be well. No matter where you fall, do NOT forget to vote.

  48. - Pundent - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 12:28 pm:

Our primary day will also now bring a surprise select committee hearing. Tomorrow could have multiple surprises in store.

  49. - Proud Papa Bear - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 12:51 pm:

Had a great time at yesterday’s Pride parade. As it was the first one since 2019 and in the wake of the SC decision, it was very intense.

  50. - Just Saying - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 12:57 pm:

I’m surprised before everything unraveled for her, that an AV supporter did not try to seek out some families whose kids lost the chance at attending college because of Alexi’s Bright Start mismanagement.

Or even making a stretch and saying that “Alexi Giannoulias has contributed to skyrocketing college tuition and the student loan crisis.”

  51. - Just Saying - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 12:58 pm:

==Just went to Sidney Moore’s website and saw a grammar error and a spelling error in the first paragraph. That helps me enormously.==

David Moore (no relation to Sidney that I am aware of) is also running for SOS.

  52. - Just Saying - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 1:00 pm:

Hopefully after tomorrow we can complete this analogy: “David Moore is to 2022 what Carol Moseley-Braun was to 1992.”

  53. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 1:01 pm:

A very strong case can be made that the Valencia campaign has been the worst run statewide campaign of any real contenders.

She had the endorsements, an opponent with baggage, an opponent who was absent for a decade, and the logistical means to build support.

Losing sight of messaging that shoulda been used is like 37th of all the really lousy campaign mistakes/issues Valencia had.

They ran that campaign like a Ward Committeeman race for cripes sake.

  54. - Friendly Bob Adams - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 1:21 pm:

One last chance to say that I am still completely confused as to why anyone would support Alexi Giannoulias for any job anywhere ever.

  55. - JoanP - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 1:28 pm:

= Just went to Sidney Moore’s website and saw a grammar error and a spelling error in the first paragraph. That helps me enormously. =

    And they don’t stop there.

I was researching the MWRD candidates and ran into the same thing on one website. It was full of bad grammar, sentence fragments, “priority’s” rather than “priorities”, “effected” when “affected” was meant, etc.

If you can’t make sure your campaign website is properly done, why should I trust you properly to run the office if elected?

  56. - WestBurbs - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 1:31 pm:

    Thanks OW. I always vote.

=A very strong case can be made that the Valencia campaign has been the worst run statewide campaign of any real contenders.=

It also proves that bad candidates and bad campaigns often go hand in hand. The campaign may simply be an extension of who Valencia is.

  60. - RNUG - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 3:23 pm:

Finally got around to early voting just now since I’m working as n election judge tomorrow. Sangamon County Court House was literally walk in, vote, walkout. Took longer to find a parking space.

  61. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 4:24 pm:

===The campaign may simply be an extension of who Valencia is===

Welp, neither side of that helped the other to be “better”, that’s true.

  62. - Just Saying - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 4:52 pm:

After this campaign I am all in favor of a tax on candidates and campaigns on the money they spend on mail and printing. With proceeds to go to state environmental causes. I do not think it will get 60-30-1 or even out of Rules, however.

Also I am in favor of extending the Do Not Call list to include political campaigns and nonprofits. even though the Do Not Call list is a joke in theory as the spam robocall “companies” have found ways around it through phantom phone calls.

  63. - Just Saying - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 5:07 pm:

Channel 20 goofs yet again. This time listing Mary Miller’s hometown as “Danville.”

Memo to Sinclair: Mary Miller is from Oakland and Danville is in the new CD2.

Then again, Channel 20 acts more like a Danville and Champaign station rather than Springfield.

  64. - Fivegreenleaves - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 9:54 pm:

Trying to decide if I’m going to vote in the primary tomorrow. I’m not happy with either party right now.
