Just grappling with the fact that “white life” Mary Miller may become my new Congresswoman.
- SouthernCentrist - Monday, Jun 27, 22 @ 8:44 am:
Happy Monday, Rich.
Glad to see the Cubs take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals across the river this weekend. The North Side Nine aren’t any good, and it will get worse when Willson Contreras and Ian Happ get traded next month, but beating the Cards never gets old!
I think Tuesday’s primaries and the Ken Griffin news were just on my mind but I had a dream that JB Pritzker and Ken Griffin stopped putting money into political campaigns and instead put millions into “name, image, and likeness” (NIL) money to recruit football players to the University of Illinois. In my dream, I was also back in my college townhouse on Springfield Ave in Urbana.
So it was a weird dream. The Illini (or Northwestern, since that’s where JB went) would have a really good team if that was true. Would also make the campus even more fun, which could attract more students there instead of going out-of-state.
Illinois making lots of national news. Mary Miller was going viral all weekend for all the wrong reasons and overshadowed everything else about Trump’s rally in Quincy. Still chuckling at “snollygosters” in the NY Times write up of the gov race. And JB just showed up on “Morning Joe” to talk up the Illinois special session on abortion rights and access.
Really struggling with SOS race as back in 2010 I said I’d never vote for AG due to ethical issues — fast forward to today and I’m loathe to pull the lever for AV given her ethical issues, including her initial dissembling response and failure to produce emails.
Great weather. This is not snark and I am curious how others think about this. I happen to like Rodney a lot. Good guy known him a long long time. Can the Bailey mojo and Trump endorsement pull Mary Miller over the finish line. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen.
=I have yet to hear of a caucus coup planned after Tuesday.=
Not seeing it either. But Durkin’s chances of keeping the caucus united in the short term are about to take a major hit. And in the long term, who knows? And it’s not just about Durkin. A whole bunch of reps and other establishment Republicans are about to find themselves on the outside looking in after endorsing Irvin.
-@RonBurgundy - The author of that piece is a Peoria native.-
Then the author should have known better than to let someone they interviewed spout misinformation, and not only not challenge it, but print it unchallenged.
WestBurbs - I went with AV. I believe she’s been good at her jobs, despite the ethical issues. I don’t believe AG has been good at his jobs, despite the ethical issues.
That’s a simplification, but we all have different reasons for voting how we do.
@RonBurgundy - Ah gotcha. I agree with your concern about putting the beliefs of voters in print without putting factually incorrect beliefs in context.

For the commenter trying to sort out the SOS race never forget ‘Lexi could never point to a legit bank deal ever, had a very cloudy record as treasurer, invisible as the head of community college and unknown in recent banking career. Plus the mish mash endorsement of Tom Cross AND losing to CommandoKirk. The last 2 should bar him for elected office forever.

David Moore. Because he’s not AG or AV. Sure, he may not win, but I can’t stomach voting for either of the other two in the primary. I’ll hold my nose and vote for the nominee in the General, whoever it is, but I won’t be happy about it.
Thanks for the SOS feedback. This is supertough for me as I think the SOS is a hugely important position b/c most Illinoisans have to intereact with the office.
But I lean towards the argument that AV is ethically worse because she abused her office while AG committed his arguable crimes while a private citizen. And, to my knowledge the criticism of AG as Treasurer is not ethical but competence (yes, faint praise)
Crazy that our choice is so horrible from an ethical perspective….

yesterday drove north to the Red Bud Fireman’s parade. what a show. if the price of gasoline is affecting anyone you sure couldn’t tell by the turnout. thousands. more fossil fuel used up than at a NASCAR race.
OW - totally agree that the BS debacle hurt investors. But is that your cryptic way of suggesting it therefore must have benefitted AG or his buddies? Or is it just incompetence?
Isn’t an ethical obligation to run a program where the foundation of the program is to be a steward of people’s invested money?
Ethically speaking if someone did investments for me explained incompetence is ok if they don’t benefit from it, but isn’t the benefit the idea that the investing person keeps their credibility?
Trying to think of a financial planner that sees incompetence as not an ethical issue.
Hope that helps. Be well. No matter where you fall, do NOT forget to vote.
I’m surprised before everything unraveled for her, that an AV supporter did not try to seek out some families whose kids lost the chance at attending college because of Alexi’s Bright Start mismanagement.
Or even making a stretch and saying that “Alexi Giannoulias has contributed to skyrocketing college tuition and the student loan crisis.”

Finally got around to early voting just now since I’m working as n election judge tomorrow. Sangamon County Court House was literally walk in, vote, walkout. Took longer to find a parking space.
After this campaign I am all in favor of a tax on candidates and campaigns on the money they spend on mail and printing. With proceeds to go to state environmental causes. I do not think it will get 60-30-1 or even out of Rules, however.
Also I am in favor of extending the Do Not Call list to include political campaigns and nonprofits. even though the Do Not Call list is a joke in theory as the spam robocall “companies” have found ways around it through phantom phone calls.

A very strong case can be made that the Valencia campaign has been the worst run statewide campaign of any real contenders.
She had the endorsements, an opponent with baggage, an opponent who was absent for a decade, and the logistical means to build support.
