Fun with numbers

* Illinois Policy Institute

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is boasting about what his Illinois Family Relief Plan means, but a little math shows it means $35.52 a month in savings for the average family at the same time inflation is eating $90 from their budget.

So, now they’re saying it’s an annual savings of $426.24 for an average family, but they said it was $556 per household a few months ago.

Whatever the case, I personally think scoffing at annual savings of even $426.24 for the average Illinois family might not go over so well. The state can’t be a total backstop.

“Under JB Pritzker, the state is doing what it can under its direct control to help battle against detrimental economic forces not under its control. It’s not enough, so instead, the state should do nothing.”

    A little math, indeed.

The IPI folks can donate their savings to the Treasury if they think it’s so insignificant.

When gas taxes go up a few cents, they sky is falling and there will be a constant drumbeat of stories from IPI of how people near the border will go out of their way and drive extra distance to buy gas to save a few cents in taxes(often negating any savings by driving the extra distance.)

When the state cuts taxes, saving hundreds of dollars a year, it’s no big deal and can just be ignored or written off as meaningless.

They really aren’t any better at this than they were running government.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 12:52 pm:

What number would IPI feel is one that they see as significant?

These are the same folks that, when given the opportunity to use the levers of government they were so good… they lasted weeks, some didn’t even last long enough for their “direct deposit” of checks to take effect.

IPI wholly lacks the understanding and operational wherewithal to questioning governing, their own failures show this to be accurate.

So, what number *is* significant… without it being a handout or worse?

  7. - NotRich - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 12:52 pm:

Webster’s dictionary.. “irrelevant” they have a picture of the IPI LOGO

  8. - SaulGoodman - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 1:07 pm:

To be fair… $426 is not that much to the millionaire/billionaire donor class that IPI serves.

  9. - Baloneymous - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 1:07 pm:

Until IPI stops constantly bashing of our state and praising our neighbors, I can’t take anything they put out as serious or legitimate. Every time I drive by their office on 2nd and Lawrence, I throw up in my mouth a little bit.

Every time I drive by the office, I laugh at their ignorance, then cry that so many people believe that ignorance.

For some people, maybe many people, $400 isn’t much. But if you were scrapping by financially and suddenly really needed to buy 2 tires for your car, then having an extra $400 is a huge deal (versus taking out a payday loan). Putting stuff a little more in context and framing it, could help the JB team a bit.

  12. - Homebody - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 1:36 pm:

Has IPI every said “Here is a good idea we have, and here is how it will help”?

Seems like they exist only to complain. Even ignoring whether they are acting in good faith, at some point what is the point of a think tank that never actually tries to improve anything?

  13. - A-Man - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 1:36 pm:

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Were the state not doing anything, it would be how awful of a job JB is doing helping the working class. Were the state doing more, it would be how awful our state is spending wise.

    Dear IPI,

Bernie Sanders called, he wants his schtick back.

  15. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 2:38 pm:

According to the United States Joint Economic Committee the inflation rate in Illinois is 14% and costs the average family an extra $808 a month or $9,692 a year

Wait until the inflation reduction act kicks in with more government spending that was part of the reason for the elevated inflation we are experiencing now

===According to the United States Joint Economic Committee the inflation rate in Illinois is 14% and costs the average family an extra $808 a month or $9,692 a year===

    And… you’re still here.

    Which is your “ideal” state?

This post is about the savings, what savings is acceptable for *you*, and the incredibly phony and embarrassing IPI can’t really govern or grasp governing and seem to think any savings is “meh”.

  17. - Proud Sucker - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 5:04 pm:

“According to the United States Joint Economic Committee…”

Neat interactive map. Anyone know why Texas is at 14.9%? Summer electricity costs? Their retail fuel is way lower than ours.

Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin are also at 14.5% like us so there must be some strong regionalization in their methodology.

    Interesting website.

  18. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Aug 9, 22 @ 11:44 pm:

Guess those Republican governors are bad for the economy too LP.
