Secretary of State race roundup
Tuesday, Aug 16, 2022 - Posted by Isabel Miller
* NBC Chicago…
[Rep. Dan Brady], a state representative from Bloomington, has run on a platform emphasizing technological upgrades within the Secretary of State’s Office, and says he will address other areas where financial savings and improved services can go hand-in-hand.
“We have to look at somewhere around $10.5 million that we spend on leasing 96 driver’s services facilities,” he said. “How can we improve upon that?”
Giannoulias has also promised to use his power as secretary of state to find ways to leverage technology to help citizens throughout the state.
“(Voters ask) ‘how can you make sure government works better, easier and quicker for me?’” he said. […]
When asked if he supported Bailey, [Brady] didn’t answer directly.
“Well, Darren Bailey is running for governor on the Republican ticket, and I’m a Republican,” he said.
* Politico…
Democrats, who recently held a contentious inter[sic]-party battle for the new party chair, showed a unified front for the Bud Billiken Parade, known as the largest African-American parade in the United States. […]
The message: Democrats are moving past the divisiveness and coming together for November.
We also caught Alexi Giannoulias, the Democratic secretary of state candidate, greeting Pritzker and his team with hugs on the parade route. Pritzker had endorsed Giannoulias’ primary opponent, Anna Valencia.
Message received: Democrats are united.
* Dan Brady’s thoughts on the new license plate stickers via the Daily Herald…
Brady said he understands that the scaled-back sticker was a temporary solution but reinforced “the original way with the month and year is the best for consumers and for law enforcement. Overall, it’s the most efficient way to proceed with renewal stickers.”

When you talk like you’re in a cult…
Even… even if Brady is comfortable with the Reagan Rule measure, and let’s say that’s in play… Brady agrees with Bailey, 80% of Bailey, on abortion, She-Caw-Go, the insurrection, and all things Trump?
Maybe Brady is afraid that the cult will turn on him and abandon his campaign and have a catastrophic Rauner-like loss… or maybe Brady feels that’s inevitable so “try to keep it close”?
I remember, and it’s been brought up often, the QOTD and the “most important issue this election”… Brady is in the box, how much real distance can Brady find with Bailey, while being able to count on Bailey cultists?
Or, that’s all lip service, by me, and Brady can’t stand Bailey, but “what can I say, I’m stuck with him”.
Either way, Alexi won his race, Valencia, arguably ran the WORST race in the primary, and that’s saying something with Irvin, but I’d offer up Valencia had every opportunity to win, but blew the White and Pritzker endorsementS, got defined by Alexi, wholly outmaneuvered by Alexi, and never did I feel Valencia had anything resembling a statewide campaign or candidacy… so… Alexi is rewarded with Bailey… I mean, Brady.

Brady is a better candidate than Giannoulias but too many true republicans are making an anti-Trump statement.
- Pundent - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 8:54 am:
Brady and Demmer are in an untenable position. If they don’t fully support Bailey they’ll fail the litmus test of what it means to be a Republican today. At the same time, they know that being tied to the base will be a boat anchor on their campaigns. For Durkin and the establishment Republicans having Irvin as the nominee was as much about trying to rebuild the party and win a few down ballot offices. That task is a lot harder with Bailey leading the ticket.
- Arsenal - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 8:58 am:
If it ever got litigated to the electorate, I think closing SOS offices would prove to be unpopular. But I doubt this race is ever getting to the point where we’re debating the candidates’ actual positions.
- Regular democrat - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 9:01 am:
Alexi better not take Brady lightly. He sharp and normal for lack of a better way to put it.
- Early Wynn - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 9:09 am:
Brady is better but can’t win , it’s Illinois, put a fork in any statewide Gop candidate for a long time ti come if ever
- Dwight - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 9:22 am:
I will be voting for Brady for SOS. The only Republican I will voting for statewide. Why? It is clear Brady loves and has an appreciation for constituent services and we need some independence from a state completely dominated by one party. Alexei seems to be using this position as a stepping stone. I am open to changing my mind but I understand Brady’s tough position- Can’t support Bailey but can’t be public about it. To my fellow Democrats I say this: do we really care about having people interested in improving our lives or are we just going to fall for another politician who will use the seat to run for a different position.

The first candidate that commits to upgrading the Corporation/LLC Search on the SOS site gets my vote.
- SAP - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 9:52 am:
How do they feel about eliminating the Franchise Tax? It’s not like anybody, inside or outside of SOS, understands how it works.

See, that’s the whole thing for me. Party over principle disqualifies you in my mind, and especially when your party is currently bonkers. This is the General, Dan.

I really dislike Alexi and would vote Brady in a second — if he disavowed Bailey and Trump.
- Franklin - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 10:32 am:
And how about electronic lien and title. The GA gave the SoS authority to implement it two decades ago and then passed a law saying they had to implement it by 2022 but no action has been taken. How about instead of wasting weeks mailing titles back and forth the SoS look into this new fangled internet thing. It’s probably not a fad.

What is Rich Whitney up to these days? Is it too late for him to launch a Green SOS candidacy?

===Is it too late===
Yes.
- JS Mill - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 11:05 am:
Brady is a genuinely good person. I have interacted with him on a number of occasions and really like him as a person. But, this…
= Darren Bailey is running for governor on the Republican ticket, and I’m a Republican, =
And his vote with Rauner on school funding back in the dark days are hard to square with the guy I have dealt with.
The SOS is an undervote for me, I just cannot vote for a person like Giannoulias. I want to vote for Brady, but I don’t think I can do that either for the reasons above.

Unfortunately, the other Jesse White (the Centralia Libertarian) sounds like he was thrown off the ballot.
Interestingly, Candance Wanzo (who got fired by SOS for theft and got prison time) is also from Centralia. Any connection between the “other Jesse” and Wanzo other than both being from Centralia? Seems ironic to me.

In what… realm of honesty of integrity… is that happening… an unfortunate one? There’s zero unfortunate about it, in any way.

Bailey and Trussell can’t say they lost because they ran as people they aren’t. Now they’re out here finding out what people outside that ideological subculture make of it.

Realm of integrity in the party Speaker Madigan’s lead for decades?
Joe Barboza and Grasiela Rodriguez must have had prior commitments and won’t be able to run for Secretary of State this year

===Speaker Madigan===
For a guy who wants everyone to move on from things, goodness you bring up Madigan more than … lol
What a sad way to go about your business.
So ya think “Jesse White” shoulda been on the ballot? Was the criteria met?
- JR - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 12:28 pm:
The reason why Libertarian candidate Jesse White from Centralia was kicked off the ballot was because he had fake signatures. That is fraud. Punishable. You may verify this with the Illinois Board of Elections.
- Lurker - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 1:36 pm:
OW, we can have a contest. In the past year have you mentioned Rauner more or has LP mentioned Madigan more? You lose in quantity, he loses in percentage.
Sorry but your stone and glass houses thing needed a comment imho.
- Primate - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 1:41 pm:
Brady and Demmer have potential; however, I will only vote for Brady. He understands the office’s role. The Demmer campaign is Rauner reboot III. Chatter is already starting.

Friend, I think you missed the whole point with this need to insert yourself.
Part of - Lucky Pierre - schtick is that folks need to move on. It’s part and parcel of his “thing”
This idea he then, “himself”, doesn’t, that’s the thing.
If you feel the need to count, catalog, graph anything, please, have at it, make sure it’s all annotated too, if it helps.
Good luck with all that.
Be well.
- Lurker - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 2:08 pm:
I agree on your point. Although the graph idea is interesting. 😉
I just wish Rauner’s name no longer came up. His inabilities were so frustrating and how he purposely hurt Illinois is still frustrating as he began the ruining of the Illinois GOP. of course, now the whole GOP is ruined.
Anyway, back to the OP.
- Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 2:17 pm:
Love OW calling out someone for “inserting themselves” in someone else’s posts.
Absolutely zero self awareness

We all comment, we don’t post. We comment.
Are you voting for Brady and Bailey?
Cult-like blind obedience to a party is kinda odd, given what is being learned, seemingly daily, about Bailey.
If Brady, like Demmer, is supporting Bailey, that’s good to know before November, actually. It helps.

Rauner had help from folks like Dan Brady. Now it appears Brady is ready to be there for Bailey.

I had never heard of the Franchise tax until now.
I wonder how they feel about a couple license plate items.
1. Make giant truck-cranes buy weight-based truck license plates like every other truck in Illinois. Currently, they tear up our roads and don’t even pay one cent to the state.
2. Abolish the license plate requirement for the smallest (under 3000 pounds) trailers, often used for small boats.
- Yooper in Diaspora - Tuesday, Aug 16, 22 @ 10:24 pm:
I only know Brady through higher ed conversations, and he struck me as one not taking ownership of the defunding of higher ed–just looking for ways to make it all less expensive now. Seemed tone deaf, if affable. And he doesn’t strike me as less ambitious than Giannoulias. Above all, it seems so hard for long-term Republican politicans to shake the group think, even if part of them would like to.
- wheelman - Wednesday, Aug 17, 22 @ 10:16 am:
I’m not an ‘in the know’ Springfield insider , but i do know this : Dan Brady’s heart and soul are into this race and nobody cares more about real people and their problems than Dan Brady. SoS is a public service job that he was MADE for. No one will out work Dan Brady regardless of political affiliation. If you want a real Secretary of State vote for Brady - if you want a a placeholder on his way to another higher office , vote for Alexi. If one has the ability to speak candidly with their state rep or senator, D or R , they will tell you the same.
